iPad mini hurting iPad 4’s sales: Analyst

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 30 November 2012 | 21.43

NEW DELHI: Apple iPad mini, the recently-launched smaller version of the company tablet, seems to have become a runaway hit, but at the expense of its bigger counterpart. There are indications it may be cannibalising the sales of the fourth generation iPad.
Citi analyst Glen Yeung conducted a survey of 50 Apple stores recently and found that iPad mini has been flying off the shelf, whereas the fourth-generation iPad is cooling its heels at the retail outlets, according to a report by tech website CNET.

Though 80% of the stores participating in the poll revealed that at least one variant of iPad mini was in stock, 96% said overall inventory depended on pricing, storage capacity and colours. Buyers seem to be least interested in the 32GB iteration of the device, according to Yeung's survey.

In contrast, the fourth-generation iPad was available in 100% of the stores and only 6% said stocks were below par.
As per Yeung's estimates, 10 million units of iPad mini went into production for this quarter, as compared to 10-15 million units of iPad 2 and fourth-generation iPad combined. He took note of a report in Economic Daily, which said Apple has asked display panel maker AU Optronics to halt the shipments owing to high defect rates.

Rumours say AU Optronics is going through problems in producing the display for iPad mini, which is more difficult to make than full-sized iPad's panel. Yeung predicts that the company will take care of these issues by the end of this year and production of iPad mini will rise.

SmartTV sales to touch 54 million in 2012: Informa

NEW DELHI: Over 220 million SmartTV sets will be sold worldwide in 2017, up from the 54 million that will be sold in 2012, according to Informa Telecoms & Media's latest forecasts. 31% of households worldwide will own at least one Smart TV in five years time, according to Informa, with 63% and 64% household penetration in North America and Western Europe.

However, while Smart TV connection rates are rising, they will continue to lag the connection rates of games consoles and media streaming devices (such as Apple TV and Roku), says the research house.

With their long lifecycles, TVs are simply not the right device to be the hub of the digital home. Instead gadgets that are regularly replaced, including smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes, media streamers and games consoles, will be the key devices in the digital home experience. Smartphones in particular, with their short lifecycles and rapidly increasing processor power, will continue to define what 'smart' means.

"Informa estimates that in 2017 more than half of the 800 million SmartTV sets will only be used as dumb screens," comments Andrew Ladbrook, Senior Analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media.

Manufacturers' short term support for their SmartTVs will also hinder the device. New services continue to only be launched solely on the latest Smart TV models - HBO Go, Skype, Onlive, BBC's Sport app - which means that users who bought last year's device are excluded.

The fragmentation of platforms and standards continues to plague the SmartTV market. Apps cannot be easily released across multiple devices, since each Smart TV platform demands bespoke development. This situation benefits the current market leaders Samsung and LG, who can attract top services first due to their strong positions. And while Informa believes that Google TV or Android will come to be the default SmartTV OS, it is still some years away.

"If TVs are going to be truly smart they must do more than offer a wide variety of online video services," Ladbrook argues. "Instead they must add advanced functionality including voice control, motion control, advanced advertising, attractive user interfaces and two-way communications with other smart devices - so-called 'second screens' - allowing these devices both to send video to the TV and know what is being watched. Manufacturers should focus less on adding more content and more on improving how users can interact with that content."

Samsung ordered to pay $5.5m to ex-employee

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 November 2012 | 21.43

SEOUL: A South Korean court has ordered Samsung Electronics to pay millions of dollars to a former employee who developed key technologies for the firm's lucrative TV business, an official said on Thursday.
The ex-worker surnamed Chung had filed a suit against Samsung accusing it of scrimping on bonus payments after he had developed some 20 technologies -- later patented -- for the firm's TV business from 1991 to 1995.

Seoul Central District Court ordered Samsung to pay him about 6.0 billion won ($5.5 million), noting that the technologies in question had earned the electronics giant profits estimated at 60 billion won, a court spokesman told AFP.

"It is reasonable to pay the creator of the technologies money worth 10 percent of the profits given Chung's role," the court ruled.

It was not immediately clear whether Samsung would appeal.

The world's top maker of flat-screen TVs and smartphones is embroiled in a string of legal rows, including a bitter patent battle with rival Apple.

Google allows 10GB attachments in Gmail

NEW DELHI: Do you feel the 25MB limit for attachments in Gmail is not enough? Well Google seems to have heard your prayers. The search giant has integrated Google Drive-based attachments in its email service so that users can now send files up to 10GB in size. Google Drive is the company's cloud storage service, similar to Microsoft SkyDrive and DropBox.

On the official Gmail blog, Phil Sharp, Gmail product manager, posted: "you can insert files from Drive directly into an email without leaving your Gmail." He added, "...with Drive, you can insert files up to 10GB -- 400 times larger than what you can send as a traditional attachment. Also, because you're sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version."

In case all the recipients of the mail do not have access to the file in Google Drive, Gmail will prompt the user so the requisite settings can be altered from the open message box itself. Moreover, users also have the option of simply pasting the links of Google Drive files they want to share with the mail recipients in the compose box.

As of now, Google has only integrated Google Drive-based attachment feature in the new compose box. Therefore, users who had opted out of the new look of compose box need to opt for it once again in order to mail Google Drive-based files. Those who want to mail files bigger than 25MB in size need to transfer them to Google Drive in order to send them via Gmail.

Google's 'propaganda' slammed by German politicians

BERLIN: Senior German politicians have denounced as propaganda a campaign by Google to mobilise public opinion against proposed legislation to let publishers charge search engines for displaying newspaper articles.

Internet lobbyists say they are worried the German law will set a precedent for other countries such as France and Italy that have shown an interest in having Google pay publishers for the right to show their news snippets in its search results.

Lawmakers in Berlin will debate the bill in the Bundestag (lower house) on Thursday. Google says the law would make it harder for users to retrieve information via the internet.

Google launched its campaign against the bill on Tuesday with advertisements in German newspapers and a web information site called "Defend your web".

"Such a law would hit every internet user in Germany," Stefan Tweraser, country manager for Google Germany, said in a statement. "An ancillary copyright means less information for consumers and higher costs for companies."

The campaign has caused outrage among some members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition.

"The campaign initiated by Google is cheap propaganda," said conservative lawmakers Guenter Krings and Ansgar Heveling.

"Under the guise of a supposed project for the freedom of the internet, an attempt is being made to coopt its users for its own lobbying," the two said in a statement.

Supporters of the law argue that newspaper publishers should be able to benefit from advertising revenues earned by search engines using their content.

Under the plans, publishers would get a bigger say over how their articles are used on the Internet and could charge search engines for showing articles or extracts.

German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a member of the Free Democrats (FDP) who share power in Merkel's government, said she was astonished that Google was trying to monopolise opinion-making. She is responsible for the law.

'Panic mongering'

Germany's newspaper industry, suffering from economic slowdown and keen to get its hands on any revenues it can, backs the plans and railed against Google's campaign.

"The panic mongering from Google has no justification," Germany's BDZV newspaper association said in a statement.

"The argument from search engine companies that internet searching and retrieval will be made more difficult is not serious. Private use, reading, following links and quoting will be possible, just as before."

Internet lobbyists in Brussels fear the European Commission is sympathetic to publisher demands for a piece of Google's profits online. Recent statements, they say, are proof.

"Consumers are not the only ones facing difficulties," Michel Barnier, the EU's internal market commissioner, said in a speech on November 7. "Think of newspaper publishers who see the content they produce being used by others to attract consumers on the net and generate advertising revenues."

French newspapers and magazines want Google to pay them for linking to their articles on Google. The French government has named a mediator to negotiate with the press and Google to try to get a deal by the end of the year.

If no deal emerges, President Francois Hollande's government will ask parliament to draft a law modifying copyright laws to protect the press from appropriation of its content online, according to a letter signed by two ministers on November 28.

Cellphone addiction is similar to compulsive buying: Study

WASHINGTON: Cellphone addiction is similar to compulsive buying and credit card misuse, a new study has found.

Cellphone and instant messaging addictions are driven by materialism and impulsiveness and can be compared to consumption pathologies like compulsive buying and credit card misuse, according to Baylor University researchers.

"Cellphones are a part of our consumer culture. They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They're also eroding our personal relationships," said researcher James Roberts.

Roberts' study, co-authored with Stephen Pirog III, from Seton Hall University, found that materialism and impulsiveness drive cell phone addiction.

Cellphones are used as part of the conspicuous consumption ritual and also act as a pacifier for the impulsive tendencies of the user, according to Roberts.

Impulsiveness, he noted, plays an important role in both behavioural and substance addictions.

This study is the first to investigate the role materialism plays in cell phone addiction. According to Roberts, "materialism is an important consumer value that impacts many of the decisions we make as consumers".

Additionally, cellphone use and over-use have become so common that it is important to have a better understanding of what drives these types of technological addictions.

Previous studies have shown that young adults send an average of 109.5 text messages a day or approximately 3,200 texts each month.

They receive an additional 113 text messages and check their cell 60 times in a typical day and on average, college students spend approximately seven hours daily interacting with information and communication technology.

"At first glance, one might have the tendency to dismiss such aberrant cellphone use as merely youthful nonsense - a passing fad. But an emerging body of literature has given increasing credence to cellphone addiction and similar behavioural addictions," Roberts said.

Data for this study come from self-report surveys of 191 business students at two US universities. Cellphones are used by approximately ninety per cent of college students, and said Roberts, "serve more than just a utilitarian purpose."

The study was published in the Journal of Behavioural Addictions.

Google's fears of internet control allayed by ITU

NEW DELHI: Members of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency for information and communication technologies, have resolved to refrain from taking any unilateral or discriminatory action that could impede another member state from accessing public internet sites and resources.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA-12) in Dubai on Thursday where ITU members revised and adopted a resolution first agreed at the 2008 WTSA - resolution 69, guaranteeing non-discriminatory access and use of internet resources.

Various proposals will be put forward during the 11-day meet of ITU, but most concerns have been associated with internet censorship. The US government and companies like Google have been vocal about their wish to keep the internet out of the reach of the UN and national governments.

Google has been among the most vocal critics of the plan to bring the internet under the control of ITU. It has previously said "ITU is the wrong place to make decisions about the future of the internet" and "only governments have a voice at the ITU." It also said among the member nations, some "do not support a free and open internet."

The company was also concerned internet regulation by ITU "could increase censorship and threaten innovation" and "would require services like YouTube, Facebook, and Skype to pay new tolls in order to reach people across borders"

US government has stressed that the multi-stakeholder and open model of internet, where the governments have no say, is ideal. The country finds resonance among internet activists, who are concerned that proposals from countries like China, Russia etc may end the open model of the internet and threaten free speech.

Resolution 69 invites affected ITU member states to report to ITU, director of the Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau (TSB) on any unilateral and/or discriminatory actions that could impede another member state from accessing public internet sites and using resources, said ITU in a statement.

Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general, ITU, said, "Just days away from the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12), the adoption of this resolution underlines ITU's commitment to a free and inclusive information society. This should send a strong message to the international community about accusations that ITU's membership wishes to restrict the freedom of speech. Clearly the opposite is true."

Nokia wins wireless patent ruling against RIM

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 28 November 2012 | 21.43

HELSINKI: Nokia has won its dispute with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) over use of its patents related to wireless local access network (WLAN) technology, the Finnish company said.

Announcing that an arbitrator had ruled in its favor, Nokia said: "It found that RIM was in breach of contract and is not entitled to manufacture or sell WLAN products without first agreeing royalties."

Nokia, which is trying to boost its royalty income as its phone business tumbles, said that it had filed cases in the United States, Britain and Canada to enforce the arbitrator's ruling.

"This could have a significant financial impact, as all BlackBerry devices support WLAN, although the volumes are currently very low in these countries," IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo said.

RIM was not immediately available to comment.

Nokia said it signed a cross-license agreement with RIM covering standards-essential cellular patents in 2003; a deal that was amended in 2008. RIM sought arbitration in 2011, arguing that the license should be extended to cover WLAN patents.

Nokia, along with Ericsson and Qualcomm, is among the leading patent holders in the wireless industry. Patent royalties generate annual revenue of about 500 million euros ($646 million) for Nokia.

Based on a Nortel patent sale and Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility, some investors and analysts say that Nokia's patent portfolio alone merits its current share price of 2.50 euros.

However, the patent market has cooled since those deals were made and industry experts say that fair value of patents in large portfolios is $100,000 to $200,000, pricing Nokia's portfolio at up to 0.50 euros per share.

Vodafone launches security solution for enterprises

NEW DELHI: Vodafone India launched a solution, Secure Device Manager, for its corporate clients which will allow enterprises secure company data on mobile handsets and tablet PCs of their employees.

Vodafone India is the first Indian telecom operator to launch such a service. Its UK parent offers the solution in the UK and Germany and has 18,000 active users.

"With the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) concept picking up pace, increasing number of people prefer smartphones and tablets to access the company's data. Securing these devices, and the data has now become critical," Vodafone India Director (Business Services) Naveen Chopra told reporters on a video conference.

BYOD is a policy now being followed globally by corporates, where employees are allowed to bring personally owned mobile devices to work place and using it to access company resources like email, file servers and databases as well as their personal applications and data.

Vodafone Secure Device Manager provides IT managers a management console which allows them to remotely manage security policies, device settings, certificates, applications, operating system etc, he added.

Clients would be charged at Rs 175 per device per month and they can scale depending on the requirement.

It allows users to remotely lock or wipe all information from their smart devices in case the device is lost.

Asked how the company would compete with IT services firms which typically provide such solutions, Chopra said Vodafone's reach and capability would help the company service their clients better.

Business Services, which constitutes about 10 per cent of Vodafone's revenues in the country, over voice and data services over wireless and fixedline networks. It has over 3.6 million corporate customers in India.

According to industry estimates, companies spend 2-5 per cent of their IT budgets on security of devices.

While earlier IT security was limited to desktops and laptops, increasing popularity of mobile workforce and usage of smartphones and tablet PCs is forcing IT administrators to seriously consider securing corporate information and applications used on such mobile devices.

Also, the increasing trend of BYOD is also fuelling demand for securing these devices to protect sensitive corporate data.

6 tips to keep your emails secret

If David Petraeus couldn't keep his affair from prying eyes as CIA director, then what chance does an average person have? Experts say people underestimate how transparent digital communications have become.

"Hacking and spying went mainstream a decade ago," said Dan Kaminsky, an internet security researcher. "Everyone is reading everyone else's emails — girlfriends are reading boyfriends' , bosses are reading employees' — because it's just so easy to do."

Know adversary
Petraeus and his biographer , Paula Broadwell, may have thought the threat was their spouses. So, they reportedly did not send emails, but saved messages to the draft folder to avoid leaving a digital trail. But neither took steps to hide their computers' IP addresses.

Hide location
They could have masked IP addresses using Tor, a popular privacy tool, or used a virtual private network , which adds a layer of security to public Wi-Fi networks.

Go off the record
Choose the "off the record" feature on Google Talk, Google's IM client, which ensures that nothing typed is saved or searchable in either person's Gmail account.

Encrypt messages
Email encryption services , like GPG, help protect digital secrets from eavesdroppers. Without an encryption key, any message stored in an inbox or reached from the cloud will look like gibberish . Wickr, a mobile app, performs a similar service for phones, encrypting video, photos and text, and erasing deleted files for good.

Set self-destruct timer
Services like 10 Minute Mail allow users to open an email address and send a message, and the address self-destructs 10 minutes later. Wickr also allows users to set a self-destruct timer so they can control how long a recipient can view a file before it disappears.

Drop draft idea
Saving emails in a shared draft folder is no safer than transmitting them. They are stored in the cloud. Even if they are deleted, email service providers can be compelled to provide copies.

Real estate cos go for reputation managment on Facebook, Twitter

NEW DELHI: If you are one of the thousands of homebuyers whose house-warming plans have been delayed by two years because of developers being behind schedule, where else to vent but on social media? According to real estate research firm Liases Foras, nearly half of the 3,23,000 homes that were to be delivered in 2013 will be delayed; and a third of these won't be ready before 2015.

Even as disgruntled home buyers spit venom on Facebook and Twitter, real estate companies are scurrying to online reputation managers for cover.

To be sure, social networks have become an ideal platform for irate consumers to get back - justifiably or otherwise - at developers. Still, when it comes to real estate, hell has no fury like a homebuyer made to wait. Builders with delayed projects are being forced to either hire external agencies or set up in-house online reputation management teams.

Tata Housing recently hired Social Wavelength to leverage the digital media to be more accessible to consumers across India and also track comments on the brand in the online space. UnitechBSE 11.13 %, Puravankara ProjectsBSE 0.46 %, Lodha and Supertech are also resorting to online reputation management.

"When we see negative conversations, we try build on them and put the right perspective forward, reason it out. If there has been a project delay, we tell them the ground reality about why it happened," says Rajeeb Kumar Dash, head of marketing services at Tata Housing. Many of the comments online stem from miscommunication, which needs to be sorted out. What is also important is to set expectations of a customer right," says Jack Bastian Nazareth, COO of Puravankara Projects, who sees online reputation management as an extension of customer relationship management.

Such damage control has a two-pronged approach. One is to flag out negative views, conversation, and comments about a brand, address them and make the customer feel that she is being listened to. "Consumers in India are very forgiving. They are fine if their voice is heard and responded to. A solution may take time, but being heard takes care of most of the problems," says Hareesh Tibrewala, joint chief executive officer of Social Wavelength.

The other strategy, he points out, is to amplify positive views. "It is also important to identify those who are talking positively about a brand and then to amplify that to create a feel good about the brand," adds Tibrewala.

Mumbai-based Lodha group uses online forums as a feedback mechanism to understand grievances of customers and then engage directly with them offline as much as possible.

"We have found that a majority of concerns expressed online are due to misinformation or a lack of information and we are able to address these satisfactorily at an individual level through direct engagement," says R Karthik, chief marketing officer, Lodha group.

Apple, Google may be in trouble as EU hints at probe

BRUSSELS: EU regulators are examining the link between technology platform owners and application developers, the EU's antitrust chief said, in a move that could spell trouble for Apple and Google, leaders in a burgeoning industry.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said there was no investigation at present, but that it was possible certain business practices between the two sides could pose anti-competitive concerns in the future.

"Regarding apps, I cannot be explicit, but we are looking into the way some platforms have established or are establishing relationships with other industries, or the creation of apps or the innovators who create apps," Almunia told a conference.

"We are analysing some areas where these issues can be subject to future competition policy cases," he said, without identifying any companies.

Antitrust authorities so far have not publicly expressed any concerns about Apple's so-called application ecosystem.

But some analysts and industry commentators say its closed 'ecosystem' of software, services, content and customer support locks in users and developers and can affect competition.

Platform operators typically take a 30 percent cut of app and game revenues, making this a lucrative revenue source.

Other platform operators are Microsoft and Facebook.

iPhone 5: Apple iOS beats Google Android in US

HELSINKI: Early success for the iPhone 5 smartphone has helped Apple to overtake Google's Android software in the United States, research firm Kantar WorldPanel said on Tuesday.

Apple's US market share in the 12 weeks to October 31 more than doubled from a year ago to 48.1 per cent, putting it within reach of the record 49.3 per cent it managed in early 2012.

Android's share dropped to 46.7 per cent from 63.3 per cent, Kantar WorldPanel's data showed, but it continues to dominate in key European markets. The platform 74 per cent market share in Germany and 82 per cent in Spain.

CIOs need to change perspective about role: Survey

Written By Unknown on Senin, 26 November 2012 | 21.43

NEW DELHI: Gearing up to be a Chief Information Officer (CIO)? It might just pay to combine your technology acumen with some business skills-as companies are increasingly looking at CIOs who understand business as well.

CIOs must refresh the outdated perspectives that other executives hold about their role in order to succeed, according to Ernst & Young's new report DNA of the CIO.

The report, based on a survey of over 300 IT professionals globally, draws on in-depth interviews with a further 25 CIOs and 40 respondents from across the rest of the C-suite (CEO, COO etc), to capture business views about the CIO role today.

The central role that technology has played in every industry and sector of business over the last two decades emphasizes just how big an opportunity exists for the CIO, a Ernst & Young release stated.

CEOs are in clear need of "co-drivers" who combine technology expertise with business skills; however, few CIOs are currently regarded as true members of the executive management team. While they have technological expertise, they are not perceived to have the requisite level of business skill - limiting their potential for change.

Says Samiron Ghoshal, Advisory Partner & Leader - IT Advisory, Ernst & Young, India ,"the status quo will need to change. CIOs need to break out of their comfort zones, within the data center. While we are seeing this progression in several fast-growth organizations in India, there is still a long way to go for the majority of CIOs."

If CIOs are truly going to deliver on the potential remit of their role, and the potential of IT, they will need to work harder to enhance their position. Less than half (48%) of the C-suite executives think the standing of CIOs has improved in recent years on a range of issues, from product innovation through to helping deliver on the operational agility of the company. While 60% of CIOs think they add strong value to fact-based decision-making when setting corporate strategy, just 35% of their C-suite peers agree, resulting in just 43% of CIOs reporting that they are deeply involved in strategic decision-making.

Terry Thomas, advisory partner & leader - IT risk & assurance, E&Y, India comments, "Future CIOs will need to be able to show proactively how IT can be used as a source of innovation within the business, rather than merely a support function."

Google, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft websites hacked in Pak

The Pakistani websites of approximately as many as 300 companies, including that of tech giants Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple, were hacked and defaced during the weekend by a Turkish group named Eboz. Media reports have previously attributed around 600 other instances of hacking to this group.

On one of the defaced websites, the members of Eboz posted: "Why we have wasted our time to hack Pakistani sites? Just because let us convey our message. We warned you and we were willing to fix your vulnerability but you think we are jokers and you guys took it as a joke? Yes it's time to bang you guys!!"

The group seems to have exploited and highlighted a vulnerability of PKNIC, the TLD (Top Level Domain) operator that regulates all sites with .pk domains.

Some of the other companies affected by this systematic take down of services include Cisco, Visa, HSBC, Coca Cola, Blogspot, Sony, HP, eBay and PayPal, among others. While writing this report, some of the websites seems to have been restored; however, a few still seem to be under the hacker cell's control. Those trying to access Pakistani websites of iTunes, Blogspot, eBay, PayPal etc are either redirected elsewhere or the websites simply do not open.

The home pages of Google and a few other websites had the pictures of two penguins, with a phrase in Turkish that translates to: "My homies in a friend always there for me/ Have not shot by me with every breath."

Your smartphone can help you stay young

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 25 November 2012 | 21.43

LONDON: Owning a smartphone, watching reality TV shows and beating younger relatives at games are some of the secrets to keeping young, a new study has claimed.

Researchers also found that silver surfers, who spend more time with their grandchildren or try to catch the eye of someone younger tend to feel more alive.

The study of 1,000 over 50's found the secrets of youth include trying new food, fancying a younger celebrity and knowing what Twitter is all likely to give a burst of life, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The research, which was commissioned by healthcare specialist Benenden, found that age really is just a number with the average person claiming their youth secrets lead to them feeling 18 years younger than they are.

During the study, many thought that staying up past midnight led to feeling alive, while eating spicy food and keeping in touch with the local gossip are guaranteed to keep a person fresh.

Using smartphone apps, eating chocolate and having a younger partner all appeared to keep many over fifty people in good nick.

Nine in ten of those surveyed thought that how old you feel as a person mostly depends on your outlook and attitude to life with 70 per cent also saying it's crucial to laugh regularly.

The average respondent was aged 59 - but the age people actually felt was 18 years younger at 41.

'Trying new food' topped the 20 ways to stay young followed by 'Surfing the web' at number 2, 'Reading books that challenge me' at number 3 and 'Having sex' at number 4.

'Dancing around to music' came at number 5, 'Having a Facebook account' at 6 and 'Going out/socialising with grown up kids/ grandchildren' came at number 7.

'Knowing what Twitter is' ranked eight followed by 'Eating chocolate' at 9, 'Staying up past midnight' at 10.

'Eating spicy food' also made to the happiness list at 12, 'Beating younger relatives at games' followed at number 13, 'Keeping up to date with the gossip of people I know' at 14 and 'Getting tipsy' at 15.

The list included 'Go swimming' at 15, 'Catching the eye of someone younger' at 16 and 'Using phone apps' at 17, 'Having a younger partner' at 18.

'Watching the latest cinema releases' and 'Watching the latest television stand' at 19 and 20 position respectively.

HP's allegations don't add up: Autonomy founder

Nov 24, 2012, 05.08PM IST

(Mike Lynch, mathematics…)

LONDON: Mike Lynch, mathematics whiz and former boss of Autonomy, said he can't see how accusations leveled by Hewlett-Packard of dodgy accounting add up to a $5 billion writedown on the software business he sold them last year.

HP said on Tuesday it would write $8.8 billion off its $11.1 billion purchase of the British company, $5 billion of it due to "serious accounting improprieties" and "a wilful effort by Autonomy to mislead shareholders" revealed by a whistleblower and a forensic audit by accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers.

It has alerted regulators on both sides of the Atlantic.

Mike Lynch says he has yet to hire a lawyer and has not spoken to either HP or any investigators, but he has sat down with past accounts of the firm he founded in an attempt to answer the accusations laid out in HP's public statements.

HP's general counsel John Schultz claimed Autonomy created more than $200 million in revenue over a two-year period from 2009, which would amount to 12.5 percent of Autonomy's $1.6 billion in revenues in their annual accounts for 2009 and 2010.

While denying the allegations as "utterly wrong", Lynch said there were three areas where accounting rules gave scope for differences of interpretation.

Accounting rule setters have been working on plans for a decade for common global accounting rules so regulators and investors can compare company accounts, but until that task is complete, there are competing standards that can produce different results for companies doing broadly the same thing.

The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has devised International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), used in more than 100 countries, and the basis for Autonomy's accounts prior to HP's acquisition.

But many US companies such as HP use US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which can differ from IFRS, notably in respect of software revenue recognition.

One of the accusations HP levels against Autonomy's former management is that the company was booking licensing revenue upfront before deals closed, thereby inflating revenue.

"Revenue recognition for software vendors can be complicated, to say the least," accountants Grant Thornton wrote in a note.

This is because software companies often bundle products and services such as licenses, installation, training and maintenance support into a single contract.

Under accounting rules, a company can establish a model for pricing different parts of the contract so that some revenue can be taken up front and the rest over the period of the contract.

Under IFRS this is governed by rule IAS 18. Under US GAAP there are more stringent conditions to satisfy, requiring what is called VSOE, or vendor-specific objective evidence.

"It shouldn't be a surprise this issue is coming up. It shows how loosey-goosey IFRS is," said Lynn E. Turner, former chief accountant of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who was running the SEC department that issued Staff Accounting Bulletin 101, which set a lot of the specific rules around revenue recognition.

Lynch believes that HP might not have yet established its own VSOE model and therefore might not be recognizing revenues upfront, which might result in a restatement of Autonomy revenues.

"All of these deals went through (Autonomy's auditors) Deloitte themselves," said Lynch. "Deloitte apply the test independently of us, and it is a standard test, and it is explicitly stated in the annual report and accounts."

Autonomy would submit every single invoice to Deloitte each quarter as part of the auditing process, added Lynch.

Deloitte said it conducted its audit work "in full compliance with regulation and professional standards", and "categorically denied" any knowledge of improprieties or misrepresentations in Autonomy's financial statements.

Hardware
Another allegation HP has stated in public is that Autonomy mischaracterized revenue from low-margin hardware sales as software sales.

Autonomy always represented itself as a software firm but 10 per cent to 15 per cent of its revenue came from money-losing sales of low-end hardware, HP said.

Lynch said it was not a secret that Autonomy sells hardware. In company reports for 2009-2010, hardware sales accounted for around 8 per cent of revenue. Occasionally, if a customer wanted a desktop, Autonomy would provide a package that might include desktops, for example, along with the software.

In terms of money-losing sales, Lynch acknowledged that in a small number of cases, deals were struck at a slight loss, in exchange for the client agreeing to market Autonomy products.

In those cases, the transaction would be charged as a marketing expense, not a direct cost of sales, but overall accounted for less than 2 percent of total revenues, Lynch said.

Though this "moves the gross margin a percent or two", it doesn't affect profit, he added.

Buyer's guide: Which tablet to buy

NEW YORK: Tablets are at the top of many wish lists but which one to buy? The choice used to be pretty limited, with the iPad dominating the latecomers. But this year, the field is more even, as tablets from Apple's competitors have matured. In addition, Google and Microsoft are diving in with their own tablets, providing more choice.

The first step in the buying process is to decide on the size of the tablet. They fall into two rough categories: the full-sized tablet, pioneered by the iPad, and the half-size tablet, epitomized by the Kindle Fire.

Full-sized tablets, which generally have screens measuring about 10 inches on the diagonal, are better for surfing websites designed for PCs, and far better when it comes to displaying magazines and documents. Overall, they go further toward replacing a laptop. They cost $400 and up.

Half-sized tablets, which have screens measuring roughly 7 inches on the diagonal, are cheaper and lighter, but just as good as full-sized tablets for e-book reading. It's an excellent first computing device for a kid, or a gentle nudge into the digital world for an older adult with little computing experience. This year's crop costs $199 and up, but last year's models are available for less.

If you've settled on a large tablet, here are some top

Apple iPad, fourth generation

Price: Starts at $499

Apple usually updates the iPad once a year, so it was a surprise when it dropped a new model in October, with a faster processor and the new "Lightning" connection and charging port, replacing the wide port inherited from the iPod. Like the third-generation iPad launched in March it has an ultra-high-resolution "Retina" screen. The model's resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels is only surpassed by the Google Nexus 10.

That means the current iPad is two generations ahead of the iPad 2 that was on sale last holiday season. It packs enough improvements to make the upgrade worth it. The iPad 2 is still on sale for $100 less, but it's not a very good value for the money: if $400 is all you can spend, there are better tablets out there than the iPad 2.

While other tablets are starting to approach it in terms of hardware, the iPad still enjoys the best support by far from third parties, both in terms of quality applications and accessories like cases.

One caveat: the base model of the iPad has only 16 gigabytes of storage, which fills up fast these days. The thoughtful giver goes for at least a 32-gigabyte model, for $100 more.

Other than that, there are few downsides to the iPad: no one will frown when opening this package.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Price: Starts at $499

If the Nook is for the avid reader or movie watcher, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is for the creative type. It's the only tablet in our roundup that comes with a "pen" that can be used to write and draw on the screen. In our test, this worked well, though the number of apps that take advantage of the pen is still small. (Other tablets, like the iPad, only respond to finger-like objects, so third-party styluses for them are of necessity thick and clumsy.)

The Note 10.1 runs Google's Android software, giving it access to a wide array of apps originally written for smartphones. The selection is not on par with the iPad's but better than other alternatives.

The Note's screen falls into the low-resolution category, sporting 1,280 by 800 pixels. That's a third of what the iPad musters.

Like the Nook, the Note 10.1's storage memory can be expanded with cards.

The Note's appeal is somewhat niche, but it could be just the thing for the budding or established artist.

Barnes & Noble Nook HD+

Price: Starts at $269

For a book store, Barnes & Noble makes some amazing tablets. The HD+ is its first model that approaches the iPad in size, with a screen that's 9 inches on the diagonal. That makes it slightly smaller than the iPad, and the resolution is lower as well, but still very respectable. At 1,920 by 1,280 pixels, it can show more detail than a living-room HDTV.

The Nook is family-friendly too. You can create user accounts and restrict them from certain content, so there's less risk that your kids will stumble on your copy of "Fifty Shades of Grey."

Like the basic iPad, the basic Nook HD+ comes with just 16 gigabytes of storage memory, but it can be expanded with a microSD memory card. That means another 32 gigabytes will cost you just $25 - a good deal.

But the Nook is the least versatile tablet in our roundup. The number of apps available is small, and it's focused on Barnes & Noble content like e-books, magazines and movies. It doesn't have any cameras, while the competitors have two each. It's best for someone who's likely to stick to media consumption, and doesn't need the latest apps and games.

Microsoft Surface

Price: Starts at $499

Microsoft's first tablet seems at first like a throwback to the first iPad. It's thick, heavy and rugged. But it's really doesn't have much in common with the first iPad or any Apple- or Google-powered tablet. It runs Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 adapted for tablets. It comes with a version of Microsoft's Office suite and the ability to connect to wireless printers and some other peripherals, like USB drives. The covers for it have functional keyboard printed on the inside.

The screen resolution is 1,366 by 768 pixels, placing it in the low-resolution category.

The Surface screams "work, work, work." It's the tablet for those who are wedded to Word and want to take their writing on the go.

One thing to note about the Surface: the basic model starts out with "32 gigabytes" of memory, but of that, only 16 gigabytes are available to the user. It accepts memory cards of up to 64 gigabytes, however, so expanding the memory is cheap.

Note that even though it runs Windows, the Surface doesn't run standard Windows applications. It will run only programs specifically adapted for Windows RT. The selection is, for now, quite limited.

Asus Vivo Tab RT

Price: Starts at $599 with a dock

Asus has a quality line of Android tablets they call "Transformer" because they dock into a keyboard with an extra battery. The combination folds up just like a small laptop and has excellent battery life. The Vivo Tab RT essentially takes a Transformer and stuffs it with Windows RT instead of Android.

The tablet part is smaller and thinner than the Surface. Together with the keyboard, it makes for a familiar little setup: a tiny laptop running Windows. Like the Surface, it has a memory card slot and a USB port. The screen resolution is the same.

The Vivo Tab is a good tool for those who want to get some work done on the commute or plane, or those who can't decide if they want a laptop or a tablet.

Google Nexus 10

Price: Starts at $399

This is Google's first full-size tablet and the only tablet from any manufacturer that beats the screen resolution of the iPad. It boasts 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, a third more than the fourth-generation iPad.

It's also the only tablet in this roundup that has speakers on either side of the screen when it's held horizontally, making for good stereo reproduction when you're watching movies. It has a grippy, rubberized back and widely rounded corners. There's no memory card slot or an option for a cellular modem.

The array of third-party software is wide, just as it is for the Note 10.1. Most people don't associate Google with online books, music or movies, so it may feel odd that the Nexus steers buyers to Google's Play store. Of course, given the open nature of Google's Android operating system, there are apps available for other entertainment stores, including Amazon's, and for streaming services like Netflix.

The Nexus 10 is a snappy performer, and among the iPad's competitors, it comes the closest to matching the versatility of Apple products.

Shopping online? Here's how to get the best deals

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 November 2012 | 21.43

NEW YORK: In a one-day blitz of shopping, consumers are expected to empty their wallets of more than $1 billion on Cyber Monday, the online shopping spree on Nov. 26, according to spending projections from research firm, ComScore.

The day follows closely on the heels of Black Friday on November 23, which kicks off the holiday shopping season at stores, and is often the busiest shopping day for retailers.

Come Monday, not every web-browsing window shopper will hit the "buy" button, and 65 percent of shopping carts are typically abandoned by online shoppers, says the Baynard Institute in Copenhagen. These consumers may be motivated by a belief, often correct, that there's a better deal out there. Cyber Monday 2012 may offer the best deals on technology products this year, says Brian Hoyt, senior writer for RetailMeNot.com, a coupon code site.

That's because merchants have held back their best deals for the Black Friday-Cyber Monday shopping bonanza to whittle down their inventory, and they are likely to sell out without needing to discount further, he says. Here are strategies that should help you navigate Cyber Monday and enjoy the best possible prices this year.

Make a list
Successful Cyber Monday shopping is not about aimlessly browsing or getting everything in one place, says Hoyt. It's about honing your list down to specific items and searching for the lowest prices for each of them. One way to do this is to browse at stores over the holiday weekend, to scan bar codes of desired products into a price-checking application like Red Laser, and to check reviews or browse ads at home.

"If I were a consumer trying to be as thrifty as possible, I would invest my time at the aggregated websites that are compiling the Cyber Monday deals," says Andrew Baker, assistant professor of marketing in the College of Business Administration at San Diego State University. (Some such sites are dealnews.com, cybermonday.com and slickdeals.net) And, when stores are shut, check for deals online. "That's what retailers want you to do," says Dan Olds, who runs Gabriel Consulting Group, a retail trend watching firm.

Maximise savings
Once you've narrowed down your wish list, it should take minutes to find the lowest price, says RetailMeNot's Hoyt. Simply plug the item into a search engine like Nextag, Google Shopping or Pricegrabber, and evaluate. Then, enter details on the stores with the best prices into a coupon code site (such as RetailMeNot.com or couponcabin.com, dealcatcher.com) to see if there are codes that come up.

When you do the math, you may find that the merchant in the No. 2 spot may be offering a 10 percent discount deal or free shipping, offering better overall value than the store in the top spot. Indeed, try to avoid shipping costs altogether. To broaden your chances of finding deals, "Like" and follow your favorite stores on Twitter and Facebook; some retailers will post deals just for their online fans.
If you are an active online shopper, you may receive personalized deal offers as the holiday season progresses. For example, if you like to buy Coach handbags at Nordstrom, you might see offers to get 20-per cent off of Coach accessories.

"The conversion rate of a typical coupon deal is less than one percent, which is very low, but the conversion rate for tuned and personalized offers is much higher - in the 5 to 10 percent range," says Kevin Sterneckert, vice president of retail research at Gartner Group. Lands End, LL Bean and CVS are among retailers who are tapping their databases to entice shoppers with customized offers. Should you jump at these deals? Only if the items are on your shopping list and you've done your research on prices.

Best payment methods
You can reap additional rewards by picking your mode of payment wisely. For online shoppers, Brian Kelly of ThePointsGuy.com recommends checking your credit card's rewards website and visiting retail links from there. Some cards will offer a 5 per cent bonus for such transactions. You can check your card benefits for details.

This year, PayPal is offering price-match guarantees and free return shipping for purchases made using PayPal. Citi, Visa and MasterCard also frequently offer price matching. Other shoppers rely on various reward and cash-back cards to maximize their benefits. If you've taken all these steps and still don't like the deal you're getting, you could take your chances and wait - December 17 is "Free Shipping Day" (freeshippingday.com) for procrastinators who want a day of their own.

How Google Maps helped in completing 5,000 mile walk

SYDNEY: A former Marine Sergeant has reportedly completed a 408 day, 5000 mile (8047 kilometre) walk through nine countries in south-east Asia, using Google Maps.

Winston Fiore, 27 made this journey to raise funds for the International Children's Surgical Foundation, an organisation that provides free plastic surgeries to children in developing countries, mostly who suffer from a cleft palate.

The tale begins in 2007, when Fiore was deployed with the Marine Corps to Senegal for three weeks of training and was struck by how little of the world he had seen, following which he resolved to spend a year travelling on foot through a developing part of the world, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to the paper, he began mapping out his trip in 2010, creating what he describes as a "pretty oval" route that would take him through some of the biggest metropolitan areas in Brunei, China, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, covering about 5000 miles.

The first week of his trek, he made printouts of the walking directions from Google Maps, but he fumbled through the pages each day, trying to figure out where to turn, or if he had gotten off track. He therefore discovered buying a SIM card in whatever country he was in, and was able to get directions directly off his phone, the paper said.

Then there was the time, also in China, where the directions led him to the edge of a river with no bridge in sight, and as he was starting to freak out, he saw a man who ferries people across the river, and he got a ride for free.

"It's not like the directions said, 'There will be an old Chinese man to ferry you across the river, and he likes mangos.' But the walking directions routed me there, and he was able to get me across the river," said Fiore.

Fiore completed his journey on Tuesday, and has raised 65,000 dollars of his 75,000 dollar goal to give to the International Children's Surgical Foundation, and also discovered the unexpected, with the help of a mapping app, the paper added.

HP's allegations don't add up: Autonomy founder

Resellers
Another allegation made by HP is that Autonomy booked some licensing deals with partners as revenue, even though no customer bought products.

Autonomy generates most of its sales revenues through deals with over 400 clients including IBM and Wipro who resell the software to end-users.

Under IFRS, revenue can be recognized if sales are delivered in the current period, there is no right of return policy, collection is probable and the fee is fixed and determinable.

Lynch said only deals that fulfilled these criteria were booked as revenue.

Under US GAAP, if Autonomy's sale was contingent on the reseller's sale, the latter must be completed before Autonomy can claim it as revenue.

Even so, Lynch said over 90 percent of resellers completed sales. In some cases, he said, it was perfectly reasonable to sell to a reseller with no end user as they might use the software themselves.

While these accounting differences could have an impact, Lynch believes it is hard to reach the dizzying figures that HP has come up with.

"There is nothing there that you can warrant such a big effect in terms of writedown," he insisted.

Sony worse off than Panasonic: Fitch

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 23 November 2012 | 21.43

TOKYO: Panasonic has a better chance of surviving Japan's consumer electronics slump than rival Sony because of its unglamorous but stable appliance business of washing machines and fridges, credit rating agency Fitch said on Friday.

Fitch cut Panasonic's rating by two notches to BB and Sony three notches to BB minus on Thursday, the first time one of the three major ratings agencies have put the credit-worthiness of either company into junk-bond territory.

Rival agencies Moody's and S&P rate both of Japan's consumer electronic giants at the same level, just above junk status. Moody's last cut its rating on Panasonic on Tuesday.

Panasonic "has the advantage of a relatively stable consumer appliance business that is still generating positive margins," Matt Jamieson, Fitch's head of Asia-Pacific, said in a conference call on Friday to explain its ratings downgrades.

But at Sony, he added, "most of their electronic business are loss making, they appear to be overstretched."

Japan's TV industry has been bested by cheaper, more innovative models from Samsung Electronics and other foreign rivals, while tablets and smartphones built by Apple have become the dominant consumer electronics devices.

Investors are focusing on the fate of Sony and Panasonic after another struggling Japanese consumer electronics firm, Sharp Corp, maker of the Aquos TV, secured a $4.6 billion bail-out by banks including Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

Sony and Panasonic have chosen divergent survival paths.

Panasonic, maker of the Viera TV, is looking to expand its businesses in appliances, solar panels, lithium batteries and automotive components. Appliances amount to around only 6 percent of the company's sales, but they generate margins of more than 6 percent and make up a big chunk of operating profit.

Sony, creator of the Walkman, is doubling down on consumer gadgets in a bid to regain ground from Samsung and Apple in mobile devices while bolstering digital cameras and gaming.

The latest downgrades will curtail the ability of both Japanese companies to raise money in credit markets to help fund restructurings of their business portfolios.

For now, however, that impact is limited, given the support Panasonic and Sony are receiving from their banks.

In October, Panasonic, which expects to lose $10 billion in the year to March 31, secured $7.6 billion of loan commitments from banks including Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ, a financing backstop its says will help it avoid having to seek capital in credit markets.

Sony, which has forecast a full-year profit of $1.63 billion helped by the sale of a chemicals business to a Japanese state bank, announced plans to raise $1.9 billion through a convertible bond before the latest rating downgrade.

Thomson Reuters' Starmine structural model, which evaluates market views of credit risk, debt levels and changes in asset values gives Panasonic and Sony an implied rating of BB minus. Sharp's implied rating is three notches lower at B minus.

Standard & Poor's rates Panasonic and Sony at BBB, the second lowest of the investment grade, while Moody's Investors Service has them on Baa3, the lowest of its high-grade category. Moody's has a negative outlook for both firms while S&P sees a stable outlook for Panasonic and a negative one for Sony.

Stock markets in Japan were closed on Friday for a national holiday.

It may be noted that AFII Corp, a Singapore based investment bank, represents several top India-based companies based in India, such as Israel Electric and Mekorot, for public-public cooperation projects with India and the national government.

It is likely that the website hacking is an outburst from Islamic fundamentalists to express their anger against Israel's recent bombing in Gaza. All efforts are on to recover the website which should take between 24-48 hours as per information provided by the IT team at AFII.

Government will give option to companies whose licences were cancelled to adjust entry fee (paid for licences in 2008) in the amount they have to pay as per their preference, a DoT official explained.

"They can set-off entire amount from initial set-of payment or from the gross amount they have to pay. Based on their indication, we will re-calculate their installment amount," the official said.

Uninor, in which Telenor had majority stake, paid Rs 1,658 crore for licences in 2008, Videocon (then Datacom) gave around Rs 1,500 crore and 13 licences of Idea Cellular cost the company Rs 1,168 crore.

As per decision of Empowered Group of Ministers on spectrum, the benefit of adjustment is only for those companies who have not been found guilty or there is no case pending in court in 2G matter.

Why companies are banning BYOD at work

More and more companies are banning employees from using their own devices, like personal mobile phones, at work. A study by ISACA, a non-profit global association of over one lakh IT audit, security, risk and governance professionals, has found that nearly half the companies surveyed in India have security policies that prohibit employees' devices at the office. The fear has to do with risk to the company from the leak of valuable information.

According to the global study, India stood first among its global counterparts in prohibiting outside devices, with nearly half (46%) of Indian companies successfully deploying a policy to prohibit the use of personal mobile devices for work. This was followed by Europe (39%), China (30%) and the US (29%).

Moreover, about 47% of Indian companies reported deploying password management controls for employees' devices as a security layer, compared to 44% of companies in China and Europe, and 42% of companies in the US. But fewer Indian companies showed an interest in remote wipe capability (29%) — which allows employers to erase the contents of an employee's personal device as a security measure — compared to counterparts in the US (46%), China (39%) and Europe (37%).

Avinash Kadam, ISACA India Task Force adviser, says: "The survey results are an eye-opener and present an interesting dichotomy from the governance of IT perspective of Indian enterprises, compared to global counterparts. It is always a challenge to retrieve an enterprise's data when an employee who uses a personal device for work purposes, leaves the company. It is imperative to structure a clear policy for BYOD (bring your own devices)." As an agency, however, ISACA advocates an embrace-and-educate approach: Embrace the technology and the value it brings, but ensure ongoing and pro-active education and training on security policies and risks among employees.
