SRINAGAR: Mobile internet services were restored in the Kashmir Valley after remaining suspended for a week in the wake of hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru.

The internet services, which were snapped last Saturday, were restored late last evening, providing relief to nearly five lakh mobile internet subscribers in the valley.

Internet services were snapped as a precautionary measure as authorities apprehended that trouble-makers may misuse social networking tools for fomenting trouble by spreading rumours. All mobile internet connections stopped functioning on the morning of February 9 as the news about hanging of Guru broke out.

In the past, authorities have suspended internet and mobile services during the 2010 summer unrest in the Valley as some people used the internet to mobilise protests.

These services are suspended on every Republic day and Independence Day as a precautionary measure as well.
