The company's plans were aided by the government's decision to let wireless broadband airwaves (BWA) holders provide voice services by paying just Rs 1,680 crore. RIL had in 2010 acquired Infotel for Rs 4,800 crore to get pan-India licences for 4G data services.
RIL, through its subsidiary Infotel, is now considering setting up telecom towers across the country to offer bundled voice and data services , moving away from its earlier "asset light" strategy which entailed tower-sharing deals with other telcos, a source in the know said.
The company plans to set up 1 lakh towers across the country in phases and would start the launch from its corporate headquarters in Navi Mumbai. The source, however, did not rule out the option of buying a stake in a telco for tower infrastructure, if required. When contacted, an RIL spokesperson declined to comment.
"This is an excellent opportunity for RIL as it has to pay Rs 1,680 crore for voice, which accounts for 85% of telcos' revenues," said a telecom analyst. Investment adviser S P Tulsian is, however, not too excited with RIL's move. "RIL bagged the licences in 2010 and was supposed to launch its 4G services by 2012. It's already running late and now if it sets up its own infrastructure , it may delay the launch by another three years. So, buying out an existing telco is the best option before RIL," Tulsian told TOI.
RIL shares on the BSE gained marginally to close at Rs 847 while that of its rival telco Bharti Airtel went down marginally to close at Rs 314 in a flat Mumbai market on Monday.
