HP Slate 21 AiO runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and comes with a 21.5-inch IPStouchscreen. The company will offer the keyboard and mouse set to give it the true desktop PC feel. Under the hood is the 1.9GHz quad-core Tegra 4 processor and 1GB RAM, along with 8GB internal storage and microSD support.
Obviously, where the Slate 21 AiO differs from Windows PCs is the user experience, which is more aimed at content consumers than content creators. You can enjoy Android games on a big full HD screen, though the pixel density is a poor 102ppi. However, we didn't mind this on a huge display, though we can judge that better in different lighting conditions than what we had in the predominantly dark conference room. Movies, photos, documents (you get free KingSoft document editor with the device) will largely remain the same as any desktop PC.
You also get the Splashtop 2 HD software with the Slate 21 AiO that enables you to control Windows PCs remotely. This is very different from dual-OS computers like the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon (which runs Android apps in Windows operating system) and the Asus Transformer AiO (which turns into an Android tablet and Windows PC).
Apart from the desktop mode, HP Slate 21 AiO can also be used as an overgrown tablet. Just lay it down on a flat surface and use it to play games, watch movies etc.
At Rs 24,990, you can get several AiOs in India or even assemble the PC, but HP Slate 21 gives you a 21.5-inch touchscreen and access to Android apps. While many or even most buyers may not find it to be the best idea, this computer may find some traction among those who do not use their computers for things other than entertainment.
However, even in that part, you get pretty low-end stuff, like just 8GB internal storage and just 1GB RAM. Though you can expand the storage via SD card in Slate 21, you may find the amount of RAM to be quite inadequate. Nowadays, Android apps are more resource hungry than ever and we find that 1GB is hardly sufficient while using phones and tablets for multitasking.
You also get three USB ports, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth in the AiO, but no HDMI output. Mobile data connectivity is also absent, though it is hardly needed considering you will not be roaming around with a machine this size.
Overall, we feel that HP's Android AiO serves only a niche market, but is a decent device if you really enjoy the new touchscreen push and want a big-screen home-based device for family entertainment.
