HP Slatebook x2: Hands on

NEW DELHI: HP India has launched an Android tablet aimed at the consumer market, the Slatebookx2. This device is priced at Rs 39,990 and takes on the likes of fourth-gen Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and Sony Xperia Tablet Z. We did a short hands-on to see whether it has what it takes to beat the trio in this segment. Here's our take:

HP Slatebookx2 is an Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) with a 10.1-inch full HD touchscreen. The screen is bright and clear, though it does not match the Retina levels of the latest iPad.

The unique thing about this device is that it comes with a keyboard dock and lacks a microUSB port. While we have seen several keyboard docks in the market, this tablet is the only one by a major manufacturer like HP that offers such an accessory. You can control the device using the trackpad and the chiclet keyboard, though it may take some time before you get used to the feel. However, we feel using this keyboard does not serve much purpose unless you use your tablet frequently for writing documents.

Coming to the rest of the device, Slatebookx2 is powered by a Tegra 4 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.9GHz. The processor is powerful, but we can compare it to the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, fourth-gen Apple iPad and Sony Xperia Tablet Z only
after benchmarking. It comes with ample
2GB RAM, 64GB internal storage and support for 32GBmicroSD card. Along with the microSD card in tablet mode, you can also add a SD card in keyboard mode.

The tablet comes with two batteries, one in the tablet itself and the other in the keyboard dock. HP claims that Slatebookx2, powered by two batteries, lasts 14 hours on a single charge. This is more than what its major rivals offer, but we are curious to see how long it lasts in only the tablet mode.

HP has used polycarbonate in manufacturing this device. Though plastic is hardly the material of choice in high-end tablets, the manufacturer has done a great job with this product's looks. The designing is also great, with tapered edges on one side and all connectivity ports on the other. In tablet mode, Slatebookx2 is quite light and most likely weighs around 600gram. However, it becomes quite hefty when the keyboard dock (which houses the bigger battery) is added.

You get a full USB port in this device, but the charger is proprietary. The worst thing about the device, we feel, is the lack of mobile data. In a tablet priced at Rs 40,000, you would expect that you would be allowed 3G connectivity for on-the-go usage. For reasons of its own, HP has left it out.

We can only give a final judgement about the HP Slatebookx2 after a full review. For now, we will say it has its merits (long battery, ample storage options, full HD screen, mother USB and light weight) and a few demerits (no 3G connectivity, proprietary charger).
