The company has already showcased its second-generation Nexus 7 tablet and announced that the next version of Android will be named KitKat. It is widely expected that Google will unveil its next smartphone when it showcases Android 4.4, its upcoming mobile operating system.
However, those awaiting the Nexus 5 smartphone do not have to wait too long. Leaked pictures of the upcoming device have hit the internet, courtesy tech website PhoneScoop. The website found the image of the handset from the website of Federal Communications Commission, which handles certifications for gadgets in the US. The FCC documents show that the next-generation Nexus phone will have a 4.96-inch screen.
The leaked image shows a design similar to that of Nexus 4, with curved edges, but with a bigger camera lens. This is consistent with a previously leaked image of the Nexus 5 that emerged online when Google announced the name of Android 4.4.
The photo taken from the FCC website shows that the phone has a plastic back with matte finish, but no Nexus branding. This is likely to be a back cover to conceal the design of the rear panel, since the previously leaked image of the phone shows a glass back and the Nexus name on the rear.
It has long been rumoured that the Nexus 5 will be manufactured by LG, which also made the Nexus 4 smartphone. It is expected that the upcoming handset will be based on the LG G2 and run on a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and feature a 13MP camera.
Google is expected to launch both Android 4.4 and Nexus 5 at an event in October. The company has given a price cut to the currently available Nexus 4.
