Android tablets earn more revenue than Apple’s iPad for the first time

NEW DELHI: Android tablets had already left Apple iPad tablets behind in number of shipments. Now the Google operating system-powered tablets have also stolen a march over Apple tablets in revenue, claims a research note.

According to a research note by Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, for the first time during the third quarter of 2013 (3Q2013), Android devices accounted for a greater share of the market in revenue terms than iOS. Android revenue share reached 46.2% in third quarter, for the first time exceeding iPad share of 45.6%. Android's unit share grew to 66.7% from 58.5% a year ago.

The growth in Android tablet market is said to be largely driven by Samsung and Lenovo devices. Apple's iPad share declined to 29.7% from 40.2% during the quarter, according to the note.

Huberty reportedly extrapolated her numbers using the recent IDC report. As per IDC's worldwide quarterly tablet tracker, Android products drove much of the shipment growth in the market as Apple iOS-powered tablets growth stalled and Windows tablets continued to struggle during the third quarter of 2013.

With no new iPad product launches in the second or third quarter to drive volume, Apple experienced a quarter-over-quarter decline in shipments from 14.6 million in 2Q13 to 14.1 million in 3Q13. Year over year, iPad shipments grew less than one percent.

According to IDC, Apple's slowing growth, can in part, be accrued to the company's decision in late 2012 to move its product launches from earlier in the year to the fourth quarter. However, with the sales of the new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina starting, the agency expects Apple to enjoy robust shipment growth during the fourth quarter.

Worldwide tablet shipments grew to 47.6 million units in the third quarter of 2013, according to IDC.
