Foodstagramming becoming a trend in India

Do you always tuck into that tantalizing appetizer immediately after the waiter brings it to your table? Or do you whip out your smartphone to quickly snap its picture first?

If you love food and are even remotely tech-savvy, chances are that you'll be clicking your grub... and immediately uploading it online for posterity. If you are what you eat, then people today aren't shy of revealing their true selves to the world by photographing — and sharing practically every good looking meal they try.

Fashion stylist Chandni Sareen's Instagram and Facebook feeds are filled with collages of exotic locales, cocktails and cupcakes that she has snapped up on myriad trips. "It's a good way to connect with friends back home instead of posting plain written updates; more so when I try an unusual local dish and want them to see it for themselves," says Sareen.

Agrees Dr Susan Albers, a US-based clinical psychologist specializing in eating issues. "Documenting what you eat tells your friends a lot about who you are - your habits, personality, preferences and culinary weaknesses," she writes.

What you eat and how you portray it is just as much a distinguishing personal characteristic as how you dress or what kind of music you listen to. Fashion blogger Karishma Rajani, for instance, shares her love for baking desserts and rustling up organic dishes through her food diaries. "Food is just as much about visuals as it is about taste," she says.

The current explosion of this trend among Indians has many triggers. "While reality cooking shows like Masterchef Australia and Top Chef are showing the average viewers the infinite combinations one can put on a plate, Indian restaurants are paying more attention to presentation and experimenting with vegan cuisine and molecular gastronomy," says food curator and consultant Insia Lacewalla.

Add to that the variety of smartphones that rival traditional digital cameras, and what you get is a savvy foodie who wants to spread his culinary discoveries.

While photo sharing sites like Instagram and Pinterest are bombarded with delectable images, networks like Foodspotting encourage people to visually discover good food instead of reading and writing reviews. "I would trust the feedback of someone I know rather than a professional review," says lifestyle blogger Magali Vaz.

Then, of course, is the high of bragging about how decadently or healthily you eat! But don't be too click-happy. Too much of a good thing is bad, even if it's great food!

Tips for shooting mouth-watering pictures * Play around with angles. Angle the camera or smartphone lens in different ways. Use different perspectives to depict various layers of the dish. * Use props. A share-worthy picture isn't just about what's on the plate. A pair of sunglasses here, some cool cutlery there, will make the shot a whole lot interesting. * Use your elbows to form a makeshift tripod. * Make good use of photoediting tools. Tweaking the colour contrast, sharpness, brightness and saturation can turn a plain image of a dish into a visual must-have-now delight. If your smartphone doesn't come pre-loaded with photoediting tools, download a few free apps. * Don't use flash; it's like poison for food photography. If you find yourself clicking dinner mains in low light, position the camera in such a way that there are no shadows or dark spots. * Work with dishes that have photo-friendly colours like various shades of red, green, yellow and orange.

What are people sharing online? * 25% Food diary: Pictures that declare 'What I ate today' * 22% Self creations: Showing off recipes one has tried * 16% Special occasion: Documenting a special event * 12% Food art: Using food to create artistic photographs * 10% Social event: Capturing a moment of family or friends eating together
