Pratt co-founded and headed the consulting business of Infosys in 2004. In September he was moved from that responsibility to head the utilities and resources vertical in North America.
Infosys sent the following statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission: "On November 15, 2013, Mr Stephen R Pratt, head of utilities and resources, North America, member, executive council, conveyed his intention to resign from the company, effective January 31, 2014."
It's not clear why Pratt chose to leave. But the responsibility change in September is a possible reason. While in his previous role as consulting head he reported directly to CEO SD Shibulal, in his new role, he was to report into V Balakrishnan, the company's board member in charge of BPO, the India market and Lodestone, the Swiss consulting company that Infosys acquired last year.
It's not clear where Pratt is moving to. But speculation is rife that he may go to iGate, the company that is now headed by Ashok Vemuri. Vemuri left Infosys in September to take on the iGate CEO role. There have been a series of exits from iGate since he took on that responsibility, and he needs to fill those positions.
Infosys has been witnessing an exodus of senior executives ever since the return of NR Narayana Murthy as chairman in June. Some of these appear to be the result of Murthy taking a close stock of individual performances across functions, and particularly in sales. Infosys has had a poor track record in sales growth in the past two years compared to that of rivals TCS, Cognizant and HCL, and the reason Murthy felt compelled to return to his role in the company after having retired.
Basab Pradhan, the global sales and marketing head, quit in July. Sudhir Chaturvedi, vice president and financial services head for the Americas, and Ashok Gopinath, who was head of the financial services & insurance labs, are others who have quit over the past few months.
Pratt joined Infosys after 12 years as a senior partner at Deloitte Consulting. Prior to that, he worked for eight years at Booz, Allen & Hamilton. In 2003 and 2005, Consulting Magazine listed Pratt among the top 25 consultants in the world.
Infosys's website has this to say about Pratt in his profile: "As the leader of consulting and systems integration, Mr Pratt has created a two-billion dollar, 30,000-person organization. In 2004, Mr Pratt co-founded Infosys Consulting which set the standard for next generation service delivery by combining classic management consulting with global delivery. This organization is wholly dedicated to helping clients realize measurable business value from innovations in operating models, business processes, and information."
