NEW DELHI: A unit of Apple's new iPad Air caught fire spontaneously in a Vodafone store in Canberra, Australia. A Vodafone spokesperson said that "a burst of flames" came from the Lighting port of the model, which was being used to demonstrate the new features of Apple's latest tablet to customers.

The explosion forced authorities to evacuate the store as it was filled with smoke and the iPad Air continued to emanate sparks from the Lighting port. Though no one was injured, the store officials called the fire brigade to extinguish the flames.

The iPad Air model was destroyed in the fire and only the cracked screen and charred metal casing remained.

An Apple official reportedly collected the defective iPad Air model to ascertain the cause of the explosion. However, Apple has refused to comment on this.

In August, Apple started a programme to exchange fake or third-party iPhone, iPad and iPod chargers with official unit. The initiative was started in response to numerous units of Apple gadgets catching fire after being charged from unauthorized chargers.
