WASHINGTON: A smartphone app has been developed that lets young users to identify and report cyberbullies to authorities.

The revolutionary STOPit app allows school students to choose from four options of 'Stop it, Help it, Report it, Friend it,' letting them document harmful activity, anonymously report bullying of other students and reach out to a 24-hour helpline.

According to the New York Daily News, the app enables students to easily capture malicious behavior with their Apple or Android smartphone and send it to adult contacts or officials with the touch of a button.

Stopbulling.org, a website by the US Department of Health and Human Services, welcomed the app and revealed that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 teens will report being bullied and more than 70 percent will say they have seen bullying of others.

The app has two versions that can be purchased by schools and distributed among their students' phones and currently five schools are part of the trial run programme.
