NEW DELHI: Flexible and bendable screens are the new buzzwords in the technology industry, with all major manufacturers readying display panels for the next generation of gadgets. The latest to join the list is Apple, which has been granted patent for a flexible sapphire display.

The wraparound display patented by Apple can be used on several shapes, including "hollow cylinder, a hollow tube with an oval, triangular, or rectangular cross-sectional shape, or other hollow shapes." The display will be made by extracting sapphire from molten liquid aluminium.

This is not the first time Apple will work with sapphire. The company's iPhone 5S comes with a fingerprint sensor called TouchID, which is uses sapphire as one of the crucial materials of construction. Sapphire is used in top-end smartphones, by the likes of Vertu, to make scratchproof touchscreens.

Apple's new technology will allow the content on the display to remain stationary (relative to user's position) even as the device is moved. By rotating the display, users will be able to update or change apps like documents, maps, music tracks etc, says the filing.

The display will also have a 'ticker mode', which will show data from various apps and sensors all around the circular display, much like a stock ticker. With a downward swipe on the display, users will be able to flip pages on an e-book, turn the volume down in songs or control play/stop/forward in videos.

Apple's patent filing reveals that this display can be used in iMacs, iPads, Macbooks, iPhones and iPods. Considering that the filing talks about using it in hollow cylinders and other shapes, it may also be used in a smartwatch or similar wristbands. Apple is said to be working on a smartwatch currently.

Earlier this year, the company applied for another patent for a wraparound AMOLED display. It is rumoured that the upcoming iPhone model will have a 4.7-inch wraparound screen curved around the sides.

Samsung has already showcased the prototype of a smartphone wraparound touchscreen, the curved areas of this phone can be used to display virtual buttons. It also unveiled the world's first smartphone with a curved screen this year, named Galaxy Round, and has announced that it will launch its first bendable phone next year and flexible handset by 2016.
