The Icann recently announced a Center for Excellence in DNS security here in India. Why?
ICANN's top priority is and has always been the safety, security and resiliency of the Domain Name System (DNS). This new centre will further ICANN's commitment to the DNS by researching solutions to some of the greatest threats posed to its integrity.
As the US finds itself at the center of a surveillance storm, you have taken an official stance of "accelerating the globalization of ICANN and IANA functions." Can you elaborate on that? What resistance, if any, have you faced in implementing this so far?
ICANN's efforts to increase its international presence have been ongoing and began long before the news reports of digital surveillance. We are and always have been an international organization that operates under the multi-stakeholder model. What that means is anyone in the world can join in the discussion and have their voice heard. The ICANN community is expansive, all-inclusive and represents the views of people from every segment -- from consumers to businesses to governments.
On top of that, we hold meetings all around the globe at various times a year, and we're expanding our offices to every continent. Right now, we have hub offices in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Singapore, and engagement offices in Montevideo, Brussels, Washington and Beijing.
Tell us more about the new gTLD (global Top Level Domain) programme. What kind of adoption do you expect for this in the Indian markets?
The introduction of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) into the DNS is a huge step in increasing global internet adoption. For the first time, internet users across the world will be able to engage online entirely in their native languages. IDNs will foster internet usage around the globe, and particularly in regions previously underserved by the internet. Some of the included languages are: Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Thai.
You spoke about "palpable change" in the internet next year at your recent India visit. What will this mean for an end user?
The internet is about to experience one of the greatest changes in its structure since its creation. The introduction of new gTLDs is going to profoundly change the way people around the world use the internet. The goal of the programme is to foster choice and competition within the marketplace.
However, it's up to the consumers to decide what that ultimately means. We have given innovators a blank canvas, which they can use to paint the internet's future.
