A report by The Register cites sources at Dell saying that the company will let go of 30% of its sales and marketing executives in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Twenty percent of the sales staff in the US may also face the axe.
The sources do not have information on job cut plans of the company in Asia Pacific and rest of the Americas regions.
"The thinking at Dell-the-man (CEO and founder Michael Dell) level is thought to involve a realization that the sales force, traditionally attuned to PC and server box-shifting, cannot re-organize itself," the report says.
Dell does not release the number of people working in each function, thus the number of sales and marketing employees is unclear. It employs 1,11,300 people worldwide.
In December, the company asked employees across the globe to participate in a 'voluntary separation programme', wherein 'eligible' members of the workforce were given the option to quit in exchange of a severance package, much like a layoff.
A Business Insider source says that the company will release the names of employees accepted under this programme on Jan 13. Sales, finance, services and accounting departments are worst affected by this programme, says the source.
