New Microsoft Office for Mac coming this year

NEW DELHI: Even though Apple has made the iWork productivity suite available for free with all new iPhones, iPads and computers, Microsoft is still developing Office suite for Mac computers.

Microsoft Germany's head of Office suite, Thorsten Pretty told technology website Computerwoche at CeBIT 2014 industry conference that the company will release the next version of Office for Mac this year, most likely in the second half.

Pretty said Microsoft has already passed on the new version of Office for Mac to enterprise customers behind close doors.

The new version will be free for existing Office 365 users. A Microsoft executive told PC World, "While I don't have details to share on timing when it's available, Office 365 subscribers will automatically get the next Office for Mac at no additional cost."

It is expected that Microsoft will soon unveil Android and iPad versions of Office suite also. At a recent conference for Sharepoint online collaboration suite, Microsoft had said it has come up with the Software Development Kit (SDK) for Office 365 Android app. Apple has already released the iPhone app for Office suite.

The Office for Mac application suite last got an update in 2010, but the unit developing the suite for Macs was soon disbanded. The division was made part of Office 365 online productivity suite.
