NEW DELHI: Google has announced an update for Google Glass, its smart eyewear just ahead of the wearable device's one day sale to public in the US. The update will be rolled out later this week.

The new software update is based on Android KitKat for Glass and according to Google, brings improved battery life and makes Glass more reliable and easier to update in the future. Following the update, developers will be able to write Glassware or apps for Glass using the latest Android SDK, along with new features from Google's GDK.

The updated software includes Photo bundles that organizes photos, videos and vignettes from each day in bundles so that users swipe less and see more, when they scroll through their timeline. It also brings photo replies in the Glass Hangouts app.

It also sorts voice commands in a better way. Now, when users tap or say "ok glass," voice commands are sorted by recency and frequency, making it easier to see the commands they use most often and faster to access them.

However, the update removes voice calling functionality from Glass. Google says that video calls offered through Glass need improvement and will be reintroduced at a later time when the experience is better. "We hold ourselves to high standards for the features that we build, and video calls aren't living up to these standards. Explorers have told us so directly, and fewer than 10% of them use video calls. For this reason, we've made the hard decision to remove video calls from Glass until the experience is better," said Google in a Google+ post.

Google has also included a way to send feedback through the device info card in the Glass settings.

Meanwhile, starting today, Google will sell the 'Explorer' version of Google Glass to any US resident who places an online order for the device, for just one day. To everyone outside the US, Google has apologized in a post on their Google+ social network with a "Sorry, we're just not ready yet to bring Glass to other countries".

The internet-connected eyewear will still cost $1,500, the same price that Google has charged for it since sales of the device began last year.
