NEW DELHI: WhatsApp has suffered a service disruption, with users facing frequent delays in sending and receiving messages. This comes just a day after the company handled 64 billion incoming and outgoing messages.

On iPhones, most WhatsApp users are unable to send messages as the service keeps trying to connect to the internet for several minutes, before finally sending a message to the recipient.

Android and Windows Phone smartphones, too, are unable to send and receive messages instantly. While the messages are eventually getting sent, the recipients do not get them for several minutes.

Users of the popular messaging app have taken to microblogging platform Twitter to express their frustration with the service disruption.

Just a few hours ago, WhatsApp had tweeted that it handled a total of 64 billion inbound and outbound messages in a day.

WhatsApp has fast replaced text messaging in a number of markets and is the No. 1 instant messaging app in India. Globally, it has over 465 million users. Social networking titan Facebook acquired it for $19 billion last month.
