BlackBerry signs deal with Amazon Appstore

NEW DELHI: It looks like BlackBerry is working on solving the app deficit problem plaguing its BlackBerry 10 devices.

The Canadian giant has announced a licensing agreement for the Amazon Appstore that would allow BlackBerry 10 users to access more than 240,000 Android apps. The company will offer two app stores - BlackBerry World and Amazon Appstore when BlackBerry 10.3, the forthcoming release of its OS is seeded to the public in September-October 2014.

"Making the Amazon Appstore available on BlackBerry 10 devices will help BlackBerry continue to meet two essential needs: greater app availability for our smartphone users and enhanced productivity solutions for enterprises," said BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen. "We've listened to our customers and have taken this important step to deliver on their needs, while executing on our strategy."
BlackBerry and Amazon will also be working with the BlackBerry application developer community to assist them migrate their apps to the Amazon Appstore in preparation for the 10.3 launch. Developers will also get access to Appstore Developer Select, which provides enhanced merchandising, as well as Amazon Coins incentives, the Developer Promotions Console, which enables real-time pricing adjustments and specials, and the popular Free App of the Day program.

BlackBerry says it will unveil a new enterprise application partner program for corporate developers, ISVs and systems integrators, designed to expand the number of enterprise applications that leverage BlackBerry 10 to deliver business-class functionality and enhance users' productivity, communication and collaboration.

In addition to the greater selection of apps, users will also be able to access video and music services through a number of popular third party services available through the Amazon Appstore and BlackBerry World.

It is worth pointing out that BlackBerry 10 users (on BlackBerry OS 10.2.1) can install third-party app stores like Amazon Appstore and 1Mobile Market through their websites and, browser and install Android apps directly through them. However, the deal will allow BlackBerry to bundle Amazon's Appstore on its devices.

While BlackBerry World will continue to offer music and video services via third party apps, it will be closing its music and video download sections on July 21st. Previously downloaded content will be available after that date through MyWorld.
