Gionee warns customers against buying phones on e-commerce sites

NEW DELHI: After the likes of Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell, Chinese smartphone maker Gionee has also issued an advisory warning customers against buying phones from Indian e-commerce portals.

The company has stated that the advisory has been issued in the light of some 'recent instances'. It also elaborated that the company sells phones only through its official website and its distributors.

Interestingly, Gionee has advised consumers to check all warranty and service related details carefully before buying a Gionee phone from the e-commerce websites.

We reached out to Gionee for a clarification on the incidents that led to this advisory. The company's spokesperson informed The Times Of India Tech that it has decided not to honour the warranty for phones purchased from certain websites or sellers as they're selling Gionee's phones without a formal agreement with the company.

Gionee is perhaps taking this action to protect the interest of retailers and distributors who are struggling to keep up with online retailers who offer heavy discounts on products, reducing prices below those offered by physical retailers. For instance, Gionee's new Elife S5.5 is selling at a price as low as Rs 20,999 on Flipkart, while the company had launched the phone at Rs 22,999.

Also, price diminution affects the brand's perceived value.

Elaborating on the advisory, Arvind Vohra, India Head, Gionee Smartphones, said, "Selling at discounted rates is hurting our brand because these e-commerce sites are discounting prices way below other retail outlets. Also, they do not provide any after-sales service which is fundamental to Gionee. If customers face any issues, the e-commerce sites turn them away saying it's a brand issue."

"While there is nothing wrong with selling at competitive prices, it does affect our brand perception and I would like to clarify that Gionee does not have any direct arrangement with any e-commerce portal in India."

"As of now, Gionee sells only through its e-store and registered distributors with its products available across over 20,000 retail stores," he added.

Lenovo and Dell had issued a similar advisory cautioning consumers buying its products from e-commerce companies like Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon.in, earlier this year.
