'Micromax plans to launch wearable devices in India'

Sanjay Kapoor, the newly-appointed chairman of Micromax, says that the company needs a holistic change to transform from a handset-maker to one which satiates the growing appetite for data. Speaking to ET's Anandita Singh Mankotia, the former Airtel India CEO said that Miromax could expand to wearable devices and machine-to-machine products in its next phase of growth. Edited excerpts:

Why did you choose to join Micromax?
After Airtel, I was very clear I did not want only a corporate role and I wanted to create something out of my experience. It is an obvious fact that data is now the new emerging market. I wanted to focus my energies on creating and building a solid platform which would be able to participate and contribute immensely to this growth area. Micromax is very well positioned to be able to play this role. Also the company's moto of "democratising technology" resonates with my thinking and the work I have done in the past, of helping deploy technology at a mass scale to render connectivity to millions of people.

Your immediate plans for the company?
Data is the most potent platform of connectivity now. However, its proliferation is at a very nascent stage. Data growth has to happen over the five pillars of access, storage, analytics, application & content, and finally devices. We at Micromax are going to build all our vision and efforts around these five areas.

So, are we going to see a significant change in terms of people at the organisation?
It is too early to say anything or give you any specific action plans. We are at the cusp of looking at newer markets. We want to go beyond just handsets and such devices to other products such as wearable devices, machine to machine products.

Which newer markets are you referring to?
At present, we are focusing on Russia, our newest foray. We received a great response and once we are settled here will we plan which other markets to enter.

Will Micromax also look at developing a niche line of higher-end sub brands?
No. The company believes in democratising technology and we don't want to operate at a niche level just for a very small customer base.
