Microsoft's Siri rival may come to iOS, Android devices

NEW DELHI: Microsoft is introspecting if it should extend its Cortana voice assistant to Android and iOS platforms or restrict it to Windows Phone for exclusivity.

During a session at the SMX Advanced conference in Seattle, Marcus Ash, a Windows Phone group program manager, said the Redmond giant was looking at scaling it internationally and across different devices. He suggested that the company was trying to figure out if Cortana would be effective even if it didn't have complete access to the device hinting at devices of other platforms. He said that the company wanted the Cortana assistant to be 'pervasive'.

For instance, if a Windows Phone user has access to Cortana on his smartphone, but uses an Android tablet or iPad, the experience won't be as smooth for him as Cortana won't know the activity on his tablet. However, the executive also expressed his doubts on making it cross platform, since it may become a reason to buy into the ecosystem. Microsoft would lose out as Windows Phone won't be the only platform to offer the feature if it makes Cortana cross platform.

Another problem that the Microsoft executives discussed was that they weren't sure if Cortana would be able to integrate as deeply with other platforms as it does with Windows Phone.

At the moment, Cortana is in beta and is available to Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview users with US location settings. It will be rolled out in select markets including US and UK this year, and other markets, next year.

Cortana is powered by Microsoft's Bing search engine and notifies users of phone calls, emails and messages; lets them set appointments and reminders, perform searches and operate the music player etc hands-free. It is also able to track users' online searches as well as new calendar entries and also access third-party apps.

It is a rival to Apple's Siri and Google's Google Now voice assistants. It is worth pointing out that Google Now is available on iOS through the Google Search app but is not tightly integrated due to software limitations.
