First impressions: Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

NEW DELHI: Samsung has launched its new tablet Galaxy Tab S with 8.4- and 10.5-inch versions in the Indian market. The USP of the tablets is their high-resolution Super AMOLED display and powerful hardware, besides the sleek form factor. We spent some time with the 8.4-inch tablet (better of the two) and here are our first impressions...

Build & Design
Galaxy Tab S is a good-looking device. Although it follows the same design language as seen in Samsung Galaxy S5, the tablet looks more premium with its metal frame and subtly rounded corners.

Weighing just 298gram, the tablet is also one of the slimmest devices around at 6.6mm. The 8.4-inch tablet is easy to hold (even with one hand) and lug around and can be easily used for reading and watching movies for long periods.

The back of the tablet features a non-removable, plastic case that sports a dimpled, faux-perforated texture similar to Galaxy S5. To be honest, we are not fans of this design but it may be a nice change from the faux-leather finish for some.

The front is dominated by the 8.4-inch Super AMOLED display. The side bezel is not very large and helps in giving the tablet a compact look. The Home hardware button and capacitive keys for Back and multitasking are located just below it. The Home key also integrates the fingerprint scanner.

This is one area where Samsung has marched ahead of Apple, but it remains to be seen if it has been able to sort out issues with the biometric hardware. The scanner on the Galaxy S5 was not as reliable as the one on the iPhone 5S.

The right edge of the tablet has slots for the sim card and microSD card, in addition to the Infrared port, volume rocker and the Power key. The bottom edge features the micro-USB port and 3.5mm headset jack.

Display
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 sports an 8.4-inch Super AMOLED display (2560x1600p). Samsung claims that the display has a contrast ratio of 100,000:1.

The screen resolution is higher than the iPad mini with Retina display's resolution. The display looks spectacular with vivid, albeit a little over-saturated colours and offers good brightness levels and excellent viewing angles.

Text and graphics looked extremely crisp and sharp. We were not able to test the tablet under sunlight so we won't be able to comment on the under-sun legibility.

Hardware
Samsung Galaxy Tab S is powered by an Exynos 5 Octa processor (1.9GHz quad-core+ 1.3GHz quad-core) and 3GB RAM. It features 16GB internal storage and a microSD card slot that supports cards of up to 128GB.

During our brief hands-on time with the tablet, we did not experience any lag or stutter while navigating through the UI, or launching and switching between apps. Of course, we will need to spend more time with the tablet to comment on hardware performance.

Galaxy Tab S sports an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and a 2.1MP front-facing camera. We tried clicking some pictures at the event and found them to be decent. However, it's worth mentioning that we weren't able to transfer them to a PC.

As we mentioned earlier, the AMOLED display offers slightly over-saturated colours so it is hard to comment on colour reproduction. We will have a detailed camera review when we get our review unit.

In terms of connectivity, the tablets offer Wi-Fi (including 802.11ac), Bluetooth 4.0, Infrared, 3G and voice calling capabilities. Samsung has said that it will soon launch a 4G-LTE version of the tablet with support for Indian 4G bands.

The tablet has a 4,900mAh battery. As per Samsung, Galaxy Tab S consumes less energy than comparative LCD displays because Super AMOLED display technology doesn't require a backlight.

Software
Galaxy Tab S 8.4 runs Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz UI running on top. The tablet offers software features like SideSync 3.0, allowing users to make and receive calls and share content through their Galaxy S5 phones over Wi-Fi direct; a multi-user mode that allows 8 user profiles; and a Kids Mode.

Multiple user profiles is a great feature for households where the device is used by multiple users. However, we are not sure if a large number of users would want to transfer and sync content between their smartphone and tablet. Also, limited support for just Galaxy S5 is an issue and prevents this feature from gaining popularity.

Multitasking is supported through the Multi-window feature and makes the tablet pretty useful.

Samsung is also offering free content bundled with the tablet, including 100 free HD movies, quarterly subscription to 21 Indian magazines, quarterly subscription to Marvel Unlimited service for access to comic books and free books through Kindle for Samsung and Google Play apps.

The tablet will be available at Rs 37,800.
