Airplay Airport Express
If you love your iOS devices, the quickest way to get wireless is to buy an Airplay Airport Express. Just plug it into a power point nearest to your sound receiver or speakers, plug your sound setup into the 3.5mm jack on the Airport Express and your music is now wireless.
Just tap the Airplay icon that shows up on your music streaming app. You can even stream video to another Airplay device. There are a few apps on Android that allow you to connect to Airplay. However, you can only play your local content on it.
HDMI-based dongles, Chromecast, EZCast and MiraCast
If you do happen to have your HDTV plugged into your home theatre or your sound system, may be you can invest in a Chromecast, EZCast or MiraCast DLNA, or some of the other wireless streaming dongles out there. These allow you to stream video as well as audio.
With Chromecast, you can play content on your Android device directly by just tapping the Cast icon in most apps. EZCast and Miracast are a bit cheaper than Google's USB streaming stick, which is not available officially in India.
Such streaming solutions make things a lot more open as these support Airplay and a host of other streaming protocols. The only downside is you need your HDTV as the middleman in this case.
Wireless audio extenders and converters
There are several wireless-based audio solutions available online. The FiiO W1R1 converter, available easily online, converts wireless audio signals to high fidelity audio. Not to mention, like the Airport Express, there are several Wi-Fi routers that have dedicated audio connectors like the D-Link Wi-Fi audio extender.
There is also a nifty device called Beep, only available in limited batches, which connects any speaker in your home to your Wi-Fi setup. Lastly, if you want something state-of-the-art, you can always go for a Sonos system, though it would cost a bomb.
Bluetooth
Not everybody likes the newer breed of speakers, and there are a lot of people who cherish their good old Bose, Kenwood and Telome. Bluetooth to the rescue. There's several options available here.
Cheap adapters with names like Aluratek and Zoook start from Rs 399 and do the job. Just power them with a USB and plug your sound system in and you can stream music easily through Bluetooth, keeping your Wi-Fi free.
If you are an audiophile and want something more, you can invest in the Belkin Bluetooth Audio adapter for about Rs 2,500 or a Logitech Wireless Speaker Adapter for a little above Rs 5,000 to make sure your music makes it across your space in perfect fidelity.
Wireless speakers
Setting up your audio from scratch? Then why not go in for a wireless speaker from the get go. Lots of manufacturers have superb wireless speakers powered by Bluetooth or NFC, ranging from a few thousands to the bigger, badder units above Rs 15,000, like the sweet-looking Sony GTK-N1BT. It all depends on your budget. While Bluetooth speakers, you can get a superb 2.1 output from small players like F&D.
NFC is still expensive, but a lot easier to use, and a lot more convenient to sync than Bluetooth. If you have guests with good music, all they need to do is touch their phones to the speaker to sync, and they can play their own music.
