The Cloud FX smartphone sports a modest form factor based on the Firefox reference design unveiled earlier this year by Mozilla. The phone is compact and is not very heavy. Made of plastic, the phone feels solid and durable, and there were no creaks and wobbles even though it features a removable back cover.
The front features a 3.5-inch TFT display and a capacitive touch Home button. The left edge sports a volume rocker key and a micro-USB port, while the power button sits on top edge along with the 3.5mm headset jack. The keys offer decent tactile feedback.
The back of the phone features a plastic back cover with a textured finish to offer a good grip. The 2MP rear camera and the speaker grill are also at the back.
Removing the cover reveals two regular sim card slots and a microSD card slot. The company bundles a 4GB card with the phone.
For a phone that costs Rs 1,999, the HVGA (320x480p) display looks decent. Viewing angles were not wide and there was some pixillation but compared to feature phones available at this price point, the display is certainly better.
The highlight of the Cloud FX phone is Firefox OS, developed by Mozilla which is known for the Firefox web browser. It is an open-source operating system mainly targeted at users in emerging markets. The OS is optimized for low-end devices.
The user interface resembles iOS and some custom Android interfaces. The phone has a lock-screen and a home screen but there's no app launcher. The app shortcuts are placed on the home screen. The interface also has a notifications tray that can be pulled down from the top. The tray features toggles for settings like Wi-Fi, data, Bluetooth and settings.
Similar to iOS, Firefox OS comes with software back buttons depending on the application. The only other way to exit an app is to just press the Home key. The phone comes preinstalled with an app marketplace, camera, gallery, FM radio, clock, calendar, e-mail, music, video and file manager apps.
The OS launcher also features a universal search powered by Everything.me. It not only offers apps installed on the phone but also offer results from the web. The phone needs constant connectivity to the internet, which could be a downer. We'll have more on the new OS in our full review.
Intex Cloud FX smartphone is powered by a 1GHz Spreadtrum processor and 128MB RAM with 256MB internal storage. While the OS is optimized for low-end hardware, we noticed some lag while browsing web pages and navigating through the home screens. The dual-sim phone boasts of connectivity features such as Bluetooth, Edge, A-GPS and Wi-Fi. It has a 1250mAh battery. It doesn't offer 3G which is not a big deal breaker given the user segment it's targetting.
It sports a 2MP rear camera without LED flash. In our brief use, we noticed some shutter lag and the quality of photos taken with the phone looked average. We'll need to spend more time with the phone to give a final verdict.
