In case you haven't guessed Phoenix Wright is an ace attorney, and for those who have followed the series, also on iOS, Mr. Wright's path has not been an easy one. Always straddled with the toughest cases, with no hope of winning and with the weirdest of witnesses and the toughest of opponents to battle. However, like his name Phoenix Wright has always risen up from the ashes, providing turnabout victories all with your amazing investigation and detective work. Now, Phoenix is back on the scene after a long hiatus and things are really bad. Joining him this time is Apollo Justice and Athena Cykes, his partners at Wright Anything Agency.
It's a dark time for justice, in Phoenix's absence the legal system has been diseased with fabricated evidence and false charges. It's up to Phoenix, who has just taken the bar again to get his badge, Apollo, who has lost a close friend and Athena, a new attorney, to wade through the murky grey area, find the truth and solve six mysteries and fight six cases. Thankfully you have some special powers to aid you. Phoenix Wright has the ability to see Psyche-Locks around people on the stand, with the aid of a special magic gem called a magatama. All you have to do is press the witness with the right questions to unlock the truth. Apollo Justice has a bracelet that let's him slow time and see miniscule movements and nervous ticks in people's demeanor on the stand. In other words, he can see through a straight face. Athena uses a mood matrix, which is sort of a small computer that detects changes in mood of the witness, so see which questions may make the witness angry or sad, even if they're good at hiding it.
While the legal system has gone dark, the game hasn't. It still retains that wonderful sense of humour with truly creative writing, some devious cases and puzzles for you to investigate and solve. Each case is so well structured, presented and played out, you actually end up at the edge of your seat pondering how you should press your witness. You will spend days, lunch breaks, nights figuring out crime scenes and speaking to potential witnesses and grilling perps on the stand. Fighting against some of the top notch prosecutors in the business. Not to mention you will see some familiar faces of people from the previous series, or their relatives.
If the premise of playing a lawyer may put you off, give this a shot. You will be pleasantly surprised how much fun you will actually have. Where fighting the case is like the boss fight, before that you have to thoroughly search for clues, leaving no stone unturned. Whatever you find, you will have to present in evidence in court. Slowly as you go along, piecing together the truth as a defender, you have the opposing prosecutor working equally hard at disproving you. There's always something going on, never letting you get bored for even a minute. This game will make you use your brain without you even knowing you are, you'll either be laughing out loud or sweating buckets during trial.
Dual Destinies originally came out as a Nintendo 3DS title, a game always faithful to Nintendo's handhelds. Though, this time around Capcom made sure to make a flawless iOS port. So you have well thought out touch controls, lovely HD animations that take advantage of your retina display. A lot of the game is traditionally hand drawn and animated, with comical to tragic to the lovely all well presented in stunning drawings. Even though they're just static drawings, each character comes to life with animated gestures. It's so much fun poking and prodding people on the stand, until they have a spectacular meltdown. Mostly after Phoenix Wright has his signature "Objection" moment.
Go ahead, give this a whirl. After all, the first case is free, the subsequent ones you have to pay Rs. 300 for each or buy all for about Rs. 920. You will not be disappointed. Ace Attorney is highly recommended, and if you liked this game, the full Ace Attorney trilogy is out on the App Store too, as well as Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
