According to a new report by Cult Of Mac, Apple has confirmed that it will not offer developers access to the iPhone's NFC hardware. Apple will also not market the NFC as a separate feature and will instead focus on promoting Apple Pay.
This means that you'll not be able to use the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with NFC-enabled accessories such as speakers, use NFC tags for actions or share files with other phones. It doesn't sound unfamiliar as Apple has also restricted Bluetooth connectivity on the iPhone restricting file transfers to other devices. Apple had also restricted its finger print recognition hardware and had not opened it to developers until iOS 8.
According to another report by PC Advisor the NFC hardware from NXP is capable of additional tasks but the iOS 8 doesn't offer access to developers to use the features. It is also possible that Apple may restrict access to select partners or open access after the Apple Watch launch. Apple had showcased certain use cases during the Apple Watch demo at its recent launch event.
Apple may also open NFC hardware to developers, next year, just like it extended access to Touch ID, an year after its launch.
