This means that nearly 8.5% of Twitter users could be robots who never use the service, ValueWalk reported.
The document pointed to mobile applications that the users connect "with no discernible user action involved."
"There are a number of false or spam accounts in existence on our platform. We estimate that false or spam accounts represent less than 5% of our Monthly Active Users (MAUs)," the SEC document read.
"However, this estimate is based on an internal review of a sample of accounts and we apply significant judgement in making this determination," it added.
Twitter's SEC documents show that out of their 284 million users, 24 million are apps or pieces of software connecting to the platform.
"Over 11% of all Twitter users connect to the application through third-party software such as Tweetdeck or Hootsuite, potentially Twitter's most active users. Within this 11.5% is the 8.5% that doesn't do anything," the report noted.
