Google on January 11 had made a Windows 8.1 bug public on January 11, 2015 as part of its Project Zero. This project is aimed at compelling software makers to improve upon the response time to software flaws and make the web and computers more secure to use. Google gives such software companies a lead time of 90 days before making the flaws public.
The internet search giant had informed Microsoft of the bug on October 11, 2014, thus giving Microsoft time till January 11, 2015 to release a patch to fix the issue. However, Chris Betz, the chief of Microsoft Security Response Center, in a blog post said that the company asked Google to hold off the revealing the flaw for two more days as it needed a couple of more days to develop a fix.
"Releasing information absent context or a stated path to further protections, unduly pressures an already complicated technical environment. It is necessary to fully assess the potential vulnerability, design and evaluate against the broader threat landscape, and issue a "fix" before it is disclosed to the public, including those who would use the vulnerability to orchestrate an attack," Betz wrote in the post.
He added, "Specifically, we asked Google to work with us to protect customers by withholding details until Tuesday, January 13, when we will be releasing a fix."
Betz also said that revealing the flaw is consistent with Google's Project Zero guidelines, but also undermines the security of Windows 8.1 customers' devices.
He slammed Google's decision to reveal the software issue by writing, "The decision feels less like principles and more like a "gotcha", with customers the ones who may suffer as a result. What's right for Google is not always right for customers. We urge Google to make protection of customers our collective primary goal."
The technical community, well versed with the complexity of developing patches of such bugs, is divided. While some sided with Google by calling Microsoft a lumbering giant that did not fix the bug in time, others supported Microsoft by explaining that it takes time to test all the code so that no other process gets broken by the patch.
