Sony Xperia Z4 to come in two versions: Report

NEW DELHI: Japanese manufacturer Sony did not unveil the oft-rumoured Xperia Z4 smartphone at the CES 2015 tech expo, breaking away from a two-year tradition. Nevertheless, the top-end smartphone is still on its way, and it seems that the model will come in more than one iterations.

According to a report by Taiwanese technology website ePrice, Sony is readying two versions of Xperia Z4, one featuring a Full HD (1080x1920p) display and the other a 2K (1440x2560p) panel.

2K, also called QHD, screens are the latest high when it comes to the smartphone displays, with only a handful of smartphones globally featuring the high-resolution panel. In India, only Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Oppo Find 7 and LG G3 sport 2K screens. On the other hand, smartphones with Full HD screens are now available for Rs 20,000.

The 2K variant of Sony Xperia Z4 will be sold in the US market; it is not yet known if other countries will also get this model. The report also says that in some countries, only the Full HD iteration will be available, which may mean that the two models may be sold alongside each other in some markets.

The ePrice report also says that the front-facing camera has received a major upgrade over that of Xperia Z3's. This may mean that Sony will add a high-resolution camera in front, and complement it with selfie-focussed software.

Sony has also improved upon the water-resistance with Xperia Z4, the report adds. The smartphone's USB port would not be covered by a flap to protect it from water damage, which means that the company would probably use a long-lasting nano coating to protect it.

According to earlier reports, Sony Xperia Z4 will sport a 5.5-inch screen and will be powered by 2.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 CPU, designed on 64-bit chipset architecture. It is also said to have 4GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.

The camera is said to be have the same resolution (20.7MP) as Xperia Z3, with an upgrade in the sensor from IMX220 to a curved Exmor RS CMOS. Xperia Z4 will be the first Sony smartphone to have LTE Cat.6 connectivity and Bluetooth 4.1.
