Apple’s Siri will soon recognize Indian English

NEW DELHI: Apple's Siri may have been the first truly interactive smartphone voice assistant but it has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to understanding the English spoken with an accent that Indians use. In fact, Google Now, which was launched later recognizes the accent in a much better way. All that is about to change judging by the latest iOS 8.3 beta release.

According to 9to5mac, the second beta of iOS 8.3 seeded to developers adds Siri support for English for India. This means that Siri will be able to understand voice commands spoken in English spoken with an Indian accent.

It will also allow users to use the dictation feature to dictate emails or write-ups without the need to fake an American or British accent.

As per the report, new options are accessible via the Siri settings menu on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 8.3 is expected to release later this year but it will also be open for public testing in March via a public beta.

In addition to English for India, iOS 8.3 adds support for Russian, Danish, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Thai and Turkish.

Unfortunately, there are no signs of Hindi support coming to Siri. Google, on the other hand, had introduced Hindi voice search, last year and had demonstrated the capability at the launch of the Indian Language Internet Alliance.
