Earlier, when a new user signed up for Twitter (after choosing a handle and a password), tweets appeared only after following accounts of other users and organizations.
Now, even though the initial process remains the same, users signing up on Twitter will see tweets related to their interests even if they don't follow individual accounts. The users will also be recommended accounts based on their phone's address book when they sign-up via a smartphone, as per a report by The New York Times.
Twitter will use information like who the user's contacts are and who they follow on Twitter to guess which accounts and topics could interest them.
This implies that if a user's friend is following fashion related accounts, the user may also get to see similar tweets on his timeline.
The downside to it is that it is not always necessary that a user and the people he/she follows will have common interests, so there will be tweets on the timeline that don't interest the user.
As per the report, instant timeline would also nudge users with frequent reminders urging them to follow people and tutorials at to explain Twitter features like direct messaging.
The feature has been made available to a small number of users who signed up via the official Android app, last week.
Twitter aims to solve the problem of slow new user growth with this feature.
