Some 20,000 taxis provide traffic information to Traffline, a free mobile application that provides traffic congestion information.
"We are basically trying to understand what local governments actually need. If there is any solution we can work with them on, we will 100% make information available for local and national governments that can put data into action," said Gagan Bhatia, Uber's general manager in Delhi. The Uber-Safetipin partnership will be piloted in Delhi in the coming months, and will be rolled out to Nairobi, Kenya; and Bogota, Colombia later this year.
According to Bhatia, the company intends to bring the initiative to other Indian cities and markets across the world that are perceived to be unsafe for women. Uber also announced a partnership with the Boston city government this January to deliver anonymized trip-level data to improve traffic flow, such as how to time stoplights and where to add additional metro stops.
"If people and the government can look at the data, it can be used for planning and implementing infrastructure," said Brijraj Vaghani, director of Traffline, which regularly publishes reports on transportation-related data on its online blog. The company raised Series A funding from Qualcomm Ventures last year, and counts aggregator TaxiForSure, recently acquired by Ola, as a past contributor.
"Location data is the core of everything we do at Ola," said Vijayaraghavan Amirisetty, director of engineering at Ola. The aggregator says it collects a million data points every minute through mobile and GPS devices fitted on vehicles attached to the company. While SoftBank-funded Ola currently uses its wealth of location data for its core business functions, such as determining vehicle supply and demand, the company has plans to make use of it for the public sector.
