The iPhone 5 has been marred with complaints about scratched and chipped bodies straight out of the box. This has been attributed to the anodised aluminium used in manufacturing the device, which makes it susceptible to damages despite making it lighter.
Bloomberg in a report recently stated: "Senior Apple managers told executives at Foxconn near the end of September to tighten production standards, said the person, who asked not to be named because the matter was private."
The report further talks of workers who themselves say that each step in the iPhone 5 manufacturing process is fraught with instances of scratching the metal surface. This has decreased the number of devices that met Apple's new standards, thus choking the supply chain and resulting in fewer iPhone 5s reaching the customers.
Bloomberg's report points out that the same type of aluminium is also used in manufacturing Apple's notebooks as its latest phones, however, there have been no complaints about notbooks'body getting chipped. The report says: "The clash between quality and quantity in iPhone 5 output is felt acutely at Foxconn Technology, the major producer of the housings made out of what Apple calls 'anodised 6000 series aluminum,' the same material used in its notebooks."
