NEW DELHI: Google today released an updated version of the Maps app for Android, which was announced at the I/O 2013 developer conference. While this update gave several new features and improvements to Android devices, it also meant the end of its niche service, Latitude.

Google Latitude is a location-based service that enables users to share where they are at as well as track their friends' movements online. A post on Google Support page says that the service will be retired on August 9, 2013 and will not be accessible from applications like Google Maps app and website, Latitude for iPhone app, Latitude API, public badge and iGoogle gadget.

While the niche service is being retired, its check-in feature has been added to Google+, the internet giant's social network. While users' Latitude Friends lists will be deleted by Google, they can access their past data via the service's dashboard. However, users will not be able to export their private location data. In case their location reporting option is turned off, then the data will be automatically deleted.

Location history feature will still be available for Android users, but not for iOS. Third party apps will be allowed to store Latitude data they have already accessed, says Google.

The internet titan recently received a severe public backlash for discontinuing its Google Reader.
