The Taiwan-based device manufacturer has postponed plans to sell Transformer Book Duet TD300 hybrid, which was expected to launch in the second half of the year. Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, Transformer Book Duet TD300 transforms from a tablet to a laptop and also switch from Android to Windows 8.1 with the simple push of a button.
The news of Asus cancelling the product was first reported by Digitimes. The report said that the device was cancelled due to pressure from Google.
The WSJ report also says that Asus will stop selling other dual-OS devices including Asus Transformer AiO P1801 and P1802 all-in-one PCs, launched last year, due to Microsoft's "new policy" of not supporting dual OS products. The report cites an internal memo circulated by Asustek to its employees.
Chip giant Intel too has been betting big on dual-OS devices to spur interest in PCs amid falling sales as well as gain a foothold in tablets. In fact, Transformer Book Duet TD300 was showcased by Intel CEO Brian Krzanich during his keynote at the CES.
The dual-OS devices come with the prospect of running full-fledged Windows programmes as well as Android apps on one device. Asus allowed users to switch between the two with the press of a button.
While both Microsoft and Google have not commented on the matter, it looks like the two software giants don't like the idea of dual-boot tablets and hybrids. Ironically, this comes at a time when Huawei and Indian phone maker Karbonn have revealed plans to offer dual-boot smartphones that run Windows Phone and Android.
