NEW DELHI: Work commitments forced Google's India-born chief business officer Nikesh Arora to step down from the board of the country's largest private telecom operator, Bharti Airtel.

"This is to confirm that Nikesh Arora, senior VP and chief business officer, Google, will be stepping down from the board of Bharti Airtel due to his other work commitments," a Google spokesperson told PTI.

Arora was replaced by Dinesh Kumar Mittal, who retired in 2013 as Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.

Arora served as an independent director with Airtel for five-and-a-half years.

"It was an incredible privilege to be associated with a brand like Airtel in its journey of growth and also be a part of India's telecom revolution," Arora said.

He thanked Bharti Group chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal for giving him the "opportunity to participate and contribute in the company's evolution."

"We have deep appreciation for Nikesh's valuable contributions at critical times in the life of the company. We would be looking forward to his participation in the April farewell where I would personally like to acknowledge his very special contributions and support in moving the second-generation agenda of the company forward," Mittal said.
