HTC hires former Samsung exec who made Galaxy ‘the next big thing’

NEW DELHI: Facing brickbats for its flawed marketing effort, HTC appears eager to take some corrective measures. The Taiwanese giant has reportedly hired Paul Golden, the former head of marketing at Samsung's US mobile phone business unit, as an adviser to Cher Wang, the company's CEO.

According to Golden's LinkedIn profile, he worked with Samsung from 2008 to 2012 during which time he "created and launched the highly successful Galaxy brand for Samsung," These are also the years when the South Korean giant rose to prominence globally riding on the success of its Galaxy brand.

Golden's current employer is listed as Brand Slam, a marketing consultancy. Previously, he has also worked with Qwest Communications.

Golden has been hired as a contractor at HTC, according to Bloomberg which cites two unnamed people familiar with the matter as source.

As per the report, Golden's long-term role at HTC hasn't been finalized and he has been initially hired on a three-month contract.

HTC did not confirm the move to Bloomberg but e-mailed a boilerplate response saying, "HTC continues to invest in talent and recruitment as part of our broader human resources strategy."

In a recent interview, HTC chairwoman Cher Wang admitted that the company needed to do a better job when it comes to marketing its smartphones. "The most important thing is communication, and we didn't communicate with our end users well last year," said Wang. "We're going to do it better this year."
