Reliance Jio to roll out 4G services soon: Mukesh Ambani

Reliance Industries has "accelerated efforts to rollout state-of-the-art 4G services across the country," its chairman & managing director Mukesh Ambani said in a media statement Friday.

Its telecom unit, Reliance Jio Infocomm "has finalised key vendor and supplier partnerships and is making rapid progress in building critical infrastructure needed to launch services," the conglomerate said while reporting January-March quarter results.

Jio has lately been on a hiring spree and its "national employee count has galloped to over 3,000 from under 700 last year. "The key leadership positions to execute the (4G) project are in place, the company added.

It is building futuristic broadband infrastructure to handle the huge demand for data and voice using 'long term evolution' or LTE — a technology standard for offering high-speed broadband services, popularly known as 4G.

Jio acquired pan-India airwaves in the 2300 MHz band four years ago but is yet to roll out services. It is reportedly slated to launch services by September 2014, ahead of the May 2015 deadline under licence conditions.

In February, it bought more airwaves in the 1800 MHz band in 14 regions in a government-run auction. Accordingly, it now owns spectrum in the 2300 MHz and 1800 MHz bands and plans to use this airwaves mix to offer both broadband and voice services.

It recently urged DoT to expedite the issue of letters of intent (LoIs) in the 14 regions where it won airwaves in February to speed up its 4G rollout.

Last month, it had inked tower-sharing pact with Viom Networks and Bharti Infratel, the telecom tower unit of Bharti AirtelBSE 0.56 %. Both deals will help it to roll out its much-awaited high speed data and voice services faster and at a lower cost across India. Last year, it had announced an infrastructure sharing deal with Reliance Communications, owned by brother Anil Ambani.

Jio has also won a Facility-Based Operator (FBO) permit in Singapore that enables it to buy, operate and sell undersea and/or terrestrial fibre connectivity and set up its internet point of presence in Singapore. The licence also allows Jio to offer internet transit and peering services as well as data and voice roaming services.

Reliance Jio is reportedly mulling services like live TV (Jio Play), video-on-demand (Jio World), Cloud-based sync and storage (Jio Drive), and video calls over 4G network and other apps.
