Windows 8 Start Menu delayed: Report

NEW DELHI: Some bad news for Windows 8.1 users who've been waiting for a new Start Menu that Microsoft demonstrated during Build 2014 developer conference in April.

According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, the Start Menu will not arrive until Threshold, the next 'major' release of Windows which is expected to release in April 2015. The report cites sources with 'good track records on Windows information.'

The reason for the delay is not clear. The new Start Menu was expected to be part of Windows 8.1 Update 2 which is slated to release in August 2013. The Start Menu that Microsoft demonstrated looked a bit different from the menu that was part of Windows 7, Vista and XP, and also featured shortcuts for Modern UI apps.

In addition to the Start Menu, Microsoft had also showcased windowed mode for Modern UI apps. However, the ZDNet report indicates even that functionality won't be part of Windows 8.1 Update 2. The features are part of Microsoft's efforts to make Windows 8 more palatable for users who're not comfortable with the operating system's radical redesign.
