Just bought a shiny new phone? Don't be in a rush to give away or sell your old Android phone, as it can be used for a whole lot of things now that it's not your primary phone anymore. So, check out 10 ways you can give your old Android phone a new lease of life.

1. A time lapse camera

Time Lapse is a mesmerizing photo technique that compresses large amounts of time into shorter sequences. You can show time moving much faster than usual -- so you can make a video of a sunset that lasts just a few seconds or show the progression of an entire day in a minute or two.
Just get an app called Lapse It and a tripod mount for your phone and start capturing Time Lapse videos.

The phone should be plugged into a power source and kept untouched for the duration of the time lapse.

2. For desktop control

Your Android device can be used as a wireless controller for your desktop -- they need to be connected to the same network and you can get Roccat's Power Grid (one of the best free apps we've seen) to get started.

You'll need the app and the host software for your Windows PC.

3. Digital halloween costume

This can make for a creepy and unique costume. Digital Dudz makes special T-shirts with scary face graphics -- the faces have holes where the eyes are and you're supposed to place your phone into a special pocket in the T-shirt. Get the free app and the eyes on the graphic will be animated, thanks to your phone's screen.

The Velcro pocket inside the T-shirt is compatible with a variety of phones. As for the T-shirts themselves, you can buy them online and get them shipped for about $30 apiece.

4. Bitcoin mining

Bitcoin is virtual currency that can be either purchased or mined. Mining bitcoins requires complex calculations from your device and that is why it is recommended to use powerful computers. However, you can also mine bitcoins on your Android device.

Free apps like Easy Miner and LTC Miner use your phone to calculate algorithms and earn bitcoins. You should know that it will probably take a few days before you even earn a single Bitcoin.

5. As a Kid-Safe Toy

An older phone can be a great educational tool for a young child. All you need to do is load up a 'kid zone' app like Zoodles, Kidoz or Kid's Shell.

You can choose exactly what your child will have access to and password protection ensures that he/she will not be able to use the other functions of the phone.

6. Media Player

Feburary 07, 2015

Many phones are capable of HD video playback and HDMI output. You'll need the MHL-HDMI cable and preferably a media player like MX Player (compatible with different formats).

On the TV, the display is shown in full HD resolution -- play the media file on the app and you can view it on the connected television.

7. Wireless media streaming

Feburary 07, 2015

If you have one of the newer internet-connected smartTVs, chances are that it is DLNA compatible. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) allows you to stream content between different multimedia devices.

You can use a free app to stream content using DLNA technology -- just make sure that the TV and your smartphone/tablet are connected to the same network. Try Apps like PlayTo and Skifta to enable DLNA.

8. Efficient download machine

Feburary 07, 2015

Instead of having a desktop to download torrents, you can be more efficient and use an old smartphone. Plug in a microSD card for storage and connect the phone to power.

Install the free uTorrent app and you're good to start downloading torrent and magnet files. uTorrent for Android has most of the features you'll find in the desktop client.

9. As a vehicle aid

Feburary 07, 2015

Using the free Ulysse Speedometer app, a spare smartphone can be turned into a powerful car trip computer. You can record GPS data of your travel along with details regarding speed, direction, time and acceleration time. You can also set speed limit warning so that the app can notify when you are over speeding.

To see more, you can tap into your car's computer using the OBD II (on-board diagnostics) port. Install DashCommand & get PLX Devices' Kiwi 2 ($70 to 130). The Kiwi 2 will pull real-time information about your car from the OBD II port and display it on your smartphone.

10. A spare skype client

Feburary 07, 2015

With the free Skype app, you can use your old smartphone as an always-on Skype client. Set up Skype, connect to Wi-Fi and mount it somewhere in the room -- you don't even need to have an active sim card in the phone.

If available, you can output to a larger display via HDMI while still using the front camera of the Android.
