Noida-based smartphone vendor Lava International is introducing its highly customised Android-based operating system called Hive through its upcoming smartphone Xolo Play 8X-1000, taking a leaf out of Chinese vendor Xiaomi's book.

Xiaomi, the world's fifth largest smartphone maker, uses Android-based MIUI operating system in its smartphones. The company also offers its own app-based services and content through the operating system.

"Lava has developed the entire custom ROM (Android-based operating system) and UI (user interface) by itself. We will be going out in a Xiaomi kind of direction. Xiaomi has a custom ROM and they try to push a lot of content and they try to keep their users more engaged," SN Rai, cofounder of Lava international told ET.

The company aims to increase its market share to 10% from 6% at present, Rai said, without disclosing the time frame.

Lava also plans to develop applications and content around the Hive operating system to build an ecosystem. Alongside, it aims to monetise the platform by pushing services and content to consumers.

Asked if Lava was also working with Google for the Android One project, Rai replied in the negative but said the Hive platform would do for Lava what Android One would do for Google. "With Android One, Google is trying to control the user experience. They will have the actual advantage with consumer behaviour insights. Under the Android One project, Google is not allowing smartphone players to change anything. Just a few customisations can be done at the skin level," he said.

Lava is also looking to provide Hive platform to other smartphone makers under licensing, he said. Lava plans to launch eight to 10 new smartphones along with a Qualcommbased tablet by the end of this fiscal.

Lava, under its Xolo brand, has already rolled out its 4G LTE-enabled smartphone in the country.

Xiaomi Mi 3 vs Asus Zenfone 5 vs Huawei Honor 3C

Indian smartphone market has recently witnessed some hot launches in the 5-inch category. Here's comparing three new 5-inchers priced under Rs 15,000 — Xiaomi Mi 3, Asus Zenfone 5 and Huawei Honor 3C.

Xiaomi Mi 3
The 8.1mm-slim Mi 3 handset boasts of toughened Gorilla Glass and an aluminium magnesium alloy frame that's coated with three layers of thermal graphite to make it look and feel far more premium than its asking price.

Now, if this handset has been making headlines, it's because of its quality hardware that's capable of serious graphic processing that, hitherto, was only seen in devices costing thrice as much. Full HD movies and 3D games are rendered wonderfully; displayed crisply and with vibrant colours on its Full HD screen; and multi-tasking is handled effortlessly. A special mention should be made of the handset's Miui user interface that's light on the system, intuitive to use, and highly customizable using its proprietary Theme app.

On the downside, the sound quality here is not the best we've experienced. Music playback — though clear — seemed softer than all other phones in this review, while calls lacked clarity at times, but this is not a deal breaker.

For the click-happy, the Mi 3 comes with a 13MP main shooter with dual flash and a 2MP front camera. The former is quick to focus, though the resultant output lacks detail when zoomed into. Still, the photos and videos shot with the Mi 3 are good for sharing on the web, and to use with apps. Notably, the front cam comes with a filter that softens selfies to create blemish-less complexions.

All in all, the Mi 3 is a package that's miles ahead of the competition. It comes with preloaded apps such as a call recorder, an office suite, FM radio, and even cloud storage.

You get a device that's equipped with NFC, and which can also create a strong wireless hotspot. Additionally, in tests, its battery gave us six hours of Full HD movie playback, and lasts for nearly two days with normal usage.

Asus Zenfone 5
The Zenfone 5 is mostly an all-plastic affair, although the build quality is top-notch, complete with Gorilla Glass and a fine radial, metallic texture on the buttons and the bottom edge of the phone; its gently curved back gives it greater grip and feels natural to hold.

Most notably, its dual-core Intel processor rises well to the challenge of heavy multitasking, HD movies and gaming. Additionally, Asus' custom interface adds nice touches to the user experience — be it in the area of managing SIMs, changing audio output to suit your preferences, recording calls, etc.

If you are the creative sort, you will like the Zenfone's camera UI, which includes presets that let you take low-light shots, pictures where everyone is smiling, create GIF animations and more. Results are decent, but tend to get really noisy in low light.

The handset's audio playback is commendable, with its ability to output discernable bass and clear vocals. But like in the case of the Mi 3, call quality wasn't quite up to the mark.

Sadly, its battery life of just six hours proved to be its weakness. But for this drawback, the Zenfone manages to deliver value for money .

Huawei Honor 3C
The Honor 3C — with its glossy white plastic finish — doesn't look slick. Still, its thinner bezel results in a slightly tighter form factor, making it easier to handle as well as carry in the shirt pocket. It is fronted by a quality HD display that offers excellent contrast, richer colours and deep blacks. Sadly, it is not scratch-resistant.

The Honor 3C — powered by a quad-core processor, and coupled with great touchscreen response and a proprietary user interface (Emotion 2.0) — works flawlessly for most productivity tasks, and is better in certain areas like the notification centre and single-handed use than the Asus ZenUI.

There are very few pre-loaded apps on this device; utilities like a flashlight, voice recorder, phone manager, and KingSoft Office for productivity is all you will find on the Honor 3C.

But the mainstay of this smartphone is its call quality, which is the best when compared with all the sub-15k phones in this review. Audio output, however, lacks bass punch.

Its 8MP and 5MP cameras are quick to focus and take some commendable shots and videos with fair amount of detail.

As far as battery life is concerned, you can get a full day's use — phone calls, web browsing, e-mails and gaming — on a single charge.

'iPhone slow': Do Apple's smartphones get slower when a new one is launched?

'Planned obsolescence' or purposefully designing something to break after a set period of time is a dirty phrase in the tech industry, but there's one group of gadget-obsessives who absolutely love it: Apple conspiracy theorists.

'How is it,' asks the suspicious consumer, 'that whenever there's a new iPhone coming out, my old one suddenly seems to get slower? Is it just me or does this look a little too convenient for Apple to be coincidental?'

Well, one thing for sure, is that it's not just the paranoid who think this. A new study by Harvard economics student Laura Trucco and published in the New York Times has attempted to answer this question by looking at the number of people searching 'iPhone slow' (a sure-fire indicator that their smartphone's processing power is on their mind) and how it changes over time.

Trucco found that sure enough, whenever a new iPhone is released searches for the phrase rocket upwards while similar searches tuned to Android devices (example 'Samsung Galaxy slow') do not correlate at all with the launch of new devices, and simply trend upwards over the years as manufacturers sell more devices.

Sendhil Mullainathan, a professor of economics at Harvard and Trucco's teacher, suggests that this data could have been influenced by expectations (if Apple are telling you how whizzy fast their new iPhone is your current one is bound to feel slower) but that there is also another possible cause.

"In the benign explanation," writes Dr Mullainathan, "a slowdown of old phones is not a specific goal, but merely a side effect of optimizing the operating system for newer hardware."

By this he means that when Apple releases a new iPhone they also tend to launch an update to their mobile operating system — one that is designed to take advantage of all the new hardware, but that doesn't play quite so smoothly with older devices.

This suggestion is then that when Apple push out an update to iOS they inadvertently hobble anything that isn't their latest device, with the spike in searches attributed to the fact that Apple is very good at encouraging people to update their software (something that is incredibly beneficial to the company in selling a consistent user experience to customers and developers alike).

The same software-slowdown might happen on Android devices (the study doesn't cover this) but because big companies like Samsung only control the hardware and not the software, they're less effective at getting customers to upgrade simultaneously — explaining why there is no parallel spike for 'Samsung Galaxy slow'.

It's a hell of a theory, but it does it prove that the Apple conspiracy theorists are right? As Dr Mullainathan says, "This data reveals only correlations, not conclusions." We'll leave you to drawn those on your own.

Security flaw that puts 90% smartphones at risk discovered

VIENNA: Security researchers have revealed two separate threats this week they say could put up to 90% of the world's 2 billion-plus smartphones at risk of password theft, stolen data and in some cases let hackers take full control of devices.

One vulnerability involves flaws in the way scores of manufacturers of Apple, Google Android and Blackberry devices, among others, have implemented an obscure industry standard that controls how everything from network connections to user identities are managed.

The threat could enable attackers to remotely wipe devices, install malicious software, access data and run applications on smartphones, Mathew Solnik, a mobile researcher with Denver-based cyber security firm Accuvant, said in a phone interview.

A separate threat specifically affecting up to three-quarters of devices running older Android software has been unearthed by researchers at Bluebox Security of San Francisco. Dubbed "Fake ID", the vulnerability allows malicious applications to trick trusted software from Adobe, Google and others on Android devices without any user notification, the company said on Wednesday.

"Essentially anything that relies on verified signature chains of an Android application is undermined by this vulnerability," Bluebox said in a statement referring to devices built before Google updated its core software late last year.

These risks could not be independently verified by Reuters.

Solnik stressed that the threat to smartphone management software identified by Accuvant remained remote to average users and said that only a few dozen mobile communications experts in the world would currently be able to replicate the technique. But by publicizing the risks, his company hopes to avert this becoming a danger on a global scale.

Fixing flaws
The global smartphone industry has been scrambling for the past few years to respond to an increasing number of vulnerabilities uncovered in mobile technology.

Both research groups will present their findings at next week's Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas, which is highlighting research on mobile technology, among other themes.

An Apple spokesmen declined immediate comment.

Blackberry said it was aware of Accuvant's findings and was seeking more details.

"BlackBerry has been working closely with Accuvant. Internal and external security researchers serve a critical role in improving industry security standards," a spokeswoman said.

A Google spokesperson declined to comment on the general vulnerability raised by Accuvant about many smartphone devices. He confirmed that Google had quickly distributed a patch to Android phone makers on learning of the issue from Bluebox.

In general, Android's open software development process encourages individuals and security firms to report security issues, allowing the company to push patches to manufacturers, which in turn must implement the fixes.

The spokesperson said it has scanned all apps in Google Play, Android's application market place, and elsewhere and have found no risks to users. "We have seen no evidence of attempted exploitation of this vulnerability," he said.

Christina Richmond, a security services analyst with research firm IDC said detecting these vulnerabilities is positive in that the phone industry has a chance to act on these findings before they can be exploited by bad actors.

"These security threats have become everyday issues for billions of smartphone users worldwide," she said. "Mr and Mrs end user needs to understand the risk of not updating their phone's software."

The disclosures come as market share statistics released by mobile research firm Strategy Analytics show Android capturing a dominant 85% share of smartphones shipped worldwide in the second quarter. All major rivals from Apple iOS to Microsoft to Blackberry lost market share.

Security researchers say Android's rapid growth and dominant market share has come with an Achilles heel.

Until late last year, successive versions of Android were distinct creatures, making it hard, if not impossible for developers to update products for each software release, and meaning most Android security features could not be back-dated.

The "Fake ID" vulnerability is widespread in Android phones dating back to the January 2010 release of Android 2.1 software and affects all devices not patched by Google, Bluebox said.

NEW DELHI: Internet giant Google is the most attractive employer for graduates from the Asia-Pacific region in a list of top companies which figures no Indian company.

According to global employer branding firm Universum's 2014 Most Attractive Employers in Asia-Pacific Ranking, Google has emerged as the most desirable employer among business, as well as engineering and IT students in the APAC region.

Google is followed by Deloitte, Citi, Apple and P&G in the top-five firms for business students. Among engineering and IT students, Google is followed by Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and BMW.

The list has 50 companies each for the two categories, but no India company figures in either of the lists, although a number of these companies have significant headcount in India.

Interestingly, the latest Fortune Global 500 list has eight Indian companies including state-run IOC which was featured in the top 100 at the 96th position.

Besides, Deloitte, the other three major accounting firms were also placed among the Top 10. KPMG was ranked sixth, PwC seventh and Ernst & Young eighth.

The popularity of banks and professional service firms among APAC graduates were also visible in the rankings as these firms took 11 of the top 20 employer positions.

The FMCG sector also had significant presence in the list as the four key players featured include P&G ranked fifth, Unilever 14th, Nestle 16th and the L'Oreal Group 20th.

While Google continues to dominate the rankings as the top employer for engineering/IT students, Samsung is a close competitor in Asia-Pacific.

On the other hand, former communications and IT giant, Nokia, continues to fall in the rankings at 32nd place this year.
