SAP's maiden India product to go global

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 08 Agustus 2014 | 21.43

SAP Labs India is about to take its first India-made product to the global market. Code-named Project Genomics, the software offers visual analytics, data transformation pipelines and clinical applications for genome research.

SAP worked closely with Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Centre to build the product from its newly-created products lab called SAP AppHaus in Bangalore. "The aim of AppHaus is to take ideas from the mind to the market in a short period of time, specifically 90 days," said Ganapathy Subramanian, vice president at SAP Labs India.

SAP is talking to several customers in Asia to launch the product, which uses SAP's high-speed data base HANA.

The project has allowed Tata Memorial Centre to check the whole cancer genome in an interactive manner, said principal investigator Amit Dutt.

"Despite large-scale DNA sequencing of the cancer genome there's no dedicated informatics tool to simultaneously load up all the genetic alterations to form a global view understanding of the higher order," he said.

"This (SAP tool) will allow cancer researchers (with and without advanced computational skills) to analyse large data sets in an interactive mode at resolutions not possible before."

As part of Project Genome, SAP is building a single window interface of various known disease markers.

The solution will help cancer biologists to navigate through the data and discover relationships in the data that were not obvious from the original individual sources, such as similarity between biomarker profiles of two different diseases, or similarity between the target profiles of two different drugs.

SAP Labs India is working on multiple other products with different customers and plans to take some of them global as well. All the products are built on the HANA platform.

"At AppHaus, we observe user behaviour and design the product around it by focusing on limited features that can be built quickly and provide the most important functionalities," SAP's Subramanian said.

Richard Nixon is back on Twitter

NEW YORK: If you believe the media reports, Richard Nixon suffered a stroke in 1994 and died days later at age 81. He is buried in his native Yorba Linda, California, silent as the country marks the 40th anniversary of his resignation.

But the many obsessives among the 7,000-plus followers of @Dick_Nixon couldn't be blamed for sharing the president's suspicion of reporters. The "Nixon" on this Twitter feed has never been more alive, sounding off on everything from the Russians to the Academy Awards, lashing out at old enemies and sizing up such possible presidential contenders as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

"He is a smart fellow. But he should stop swinging at pitches he can't hit yet," reads a recent tweet.

The @Dick_Nixon feed is neither tribute nor parody but an uncanny reincarnation that has some Washington insiders and political junkies marveling that someone could so well capture the phrasing, savvy, tenacity, profanity and world view of our 37th president.

"He has his voice and his mentality down cold. And he also makes me laugh," says Elizabeth Drew, an author and journalist whose Watergate-era book, "Washington Journal," was reissued in May.

"I never got to meet Nixon, so this is the next best thing for me," says author and journalist Robert Draper, who has written books about Congress and the George W. Bush administration and is the grandson of Watergate prosecutor Leon Jaworski.

Admirers have speculated that the account manager is a politician, a journalist or even a member of the Nixon family. But Twitter "Nixon" is, apparently, 33-year-old playwright and New York resident Justin Sherin, born years after the president left office. Drew has met him and befriended him. John Weaver, a Republican strategist who worked on the 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns of Sen. John McCain, said that he had spoken with Sherin. Both Drew and Weaver are among his followers.

During a recent interview at a bar in Grand Central Station, Sherin said that he had long been fascinated by Nixon and his "weird" and "convoluted" way of expressing himself. In 2008, he began tweeting excerpts from Nixon's taped White House conversations. Around four years later, he decided to bring the former president into the 21st century, combining historical and original material.

"I try very hard either to use something that he did say in a similar context or that I could argue he would have said when faced with such a situation," says the clean-cut, round-eyed Sherin, whose plays include "Mickey Mouse Is Dead," a 2006 off-Broadway production about McCarthy-era blacklisting at the Walt Disney studios.

The former president and his wife, Pat (also dead, or so we've been told), reside on Twitter, as they did on Earth, in Saddle River, New Jersey. The president makes occasional trips to Washington and vacations in Key Biscayne, Florida. Some messages are initialed by former White House press secretary Ron Ziegler, who supposedly joined the afterlife in 2003.

Nixon on Twitter is impressed with Hillary Clinton ("She is cold, cold, tough as hell. That is the good side") and dismayed by President Barack Obama. ("The current president strikes me as a fellow who is reading from a book written by a lot of Ivy Leaguers who've never been to Moscow"). He is grateful for his supporters, seething that he doesn't have a deal for his latest book, "Realism," and mindful of his eternal rivals, the Kennedys

"Teddy had the best political skills out of any of them. Jack would rather be in the pool, Bobby burned witches," he tweeted.

On the Nixon feed, you get the calculating Nixon ("The ecology thing is crap for clowns. But there's votes in it"). You get Nixon on gays ("Our granddaughter is an actress. So many people in that line are gay. We go to the plays, shake their hands. They seem happy"), and Nixon on American cities ("Have you been to Tampa? My God. Nothing but Cubans and houses of prostitution)."

"He seems to know everything there is about Nixon," Weaver says of Sherin. "He also has the president's keen political analytical skills, and he has that streak within Nixon that undid the president."

The newest Nixon is understandably preoccupied with the current anniversary. (Nixon resigned on Aug. 9, 1974.) He has blunt words for his former aide and whistleblower, John Dean ("He knows how to lie. Why do you think we judged him effective?") and for the newspaper that broke the Watergate scandal, The Washington Post - now owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos - and star reporter Bob Woodward.

"Woodward still gets a check from the Post, you know," Nixon observed. "I was not aware that Bezos enjoys paying fellows who don't work."

Call him names, if you will. The president only gets angry with those he respects.

Just don't call him finished.

"All these bastards saying how young they are," he tweeted last month. "We're still here, by God. We'll outlive you all."

Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka okays 5,000 promotions

BANGALORE: In his first week as Infosys' new CEO, Vishal Sikka has approved around 5,000 promotions to help retain key staff and improve employee morale at the software company. Infosys has promoted employees across sales, delivery and business enabling functions, and across geographies, ET learns.

"We announced quarterly promotions in February 2014 to enable our employees to uncover and accelerate opportunities for career growth," said a company spokeswoman. "We have promoted close to 10,000 employees over the past two quarters." After this latest round of promotions, Infosys has promoted 15,000 employees since the start of the year.

The move by Sikka is part of his outreach to employees. Immediately after taking over as chief executive, the former SAP board member visited the company's Mysore campus and spent time with trainees. Founder Narayana Murthy, when he returned in his second stint in 2013 to steer Infosys after years of underperformance, too announced wage hikes within days of taking over. "Vishal is very clear in his thinking. His priority is to boost morale and retain talent at the company," said Dave Gardner, founder of Gardner and Associates Consulting, a California-based advisory firm.

Further, Sikka along with COO UB Pravin Rao initiated an employee engagement exercise called Murmurations under which over 160,000 staff were asked to share innovative ideas with the top boss. Gardner believes these measures will help the company bring down high attrition rates. During the first quarter ended June 30, Infosys reported an attrition rate of 19.5%.

Google to reward websites for better security

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 07 Agustus 2014 | 21.43

Google said it is encouraging website developers to make their sites secure for visitors by using site encryption as one of the factors to determine search ranking.

The company is urging website developers to adopt HTTPS, a form of website encryption that secures data send over the Web, to protect user data from hackers.

"Over the past few months we've been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms," the world's No. 1 search engine operator said on a blog post on Wednesday.

Developers compete fiercely with each other and tweak every small aspect of their websites to get a top search ranking. With Google making web encryption a factor in ranking, many would likely make their websites more secure for visitors.

"Without knowing about the technical details behind this move; as a principle I find it excellent," a user commented on the blog post.?

The security of a website will carry less weight in ranking compared with other factors such as high-quality content, but its importance might increase over time, Google said.

"We hope to see more websites using HTTPS in the future," it said.

Pandora cuts first direct label deal with Merlin

LOS ANGELES: Internet radio leader Pandora has come to its first-ever direct licensing deal with artists, a wide-ranging agreement with independent label group Merlin that both said would mean higher payments to artists and more play for them on Pandora stations.

That means Merlin-represented artists like Arcade Fire, Bad Religion and Lenny Kravitz could get more rotations as their representatives will be able to lobby Pandora to place their songs earlier in playlists where they fit.

Artists will also get access to Pandora data for the first time, enabling them to make informed decisions about where to tour, who to tour with, what their concert set list should be and what songs they might release next. They will also have tools to directly communicate with fans on Pandora.

For Pandora Media Inc, the move helps improve relations with artists, who have complained that royalties on digital streaming services are too low, especially as CD and digital download sales decline. It's a departure from its current business model, where it relies on government rate-setting bodies like the Copyright Royalty Board to determine how much it pays artists.

"In a world where it's very difficult to get onto terrestrial radio, a deal like this gives us an incredible opportunity to get our music in front of an enormous amount of people," said Merlin CEO Charles Caldas in an interview. "The data that comes out of the back of this should also enhance our business."

Brian McAndrews, CEO of Oakland, California-based Pandora, said the deal would not have a "major impact on costs"— a concern of investors that have pushed Pandora shares down some 38% from their high of $40.44 in early March.

He also said he was "very excited" about the company's first deal with a record label group and said he hoped that others would follow.

"We are open to other deals and we feel we can find a win-win-win for labels, artists and Pandora," he said in an interview.

Merlin, representing more than 20,000 independent labels, commands about a 10% share of music consumption worldwide and revenue collected from streaming platforms doubled to $89 million in the year through April.

The deal covers royalties for performances, not songwriting rights, and it comes as the Department of Justice is re-examining Pandora's right to automatically license song rights from publishing societies like the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc (BMI).

That process was put in place in 1941 as a counter to anti-competitive behavior by publishers, who say that the market dynamics have changed and they should have the right to negotiate songwriting royalties without the floor on rates set by the publishing societies.

Cognizant: We'll come out of this stronger

Cognizant's share price on the Nasdaq fell some 17% in opening trade following the company's sharp downward revision in its growth forecast for 2014.
Rajeev Mehta, CEO of IT services in Cognizant, says it's a temporary setback and the company's long-term growth story remains intact. Excerpts from an interview with TOI:

The stock market seems very disappointed with the revision in your guidance for the year.

It's a disappointment for us as well. Having said that, our overall strategy and business model is looking strong. We won three significant deals valued at $3.5 billion in the last quarter that supports our growth strategy.

The one with Health Net, which provides and administers health benefits to approximately 5.8 million people in the US, is valued at $2.7 billion over 7 years, and is the largest deal in the history of Cognizant. It's subject to contract finalization and regulatory approval, and we are working to close that quickly .

You also faced client problems?
There were leadership changes in a couple of accounts. We thought those things would settle down. It did not. The good news is that our relationships in those accounts remain healthy.

How is the overall market looking?
It's very strong. Deal pipelines are strong. So we should be in a strong position going into 2015. Continental Europe is looking very good.
We announced a good first quarter for Europe, but the second quarter saw specific issues with two clients in retail and financial services. We did an acquisition in Germany that has helped us to close the largest deal there.

What progress are you seeing in SMAC (social, mobile, analytics, cloud)?
We continue to looking at optimizing IT dollars and freeing up some dollars for discretionary spends. I don't think there has been one client conversation where we haven't discussed SMAC. The pipeline for SMAC is very strong. Cognizant gets over $500 million in revenue from SMAC on an annual basis and 80% of our top 100 customers have a SMAC component where Cognizant is involved.

How do you plan to tackle attrition that's at 16.5%?
It is a concern. We will continue to have focused programmes to curb attrition. Many people left during the quarter to go back to school.

Did you add 8,800 people in the quarter anticipating 16.5% growth? If so, would it weigh on your margins in the coming quarters?
We hired people in anticipation of our future growth. It won't impact margins as we see a healthy demand. We fundamentally believe in the long term model and we are well-positioned to clock higher growth. We'll come out of this much stronger.
