How Spotify honoured Winamp music player

WASHINGTON: As the good old Winamp has headed to its untimely demise, music-streaming service Spotify has reportedly rolled out 'Spotiamp', an app for Windows built by one of its engineers to stream music.

The company said that Spotiamp is a small tribute to honour the great legacy of Winamp and allows users to play their favourite music within the comfort of their favourite jukebox app.

According to The Verge, after signing up for the Spotify Premium account, the app lets users play their music playlists, search for tracks to play, listen to a built-in radio feature, shuffle the music, stream to Shoutcast-compatible speakers.

Spotiamp also supports old school Winamp visualization plugins.

The report said that Winamp could still be made available in some form if Microsoft purchases the app from AOL.

Soon, use SMS as government document

NEW DELHI: People may soon be able to use SMS communication with government departments as a documentary proof while utilising citizen-services for making payments, registrations and various other schemes.

The Centre launched a platform with about 241 applications for the public after completing pilot project of mobile governance with about 100 departments and testing proof of concepts.

The applications relate to services covering areas such as Right to Information (RTI), health, Aadhaar, education, directory services and so on.

Launching the 'Mobile Seva' service, Department of Electronics and IT secretary J Satyanarayana said: "Like Railways, we have to bring in a system wherein by showing (transaction) SMS or, whatever be the case (like e-mail), the proof on mobile is accepted as valid document.

"To increase our reach we need to bring this kind of practice in mobile and e-governance."

India has around 90 crore mobile phone subscribers. Satyanarayana said that at present digitally signed certificates are accepted as valid document but similar rule has to be made for mobile phone users where SMS or a communication available on mobile phone can be accepted as valid proof.

Joint Secretary at DEITY Rajendra Kumar said the department is ready with digital signature for mobile phones which the government can use in messages that are to be sent to the citizens applying for a service.

"We will start allocating digital signature (Public Key Infrastructure) to all government department on board in first quarter of 2014. Government departments can send communication on mobile of citizen seeking service," Kumar said.

He said any communication with PKI, say SMS, can be shown instead of a paper receipt or document.

At present, most of the mobile applications work on Android mobile phones and Java enabled phones.

Kumar said that in six months the government will bring all applications to HTML5 standard which will make them compatible with all mobile platforms.

DEITY Additional Secretary Rajiv Gauba said about 830 departments from the Centre, state and local authorities have come on board, and the department is working on the third phase to further scale up the mobile governance platform and bring more services under its ambit.

"We have to go through inter-ministerial consultations to scale this m-governance store for launch of third phase. The third phase will have many more departments and capacity to add more services application on this store. Final shape of third phase can be known only after consultation process is complete," he said.

Google's latest employee perk may be low-interest loans

WASHINGTON: Google is said to be working with a lending company to offer low-interest personal loans to its employees, which could make it the next big perk for those working for the search giant.

Google is among other companies that peer-to-peer lending marketplace Lending Club has been trying for putting cash holdings to work by offering the loans facilitated by the firm.

According to AllThingsD, Lending Club's pitch is part of the company's strategy to push beyond its initial focus on peer-to-peer loans by opening up its platform to large institutions such as banks and corporations as it eyes a potential 2014 IPO.

However, Lending Club CEO Renaud Laplanche said that the company is not currently working with Google on such an initiative, but he confirmed that his company is in talks with large companies about facilitating this type of human-resources benefit.

Laplanche explained that employees could use these loans to pay off high-interest credit card debt, large student loans or simply to consolidate debt into one loan, with payments being automatically deducted from paychecks.

The report said that the loans would also give corporations better returns on some of their holdings, while also serving as a recruiting and retention tool and could be a nice perk for part-time workers who may need the help the most.

Acer posts loss in Q3, names new CEO

TAIPEI: Taiwan's struggling personal computer maker Acer has named a new chief executive officer following losses of hundreds of millions of dollars in the third quarter.

Jason Chen, who takes over as both CEO and president from January 1, is currently senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's leading contract microchip maker.

Acer chairman Stan Shih said in a statement that Chen, who also worked at Intel and IBM, was "the ideal executive to lead our transformation."

The board had last month named 69-year-old Acer founder Shih as chairman and interim president, replacing two top executives who quit in the space of less than a month over the firm's poor performance.

Acer posted a worse-than-expected net loss of Tw$13.1 billion ($442.2 million) in the three months to September.

The company has said this was due to a rise in inventory levels and one-time compensation payments related to longstanding litigation.

But it has forecast that shipments of Acer's notebooks, tablet PCs and Chromebooks will fall 10% in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter.

In the face of the tough outlook, Acer has set up a business restructuring group led by Shih and co-founder George Huang.

Shih founded Acer in 1976 and built it into the world's second largest PC maker in its heyday, and one of the best known Taiwanese brands internationally, before he retired in 2004.

But Acer's fortunes worsened in recent years. In 2011 it lost Tw$6.8 billion in the second quarter -- compared to a profit of Tw$3.59 billion in the same period the previous year -- as sales were hit by competition from Apple's iPad.

The company has cut several hundred jobs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in recent years to reduce operating expenses. It envisages a 7% cut in its global workforce next year.

Samsung to invest over Rs 350cr in India: Sources

NEW DELHI: Korean major Samsung plans to invest in India about Rs 350 crore within a year to ramp up its electronics production, according to government sources.

"Electronics manufacturing policy has been attractive. Samsung has again proposed to invest about Rs 350 crore in its electronics plant. This is in addition to about its Rs 400 crore investment made for the mobile phone facility," a government official told PTI.

The company plans to invest this amount in production of flat panel TVs and washing machines, he added.

No comments were received from Samsung on the matter. Samsung has gained following a government decision in August to impose 36% import duty on flat panel TVs that were brought into India as part of baggage by passengers from abroad, the source added.

As per industry body Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association, about 1 million TVs were coming in as accompanied baggage in a year, which constitutes about 20 per cent of the total market size of the country.

The production of flat panel TV in the country has grew by about 39% in September and 20% in October on annual basis.

In July, Department of Electronics and IT cleared Samsung proposal of Rs 406 to invest in handset manufacturing.

Does the person you're shopping for find smartphone games a little dry? Well the folks at Pop Secret think the key to jazzing things up lies in adding butter, or in this case, a buttery smell.

The Pop Dongle is part of an iPhone game created by the popcorn maker. It plugs into your iPhone's earphone jack and when you slather pieces of popcorn with butter in the on-screen game the dongle releases a buttered-popcorn scent.

You won't find these in stores. The only dongles available to the public are being auctioned on eBay. The money goes to the Red Cross. The first sold earlier this month for $315. At last check, bidding on the second was up to $152.50 in an auction set to close on Monday.

The third will be auctioned off in bidding that ends on January 2.

Lying in your resume is good business

Thomas, Pickford & Thomas is an equity firm that specializes in oil and gas. It is based in Austin, Texas and was founded by Gary and Michael Thomas, who have several years of Wall Street experience.

The Daily Dot's Aaron Sankin writes, "I spent three years as a staff accountant at Thomas, Pickford & Thomas... The firm's philosophy, as listed on its website, is 'based on the premise that companies that generate a high return on equity on a consistent basis generally achieve an above average share price appreciation over time.' Jack Ford, my supervisor there, will have no problem verifying any of that for you."

There's a catch, of course. Sankin never worked there. He is not an accountant. "Everything about the firm, from its website to Mr Ford, is part of a career services package I purchased on the internet - for a mere $150. And it's shockingly effective," writes Sankin.

Thomas, Pickford & Thomas does not exist. Its website is fake. Rob Ford, the man who would talk to background-checkers for HR departments, is a phony. The entire setup is a package offered by a company called CareerExcuse.com.

"For a small fee, CareerExcuse. com promises to not only craft an elaborate lie based on your exact job specifications but to see it through for as long as necessary. The site will provide a live HR operator and staged supervisor, along with building and hosting a virtual company website - complete with a local phone number and toll-free fax. CareerExcuse will even go so far as to make the fake business show up on Google Maps," writes Sankin.

Career Excuse was started in 2009 by William Schmidt, after he was let go from his job at the height of the recession. When some of his unemployed co-workers asked him to act as a reference, he realized he was on to something big.

Within the first 24 hours of launching the CareerExcuse.com site, Schmidt received many orders for his services."Yes, there's a moral issue in fibbing on your resume to land a job, but that's for people to deal with themselves," he says.

"In today's environment with rampant unemployment, everyone's looking for an edge. Our service just gets them the interview." Schmidt is not the only one. In the past few years, the fake company industry has boomed, with companies like AlibiHQ.com joining the fray.

And it's getting even more sophisticated - and lucrative.

IT sector bets big on SCAM in 2014

The $110-billion technology services sector looking for new growth engines will be shouting SCAM in 2014. A trend that started a few years back, albeit in silos, social networking, cloud services, analytics and mobile computing, or SCAM, is now converging and will collectively account for 89% of new technology spending growth in 2014, says research firm IDC.

Industry experts from IT services players such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro as well as analysts see SCAM as not just another opportunity but one that fundamentally changes how computing is done. "From the mainframe era, we came to mini-computing, client-server and web. While aspects of SCAM have been around, there's an overall shift in how users access information, work and entertain themselves. They're now using mobile devices and companies want solutions that cut across the SCAM areas. In 2014 this will be a big focus area," says a business head of a top-five services companies who wished not to be named because his firm is in a silent period prior to the third quarter results.

Nexus of forces
For instance, a combination of the four services was in play for the first time at this year's US Open tennis tournament. IBM, the technology partner for the US Tennis Association for the past two decades, used analytics, cloud services, mobile and social technologies to bring the 2013 US Open to tennis fans. The IBM-enabled digital US Open offered fans, players, broadcasters and media with access — via tablets and smartphones — to a range of data insights, including player stats, videos, live scoring, and historical and real-time analysis of tennis data like, a player's winning chances based on past performance.

Research and analyst firm Gartner calls SCAM a 'nexus of forces'. Gartner expects SCAM business to be worth $104 billion, contributing about a fourth of business software revenue by 2017, up from about 10% at present. Says Naveen Mishra, research director, Gartner India: "Companies will rejig portfolios around SCAM. While the shift to SCAM has been happening for the past three to four years, the business opportunity is becoming real and bigger due to adoption of smartphones and mobile internet usage."

Globally, by 2015 there will be 5 billion mobile devices, and mobile app revenues alone will be $52 billion. Social media will have 1.5 billion users globally. That alone will be a $34-billion opportunity. Mishra believes customers from Fortune 500 to even smaller global companies will outsource business to IT services players to extract value from convergence of mobile, cloud, social media, information and analytics.

On cloud nine
N Chandrasekaran, managing director and CEO at TCS, the country's largest technology services provider, terms SCAM as "digital forces". "Social, cloud, analytics with big data and mobile are interlinked. Mobile computing is powerful because of cloud. Without cloud, mobile will have limited storage and memory. Without cloud services, social has no meaning. Without social, big data is small data and without big data there's less of analytics. So, we can't say one is bigger than the other. They are all linked to each other."

The SCAM opportunity which has been largely peripheral till now will become mainstream in 2014. According to a recent Gartner statement, "Technology providers must realize that the disruptive forces of cloud, information, mobile and social will reach mainstream status in 2014 and create new technology requirements, drive new purchasing and establish new competitive realities."

Chandrasekaran adds that 2014-15 will be better than the current fiscal year for the technology services industry. Much of that optimism comes from new demand for services arising out of SCAM.

IDC sees mobile, cloud services, social networking, big data and analytics help drive a 5% jump in global technology spending in 2014 to $2.1 trillion. Says Mishra: "It will transform business models of IT services companies. In a bid to acquire skills in the space, services providers will be looking for buyouts."

For instance, Wipro acquired a stake in data analytics firm Opera Solutions in May this year. He adds: "Large companies like Wipro, Tech Mahindra and TCS are in a better position to seize the opportunity. The small companies are too focussed on old models. They can look at partnerships with analytics or cloud firms to tap into the opportunity."

New vs old
However, large companies are not giving up on their existing models. Explains Chandrasekaran: "Why should one give up a successful model? New opportunities like the digital forces will run parallel to existing business."

Adds Sanjay Purohit, global head, products, platforms and solutions, Infosys: "Enterprise cloud will gather speed. We see a 10% increase in the number of enterprises using at least one cloud platform, while analytics will progress beyond establishing obvious relationships among data to uncover new and unexpected correlations. On the mobility front, enterprises must consider mobile application management as well."

According to Ankita Somani, IT analyst at Angel Broking, for large services providers like TCS, the SCAM portfolio accounts for less than 5% of the total business at present but "2014 demand looks good in these areas. A focus on SCAM will help improve both volume growth and margins."

While global companies — from banks to pizza outlets — seek to strengthen SCAM services to know better what the customer wants, IT companies see it not only as a new business opportunity but one that de-risks dependence on traditional backoffice maintenance and systems integration services.

Inside the Bitcoin mines

On the flat lava plain of Reykjanesbaer, Iceland, near the Arctic Circle, you can find the mines of Bitcoin.

To get there, you pass through a fortified gate and enter a featureless yellow building. After checking in with a guard behind bulletproof glass, you face four more security checkpoints, including a so-called man trap that allows passage only after the door behind you has shut. This brings you to the center of the operation, a fluorescent-lit room with more than 100 whirring silver computers, each in a locked cabinet and each cooled by blasts of Arctic air shot up from vents in the floor.

These computers are the laborers of the virtual mines where Bitcoins are unearthed. Instead of swinging pickaxes, these custom-built machines, which are running an open-source Bitcoin program, perform complex algorithms 24 hours a day. If they come up with the right answers before competitors around the world do, they win a block of 25 new Bitcoins from the virtual currency's decentralized network.

The network is programmed to release 21 million coins eventually. A little more than half are already out in the world, but because the system will release Bitcoins at a progressively slower rate, the work of mining could take more than 100 years.

The scarcity — along with a speculative mania that has grown up around digital money — has made each new Bitcoin worth as much as $1,100 in recent weeks.

Bitcoins are invisible money, backed by no government, useful only as a speculative investment or online currency, but creating them commands a surprisingly hefty real-world infrastructure.

"What we have here are money-printing machines," said Emmanuel Abiodun, 31, founder of the company that built the Iceland installation, shouting above the din of the computers. "We cannot risk that anyone will get to them."

Mr Abiodun is one of a number of entrepreneurs who have rushed, gold-fever style, into large-scale Bitcoin mining operations in just the last few months. All of these people are making enormous bets that Bitcoin will not collapse, as it has threatened to do several times.

Just last week, moves by Chinese authorities caused the price of a Bitcoin to drop briefly below $500. If the system did crash, the new computers would be essentially useless because they are custom-built for Bitcoin mining.

Miners, though, are among the virtual-currency faithful, believing that Bitcoin will turn into a new, cheaper way of sending money around the world, leaving behind its current status as a largely speculative commodity.

Most of the new operations popping up guard their secrecy closely, but Mr Abiodun agreed to show his installation for the first time. An earnest young Briton, with the casual fashion taste of the tech cognoscenti, he was a computer programmer at HSBC in London when he decided to invest in specialized computers that would carry out constant Bitcoin mining.

The computers that do the work eat up so much energy that electricity costs can be the deciding factor in profitability. There are Bitcoin mining installations in Hong Kong and Washington State, among other places, but Mr Abiodun chose Iceland, where geothermal and hydroelectric energy are plentiful and cheap. And the arctic air is free and piped in to cool the machines, which often overheat when they are pushed to the outer limits of their computing capacity.

The energy required to run these computers is huge, and has led to criticism that Bitcoin mining is wasteful, not to mention socially useless. The operation can baffle even those entrusted with its care. Helgi Helgason, a burly, bald Icelandic man who oversees the data center that houses the machines, said that when he first heard that a Bitcoin mining operation was moving in he expected something very different. "I thought we'd bring in machines and put bags behind them and the coins would fall into them," said Mr. Helgason, with a laugh.

Since then, the education he has received about Bitcoins has been enlightening, but only to a point.

"It's a strange business," he said, "and I can't say that I understand it."

Until just a few months ago, most Bitcoin mining was done on the home computers of digital-money fanatics. But as the value of a single Bitcoin skyrocketed over the last few months, the competition for new coins set off a race that quickly turned mining into an industrial enterprise.

"Even if you had hardware earlier this year, that is becoming obsolete," said Greg Schvey, a co-founder of Genesis Block, a virtual-currency research firm. "You are talking about order-of-magnitude jumps."

The work the computers do is akin to guessing at a lottery number. The faster the computers run, the better chance of guessing that right number and winning valuable coins. So mining entrepreneurs are buying chips and computers designed specifically — and only — for this work. The machines in Iceland are worth about $20,000 each on the open market.

The energy required to run these computers is huge, and has led to criticism that Bitcoin mining is wasteful, not to mention socially useless. But Mr Abiodun prides himself on using renewable power, at least in Iceland.

When Mr Abiodun first heard about Bitcoin mining in 2010, he thought it was a scam. Begun in 2009 as the imaginative creation of an anonymous programmer (or group of programmers) known as Satoshi Nakamoto, it was initially little more than a tech world curiosity. As early users connected their computers into the network, they became a part of the decentralized infrastructure that hosts Bitcoin's open-source program. The computers joining the network immediately began capturing virtual coins. The network's protocol was designed to release a new block of Bitcoins every 10 minutes until all 21 million were released, with the blocks getting smaller as time goes on.

If the miners in the network take more than 10 minutes to guess the correct code, the Bitcoin program adapts to make the puzzle easier. If they solve the problems in less than 10 minutes, the code becomes harder.

Mr Abiodun's opinion of Bitcoin changed in January, when he saw the price rising. He installed a free application on his home computer that linked him into the Bitcoin network and set it to mining, harnessing the power of his graphics card, which is the part of a normal computer best suited to doing the code work.

Mr Abiodun's computer was in the guest room of his house in southeast London. Working at HSBC during the day and tinkering with his Bitcoin system at night, he realized if he wanted to make any money, his computer would have to run around the clock.

The constant computing, however, overheated the graphics card and pushed the computer's exhaust fans into overdrive. When he added another graphics card, then a new computer, the room became too noisy for guests to sleep, and the windows had to be kept open to release the heat. That did not make his wife, Gloria, who was pregnant at the time, very happy.

"It just created a scenario where there was no way our parents would come over to stay," he said. "I did offer to put her parents in a hotel, but that didn't go down well."

Mr Abiodun's wife finally gave him an ultimatum — either the computers had to go, or he did. At the same time, he was making money, and friends were asking if they could invest in his mining operation.

In February, Mr Abiodun used the investors' money to buy machines from a startup dedicated solely to manufacturing specialized mining computers. The competition for those computers is so intense that he had to pay for them and wait for delivery.

When the delays became lengthy, however, he went on eBay and paid $130,000 for two high-powered machines, which he set up in June in a data center in Kansas City, Kansas.

This was the beginning of Mr Abiodun's company, Cloud Hashing, which rents out computing power to people who want to mine without buying computers themselves. The term hashing refers to the repetitive code guessing that miners do.

Today, all of the machines dedicated to mining Bitcoin have a computing power about 4,500 times the capacity of the United States government's mightiest supercomputer, the IBM Sequoia, according to calculations done by Michael B Taylor, a professor at the University of California, San Diego. The computing capacity of the Bitcoin network has grown by around 30,000% since the beginning of the year.

"This whole new kind of machine has come into existence in the last 12 months," said Professor Taylor, who is studying mining hardware. In the chase for the lucky code that will unlock new Bitcoins, mining computers are also verifying and assigning unique identifying tags to each Bitcoin transaction, acting as accountants for the virtual currency world.

"The network is providing the infrastructure for making sure the currency is being transferred between people according to the rules," Professor Taylor said, "and making sure people aren't creating currency illegally."

Even before Mr Abiodun's machines in Kansas City were up and running, it was clear that they wouldn't be enough. So he ordered about 100 machines from a start-up in Sweden and, in October, had them moved to the facility in Iceland.

In just a few months, that installation has generated more than $4 million worth of Bitcoins, at the current value, according to the company's account on the public Bitcoin network.

At the end of each day, the spoils are divided up and sent to Cloud Hashing's customers. Last Wednesday, for example, the entire operation unlocked 225 Bitcoins, valued at around $160,000 at recent prices. Cloud Hashing keeps about 20% of the capacity for its own mining.

The unregulated Bitcoin-mining industry is ripe for abuse, and ventures that sound similar to Cloud Hashing have turned out to be scams. Mr Abiodun's company has proved itself real, but it is still unclear if it is a good deal for customers. Cloud Hashing charges $999 to rent a tiny portion of the company's computing power for one year.

That's an expensive price for the computing capacity they are getting, but Mr Abiodun argues that it's a good value because individual miners would not be able to buy his modern machines outright. It's a little like buying a fractional ownership in a private jet; you might not want responsibility for the jet itself, and it's out of your price range anyway. He also says he provides the maintenance and keeps away thieves and hackers.

Some Cloud Hashing customers have also complained on internet forums that it can be hard to get a response from the company when something goes wrong. But this has not stopped new contracts from pouring in. Cloud Hashing now has 4,500 customers, up from 1,000 in September.

Mr Abiodun acknowledges that the company has not been prepared to deal with its rapid growth. He said he had used $4 million raised from two angel investors to add customer service representatives to offices in Austin, Texas, and London. Cloud Hashing is now preparing to open a mining facility in a data center near Dallas, which will hold more than $3 million worth of new machines being produced by CoinTerra, a Texas start-up run by a former Samsung chip designer.

The higher energy costs — and required air-conditioning — in Texas are worth it for Mr Abiodun. He wants his operation to be widely distributed in case of power shortages or regulatory issues in one location. But he is also expanding his Icelandic operation, shipping in about 66 machines that have been running for the last few months near their manufacturer in Ukraine.

Mr Abiodun said that by February, he hopes to have about 15% of the entire computing power of the Bitcoin network, significantly more than any other operation.

Inside the Iceland data center, which also hosts servers for large companies like BMW and is guarded and maintained by a company called Verne Global, strapping Icelandic men in black outfits were at work recently setting up the racks for the machines coming from Ukraine. Gazing over his creation, Mr Abiodun had a look that was somewhere between pride and anxiety, and spoke about the virtues of this Icelandic facility where the power has not gone down once.

"We don't want downtime — ever, never," he said. "Not with what we paid. Not with Bitcoin."
