Beware, USB devices offer hackers direct route to computers

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 31 Juli 2014 | 21.43

BOSTON: USB devices such as mice, keyboards and thumb-drives can be used to hack into personal computers in a potential new class of attacks that evade all known security protections, a top computer researcher revealed.

Karsten Nohl, chief scientist with Berlin's SR Labs, noted that hackers could load malicious software onto tiny, low-cost computer chips that control functions of USB devices but which have no built-in shields against tampering with their code.

"You cannot tell where the virus came from. It is almost like a magic trick," said Nohl, whose research firm is known for uncovering major flaws in mobile phone technology.

The finding shows that bugs in software used to run tiny electronics components that are invisible to the average computer user can be extremely dangerous when hackers figure out how to exploit them. Security researchers have increasingly turned their attention to uncovering such flaws.

Nohl said his firm has performed attacks by writing malicious code onto USB control chips used in thumb drives and smartphones. Once the USB device is attached to a computer, the malicious software can log keystrokes, spy on communications and destroy data, he said.

Computers do not detect the infections when tainted devices are inserted into a PC because anti-virus programs are only designed to scan for software written onto memory and do not scan the "firmware" that controls the functioning of those devices, he said.

Nohl and Jakob Lell, a security researcher at SR Labs, will describe their attack method at next week's Black Hat hacking conference in Las Vegas in a presentation titled: "Bad USB - On Accessories that Turn Evil."

Thousands of security professionals gather at the annual conference to hear about the latest hacking techniques, including ones that threaten security of business computers, consumer electronics and critical infrastructure.

Nohl said he would not be surprised if intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency have already figured out how to launch attacks using this technique.

Last year he presented research at Black Hat on breakthrough methods for remotely attacking sim cards on mobile phones. In December, documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden demonstrated that the US spy agency was using a similar technique for surveillance, which it called "Monkey Calendar."

An NSA spokeswoman declined to comment.

SR Labs tested the technique by infecting controller chips made by major manufacturer Taiwan's Phison Electronics, and placing them into USB memory drives and smartphones running Google's Android operating system.

Similar chips are made by Silicon Motion Technology Corp and Alcor Micro Corp. Nohl said his firm did not test devices with chips from those manufacturers.

Phison and Google did not respond to requests for comment. Officials with Silicon Motion and Alcor Micro could not immediately be reached.

Nohl said he believes hackers would have a "high chance" of corrupting other kinds of controller chips besides those made by Phison, because their manufacturers are not required to secure software. He said those chips, once infected, could be used to infect mice, keyboards and other devices that connect via USB.

"The sky is the limit. You can do anything at all," he said.

In his tests, Nohl said he was also able to gain remote access to a computer by having the USB instruct the computer to download a malicious program with instructions that the PC believed were coming from a keyboard. He said he was also able to change what are known as DNS network settings on a computer, essentially instructing the machine to route internet traffic through malicious servers.

Once a computer is infected, it could be programmed to infect all USB devices that are subsequently attached to that PC, which would then corrupt machines that they contact.

"Now all of your USB devices are infected. It becomes self-propagating and extremely persistent," Nohl said. "You can never remove it."

Christof Paar, a professor of electrical engineering at Germany's University of Bochum who reviewed the findings, said

he believes the new research will prompt others to take a closer look at USB technology, and potentially lead to the discovery of more bugs. He called on manufacturers to move to better protect their chips to thwart any attacks.

"The manufacturer should make it much harder to change the software that runs on a USB stick," Paar said.

Internet privacy service Tor warns users it was attacked

BOSTON: Tor, the prominent system for protecting internet privacy, said many of its users trying to reach hidden sites might have been identified by government-funded researchers.

In a note on the nonprofit's website, Tor Project leader Roger Dingledine said the service had identified computers on its network that had been quietly altering Tor traffic for five months in an attempt to unmask users connecting to what are known as "hidden services."

Dingledine said it was "likely" the attacking computers, which were removed on July 4, were operated on behalf of two researchers at the Software Engineering Institute, which is housed at Carnegie-Mellon University, but funded mainly by the US Department of Defense.

The pair had been scheduled to speak on identifying Tor users at the Black Hat security conference next month. After Tor developers complained to Carnegie-Mellon, officials there said the research had not been cleared and canceled the talk.

Previous reports on the research had already raised alarms among privacy activists. Dingledine went further, warning on Wednesday that "users who operated or accessed hidden services from early February through July 4 should assume they were affected."

Those navigating to ordinary websites should be in the clear.

It remains uncertain how much data the researchers were able to collect and what will happen to that information, which would be of interest to intelligence agencies and law enforcement.

Hidden services include underground drug sites such as the shuttered Silk Road, as well as privacy-conscious outfits such as SecureDrop, which is designed to safely connect whistle blowers with media outlets.

Dingledine said the physical locations where the hidden services were housed could have been exposed, although probably not the content on them that was viewed by a visitor.

"Unfortunately, I cannot comment," lead Software Engineering Institute researcher Alexander Volynkin told Reuters.

Institute spokesman Richard Lynch declined to comment, while the FBI had no immediate response to questions about whether it would seek the data.

Defense Department spokeswoman Valerie Henderson said she did not know if officials there would have the right to raw research from the Institute.

"You have to know what organization and which individuals inside the Department of Defense might have set this one up," Henderson said.

Even if there is an overarching guideline about access to unpublished research, "the general rule may not apply," she added.

Tor is an anonymity tool designed to protect the identity of Internet users by routing traffic through multiple nodes around the world. It is used by human rights activists, criminals and others looking to evade surveillance.

Dingledine advised users to upgrade to the latest version of its software, which addresses the vulnerability that was exploited. He cautioned that attempts to break Tor were likely to continue.

Leaked National Security Agency documents show the NSA has logged the IP addresses of many Tor users and might have scanned emails for users living outside of the United States and its four closest intelligence allies, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, media in Germany reported this month.

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 30 Juli 2014 | 21.43

WASHINGTON: LinkedIn is due to get a makeover soon with the social networking website planning to introduce a slew of features on its mobile app.

The new features aim to make the app more user-friendly and provide information that is more relevant. One such feature will enable users to sift through information on the homepage depending on the amount of time they have, reported CNET.

Tomer Cohen, head of LinkedIn's mobile product team, said that the focus will be on providing key information first.

Three years ago, only 8% of its users were using mobile devices to access the website but the company expects more than half of its users to start using mobile devices this year. Therefore, LinkedIn has now decided to focus on developing its mobile app.

If you have not updated your LinkedIn profile completely, the app will now remind you to do it. Moreover, you will also be able to see how others have found you on the website when you check the "Who's Viewed Your Profile" section on its mobile app.

The new features however, will appear on the mobile apps first and then on the website.

Always misplacing keys, wallet? These apps may help

TORONTO: Finding misplaced keys, wallets and purses could get easier with new apps that take the guess work out of trying to remember where they might be.

Tile, an app for iPhones, can track wallets, cars and even pets with small battery-powered plastic tags that show where the lost item is on a map on the smartphone and emit a noise to locate it more easily.

With all of the technology around us, it is still crazy to think that we still lose our things, said Nick Evans, chief executive office of Tile, based in San Mateo, California.

Using Bluetooth technology the app tracks the location of the missing item within up 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 meters). If it is lost outside the range, its last location will be displayed.

The app also uses crowd-sourcing so if other Tile app users come within range of a lost item the location is updated for the owner.

"Other people in the community never see that your stuff is missing, but the app tracks the location so that you know where it is," Evans explained.

The Chipolo app for iPhone and Android devices works in a similar way with tags that can be placed on necklaces, bracelets, key chains or attached to items. Users can also set notifications to get an alert when an item goes out of range.

"In Japan, some of our Chipolo users are attaching them to their kids so that when their kids are in the playground they will be notified if they go out of range, said Tadej Jevsevar, a co-founder of Chipolo, which is based in Slovenia.

If someone loses the smartphone, shaking the Chipolo tag can help them find it by making the phone ring, even if it is in silent mode, according to Jevsevar.

Both apps are free and available worldwide. Each waterproof Tile tag costs $19.99. The Chipolo tag sells for $29.99 and has a replaceable battery.

Aapo Markkanen, a principal analyst at the market intelligence firm ABI Research in London, said although the apps are useful, the tags to trace the lost items are too big and clumsy.

The stuff that goes missing is usually small. It will become more appealing when it becomes less intrusive and sizeable,i he explained about the tabs that measure about 37mm (1.4-inches).

Nationwide MNP likely to implemented by March 2015

NEW DELHI: Government expects to implement nationwide mobile number portability by March 31, 2015, which will allow subscribers to shift their mobile service on to the network of any telecom operator throughout the country without changing their cellphone number.

"The national MNP is likely expected to be implemented by March 31, 2015," Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

The Department of Telecom has sought Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's view on additional entry fee, performance bank guarantee and financial bank guarantee to be charged from existing MNP service providers.

TRAI asked the DoT not to make any changes in entry fee and bank guarantee of companies involved in managing MNP service due to various reasons.

At present, two companies Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution operate to provide MNP service under which mobile subscribers can change their telecom operators while retaining their number. TRAI said that these companies have still around 5 years before their license validity expires.

TRAI has submitted its reply to DoT on July 21 which will be placed before inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission for its consideration.

The regulator in its recommendation has said that telecom operators and MNP service providers should be given six months time to make necessary technical changes in their network to start nationwide MNP.

Netflix agrees to pay AT&T to ensure smooth video delivery

WASHINGTON: Video streaming service Netflix has agreed to pay US broadband provider AT&T to ensure smooth delivery of Netflix content to internet users, the companies said on Tuesday.

The announcement of the deal, struck in May, comes as Netflix has been waging a public campaign against such fees, which they present as tolls, and calling on the Federal Communications Commission to review the market.

Having brokered this so-called interconnection agreement, AT&T and Netflix are now working to build out new network connections for Netflix content to be delivered directly to AT&T's servers "to improve the viewing experience for our mutual subscribers," the companies' representatives said.

"We're now beginning to turn up the connections, a process that should be complete in the coming days," AT&T spokesman Michael Balmoris said.

This marks the third such agreement Netflix struck with major US internet service providers in recent months after it revealed similar traffic exchange agreements with Verizon Communications Inc in April and Comcast Corp in February.

Consumers have also complained to the FCC about an ongoing spat between Netflix and major Internet providers, saying they are experiencing slow download speeds for Netflix video.

Both sides accuse each other of causing a slowdown in internet speeds by the way they route traffic.

Financial terms of such interconnection agreements are secret. The FCC last month moved to privately review the current deals, though did not indicate specific plans to regulate that part of the market.

Latvia's airBaltic chalks up bitcoin sales in 'world first'

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 Juli 2014 | 21.43

RIGA: Latvia's flagship carrier airBaltic has announced a global coup as it boasted it is the first airline worldwide to sell tickets in exchange for bitcoins, a controversial virtual currency.

"It's still a relatively small number (of tickets), fewer than one thousand, but we expect this to increase," airBaltic spokesman Janis Vanags told AFP, refusing to give an exact number.

"We believe we have put all the precautions in place to avoid any risks" for nonpayment, he added.

Bitcoin is a revolutionary software-based payment system introduced in 2009. It operates without a central bank or regulator, which has led to calls from some quarters for it to be brought under some form of control. Some high-profile cases of bitcoin investors being ripped off has also made potential users wary.

airBaltic, whose hub is the Latvian capital Riga, is still displaying ticket prices in euros on its website and only the cheapest class of tickets are available for purchase via the virtual currency.

Google searches can predict stock market crashes: Study

LONDON: A rise in Google searches for terms relating to business and politics can predict a future stock market crash, researchers have claimed.

A team of researchers from Warwick Business School in the UK and Boston University in the US has developed a method to automatically identify topics that people search for on Google before subsequent stock market falls.

Applied to data between 2004 and 2012, the method shows that increases in searches for business and politics preceded falls in the stock market.

The researchers suggest that this method could be applied to help identify warning signs in search data before a range of real world events.

"Search engines, such as Google, record almost everything we search for," said Chester Curme, Research Fellow at Warwick Business School and lead author of the study.

"Records of these search queries allow us to learn about how people gather information online before making decisions in the real world. So there's potential to use these search data to anticipate what large groups of people may do," Curme said.

In previous studies, Curme and his colleagues, Tobias Preis and Suzy Moat of Warwick Business School, and H Eugene Stanley of Boston University, have demonstrated that usage data from Google and Wikipedia may contain early warning signs of stock market moves.

However, these findings relied on the researchers choosing an appropriate set of keywords, in particular those related to finance.

In order to enable algorithms to automatically identify patterns in search activity that might be related to subsequent real world behaviour, the team quantified the meaning of every single word on Wikipedia.

This allowed the researchers to categorise words into topics, so that a "business" topic may contain words such as "business", "management", and "bank". The algorithm identified a broad selection of topics, ranging from food to architecture to cricket.

The team then used Google Trends to see how often each week thousands of these words were searched for by Internet users in the US between 2004 and 2012.

Researchers found that changes in how often users searched for terms relating to business and politics could be connected to subsequent stock market moves.

"By mining these datasets, we were able to identify a historic link between rises in searches for terms for both business and politics, and a subsequent fall in stock market prices," said Moat.

"Our results are in line with the hypothesis that increases in searches relating to both politics and business could be a sign of concern about the state of the economy, which may lead to decreased confidence in the value of stocks, resulting in transactions at lower prices," Moat added.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

China starts to squeeze tech companies from US

BEIJING: China, once the hottest growth market for US technology companies, is turning chillier.

In the latest sign of the change in climate, officials from a Chinese government agency that enforces anti-monopoly laws and other business regulations visited four Microsoft offices across China on Monday, the company said.

China is still one of the largest and most promising markets for US tech companies, as well as home to the factories that make devices as varied as iPhones and Xboxes. But tensions between the United States and China have escalated over spying concerns by both sides. And in recent months Chinese authorities have increased their scrutiny of foreign tech companies.

At the same time, they appear to be stepping up their use of laws to help bolster the fortunes of native technology companies.

"The US tech companies are much more concerned than they were two or three years ago," said Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a technology policy think tank. "Most of them were looking with growing interest at the China market. Now they're much more concerned that the rug is being pulled out from under them."

The officials from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce visited Microsoft offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, Joanna Li, a public relations officer for the company, confirmed in a phone interview, answering questions about earlier reports in the Chinese news media.

"There was a visit from government officials to our offices," she said. "Given the sensitivity of the issue, I can't say any more."

There was no announcement about the visits on the State Administration's website, and calls to its Beijing headquarters after working hours were not answered.

The news may add to the growing anxiety among foreign corporate executives who have watched Chinese authorities take on some of the largest Western companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, the British pharmaceutical giant whose employees in China have been accused of bribing doctors and hospital staff to use the company's products.

But China has used its anti-monopoly law, which went into effect in 2008, with a special zeal against US technology companies.

Last week, the state media announced that a separate regulatory body, the National Development and Reform Commission, was looking into possible antitrust violations by Qualcomm, one of the world's largest makers of the chips used in mobile devices. According to the Securities Times newspaper, the agency is investigating accusations that the company overcharged Chinese customers and abused its dominant market position.

Whether intentional or not, the announcement coincided with a visit to China last week by Qualcomm's chief executive, Steven M Mollenkopf, who held talks with government officials and announced the creation of a $150 million "strategic venture fund" to invest in Chinese technology startup companies.

In May, Bloomberg reported that the Chinese government has started to examine the dependence of Chinese banks on computer servers made by IBM.

In April, the US Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to secretary of state John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jacob J Lew expressing concern that Chinese authorities were using their anti-monopoly law "to advance industrial policies that nurture domestic enterprises, rather than the internationally accepted norm of using competition law to protect consumer welfare and competition."

Meanwhile, Chinese news media reports have named Microsoft as among the foreign technology companies likely to come under tighter government checks for security risks after the revelations by Edward J Snowden about US government surveillance.

"It's a combination of punishment and paranoia," said James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a research group. "The Chinese government has always been suspicious of US IT products and is using Snowden as an excuse."

Duncan Clark, chairman of BDA China, a consulting firm in Beijing, said Chinese investigations into American tech companies operating in China appeared to have gathered momentum after the Justice Department's decision in May to indict the Chinese People's Liberation Army on charges that it hacked into the networks of US companies, including the United States Steel Corp.

"Previously there would be hesitation before taking on a big iconic US company and the impact it might have on trade, but not anymore," he said. "The gloves are off."

In May, Chinese police accused the former head of Glaxo's China operations, Mark Reilly, of ordering his subordinates to form a "massive bribery network" that resulted in higher drug prices and illegal revenue of more than $150 million. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce, which led the investigation into Glaxo, is the agency whose employees visited Microsoft's offices on Monday.

The targeting of American tech companies began in earnest four years ago, after Google, complaining about hacking and requirements that it censor its search results, announced that it would move most of its China-based search functions to Hong Kong. Since then, Google services like Gmail and Google Books have been almost inaccessible here at times, although the Chinese government denies any role in the interference.

Microsoft's operating systems and software are widely used by Chinese businesses and government offices. Often, those products have been bootleg copies, but the company also has been the subject of citizens' complaints that its dominance amounts to a monopoly that has allowed it to charge too much.

In another blow to Microsoft, China's Central Government Procurement Center forbade state agencies from using the company's new Windows 8 operating system on its computers over security concerns prompted by Microsoft's decision to end technical support for its older Windows XP operating system, according to Xinhua, China's official state-run news agency.

"We aim to build products that deliver the features, security and reliability customers expect, and we're happy to answer the government's questions," Li said in an email.

In June, President Xi Jinping of China reinforced longstanding government demands that China master and control new technologies, and reduce the country's reliance on foreign suppliers.

"Only if core technologies are in our own hands can we truly hold the initiative in competition and development," Xi told Chinese scientists and engineers.

New cap allows you to control smartphone via voice

Written By Unknown on Senin, 28 Juli 2014 | 21.43

MELBOURNE: A baseball cap that connects with the wearer's smartphone via Bluetooth and allows them to control their device via voice commands has been designed.

Sydney-based entrepreneur Will Miller has started a crowd-funding campaign for the baseball cap that allows voice control of a paired device.

Snaptrax looks like your regular baseball cap, but features a Bluetooth module, microphone and speakers built into the corners of the cap just above the peak.

The wearer can make and receive calls, respond to texts and emails and control music, with a button panel on the side to operate volume and pairing, 'Gizmag' reported.

The development of Snaptrax is in its early stages and Miller and his team are working through the technical details regarding the battery and charging capabilities.

"Obviously we don't want the whole lining to be filled with batteries. It has to be comfortable. We are aiming for around a 90 minute charge time and a couple of days use at a time," Miller said.

The cap is available in four varying combinations of red and black and the makers will begin shipping in January 2015.

Imoji, an app to turn your selfies into emojis

WASHINGTON: A new app allows you to turn your selfies or other images into textable emojis that you can send to your friends.

The app, called Imoji, allows users to choose a picture from the web or phone, or take one. They can eliminate the background with a Photoshop eraser-like tool and save the photo.

The photo can be dragged into the middle of the screen and users can send their personalized emojis to friends, Gizmodo reported.

"Imoji makes your texts more you," according to the app maker's official website.

Users can also choose to make a sticker private, or allow to make it public for others to use in their own conversations. They can also search through a preexisting selection of stickers.

2.5 billion smartphone users globally by 2015: Stratergy Analytics

NEW YORK: Nearly 2.5 billion people or 35% of the global population is expected to use smartphones by the end of 2015, says the latest report of US based industry tracker Strategy Analytics.

The reason behind this surge is the expansion of low-end smartphones by global players that has helped them make inroads into emerging markets in the developing countries like India.

"The Asia-Pacific region holds the most number of smartphone users while Europe and North America have the highest portion of people holding the high-tech handsets among all mobile phone users," the report said.

That means more than three in every 10 people will be smartphone users.

According to the market research firm, the number of global users had surpassed one billion in 2012.

According to a separate report by Sweden-based Ericsson, smartphone users reached 1.9 billion at the end of 2013 and is set to expand to 3.3 billion by the end of 2015.

Chinese officials pay surprise visit to Microsoft offices

BEIJING: Chinese government officials have made sudden visits to Microsoft offices in China, a spokeswoman for the company said on Monday, but declined to give any reason for the inspections.

China's State Administration for Industry & Commerce, which Chinese media reported had made the visits to Microsoft offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, declined to give comment outside of working hours.

Microsoft has been a focus of anti-US technology sentiment in China since US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden revealed widespread spying programmes, including PRISM, which used US company's technology for cyber espionage.

In an e-mailed statement, the Microsoft spokeswoman said, "We aim to build products that deliver the features, security and reliability customers expect and we're happy to answer the government's questions," but declined to give any further information.

The world's largest software company has had a rocky time in China, including a call by state media for "severe punishment" against American tech firms for helping the US government to steal secrets and monitor China.

Earlier this month, activists said Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service was being disrupted in China.

In May, central government offices were banned from installing Windows 8, Microsoft's latest operating system, on new computers. This ban appears to not have been lifted, as multiple procurement notices since then have not allowed Windows 8.

Nevertheless, the company has pushed forward with plans to release its Xbox One gaming console in China in September, forming distribution ties with wireless carrier China Telecom Corp and e-commerce company JD.com.

8 tips to save eyes from computer vision syndrome

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 Juli 2014 | 21.43

It may sound obvious, but computer screens have a way of making us forget to blink. It is, in fact, very common to blink less frequently while working on the computer. But blinking at regular intervals while working on computers is essential as it moistens eyes and prevents them from dryness and irritation.

If you still feel dryness or irritation in your eyes, switch to using lubricating eye drops prescribed by your doctor. And if you suffer from chronically dry, itchy eyes, then using a laptop instead of a desktop computer is recommended. When you're looking down at a laptop, your eyes tend to stay more moist.

3 apps to track your money on the go

Isn't it odd that even in 2014, basic money management isn't taught to students in schools?

Having been both a salaried employee and a freelancer for several years, I still have trouble keeping track of my income, savings and investments. For those just getting started with their careers and beginning to spend their own money, it's important to learn about your own financial habits early on. Whether you want to travel the world, pay off loans quickly or invest in real estate, managing your money is essential to any financial goal you set for yourself.

Thankfully, there are great apps for your mobile devices that can help you monitor your income and savings, track what you spend on, tell you more about your spending habits over time, and even help you split expenses with roommates, family and friends.

Here are my three favourite apps to help you spend wisely and get more bang for your buck from your hard-earned money.

Keep an eye on your assets with Myuniverse

The first step towards successfully managing your money is knowing how much of it you have, and that's where MyUniverse comes in.

This do-it-all app from the house of Aditya Birla connects to your netbanking accounts (with support for most Indian banks) with your login details, and gives you an overview of your assets, including cash, investments, credit cards and gold.

You can also track transactions made with your linked credit and debit cards as well as ATM withdrawals, all right within the app.

MyUniverse also allows you to add income and expenses manually, and lets you analyze your spending habits on a graph. And if you want to stay up-to-date on the performance of your portfolio, MyUniverse lets you see how your NSE and BSE equity and mutual fund investments are doing, with useful charts and news for each.

You can also get more detailed reports by using the web app with your browser. While the app is a tad cumbersome to use, it does a great job of pulling all your banking information so you can stay on top of your finances easily.

Track your expenses with Spendee

If you're looking for a simple way to log all your daily expenses, Spendee might be just what you're looking for. Fire up the app and enter a transaction every time you spend or receive money in seconds, and you're done.

Over time, you'll be able to see where your money goes each month, on pretty charts, so you'll know which of your vices to curb — Spendee tells me that I eat out way too often for my own good.

This gorgeous app lets you lock it down with a password to keep your expenses private, reminds you at a set time every day to enter transactions (after you're home from work is usually best), lets you create custom categories with colourful icons for transaction types, and even allows you to export your data as a spreadsheet by email or to your iCloud storage (iOS) or device memory (Android).

Manage group expenses with Splitwise

Got a roommate or two to split the rent with? Splitwise makes it a cinch to divide expenses and track who owes whom, and how much, for everything from utilities to Pizza Night on Sundays.

To get started, simply create a group and add your housemates. You can then log expenses and indicate how you want to split the cost, and settle up later once everyone has paid their share. If you're owed money, you can let the app take on the harrowing task of reminding others in your group to pay up with an automatic email -— messy confrontation avoided!

Splitwise can also help you figure out one-off group expenses, be it a road trip with multiple costs, chipping in for a friend's wedding gift or even a night out where everyone wants to go Dutch. And if you just want to track money borrowed and lent between you and a friend, Splitwise is more than up to the task - just list a mate and add an amount, and you'll never have to worry about money getting in the way of your camaraderie again.

Google working on 5.9-inch phablet with fingerprint sensor: Report

Google may be working on a gigantic 5.9-inch smartphone to be released in November, according to a new report from Android Police. The company is reportedly working with Motorola on the phablet, which will supposedly come with a fingerprint sensor and will launch with major US carriers.

It's unclear what the device will be called, but Google and Motorola are said to be calling it 'Shamu' internally.

READ ALSO: Google Nexus 8 images leaked online

That size is unusually large for a smartphone. It's one inch shy from being the same size as most mini tablets, such as the Google Nexus 7. Samsung's Galaxy Mega, which comes in both 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch screen sizes, and LG G Pro 2 are the only other phablets that compare in size. Most phablets fall into the 5.3-5.7-inch range.

An unnamed source reportedly shared this information with Android Police, and a tipster sent the website a screenshot from Google's issue tracker for developers showing a clear reference to the device. The issue mentioned in the screenshot refers to a bug in Android L, Google's upcoming version of Android that debuted at Google I/O.

Android L only works with Google's Nexus devices, which is part of the reason Android Police believes this could be an unannounced Nexus smartphone. The Android news blog also mentions that the so-called 'Shamu' phablet is running on a Google-built kernel, which is usually only present in Nexus phones and tablets.

A kernel is the central component of an operating system that manages the way software and hardware components interact with one nother. Think of the kernel as a bridge that allows the software and hardware to work together.

Google aims to build the 'perfect' human with Baseline Study

Google may have history's greatest vehicle for exploring the web, but its latest project is much, much more ambitious: it wants to explore the human body. And we mean fully explore it.

The internet search giant is setting out to collect genetic and molecular information from 175 people (and thousands more afterwards, we're told) in order to create a picture of a perfectly healthy human being, according to the The Wall Street Journal.

The project is called Baseline Study and is being headed up by Google X's Dr Andrew Conrad, with the objective to collect data that will help to detect things like heart disease and cancer much earlier on.

Witness the fitness
Needless to say, this could potentially play a big part in Google's wearable tech plans too. Currently that exists at the humble Google Fit platform, which comes packed with Android Wear. It's basic, but a clear indicator that bigger plans are in motion.

But it's not the only one with this idea. Apple is also on a massive health kick right now, announcing its Health Kit app at WWDC, which will not only keep an eye on users' health but allow for that information to be shared their doctor. And how could we forget the ongoing rumours of Apple's fitness-focussed iWatch?

At the same time, Google is also working on a smart contact lens that won't just make you look like rad cyborg, but will monitor your glucose levels too.

Facebook extends WhatsApp acquisition closing by a year

Facebook said in its quarterly report filed on Thursday that it may extend by one year the date by which it is expected to close its $19 billion purchase of mobile messaging startup WhatsApp.

The social networking titan had agreed to pay a termination fee of $1 billion in cash and $1 billion in stock if the purchase did not close by August 19, 2014. It said it expects to extend this date to August 19, 2015 because it will meet conditions allowing the extension. The transaction is still expected to close this year, it added.

Facebook in the report also said the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) dropped its probe into the social networking company over events surrounding its controversial initial public offering.

In the report, Facebook said the regulator in May "notified us that it had terminated its inquiry and that no enforcement action had been recommended by the SEC."

Facebook shares began trading on May 18, 2012, but soon fell below their $38 per share offering price and had lost more than half their value by the middle of August, angering investors.

The launch had been tarnished by technology problems that delayed trading and caused difficulty in processing trades.

Investors also complained they were not told just prior to the IPO that analysts at Facebook's investment banks were cutting their forecasts after learning of the company's internal projections for advertising revenue.

The end of the SEC probe does not affect shareholder litigation against Facebook, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and many banks over the Menlo Park, California-based company's IPO. This litigation remains pending in Manhattan federal court.

Facebook shares were up 9 cents at $75.07 on Nasdaq shortly before the close.

Most UK internet users reject 'porn filters': Report

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 26 Juli 2014 | 21.43

UK internet users are choosing to opt out of the so-called 'pornography filters' introduced at the behest of prime minister David Cameron.

A new report from Ofcom found that on average only 13% of new internet users chose to activate the software provided by the big four ISPs — BT, Virgin Media, Sky and TalkTalk.

Cameron announced the introduction of the filters in July last year when he warned of the impact the internet was having on children. Since then ISPs have been slowly rolling out the filters, offering them first to all new subscribers, with plans to place an "unavoidable choice" in front of all households in the future.

Of the ISPs covered in the report just one - TalkTalk - had more than 10% of users agree to the filters. Four per cent of Virgin Media subscribers signed up; 5% of BT customers; 8% for Sky and a 36% of TalkTalk users.

Although BT, Sky and TalkTalk all began to offer "family friendly network-level filtering" by the end of December last year, Virgin Media has been slower to join the pack and the report found that it still only offered filters to around a third (35%) of new customers.

Ofcom say that this is because the majority of new Virgin Media installations involve an engineer visiting the customer's home - who often ignores or bypasses the filter. Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media's chief executive, said that the company was taking "immediate action" to rectify this.

The filter categories used by all four ISPs are supplied by third-party providers, with BT offering the most comprehensive blocking including site categories such as "social networking" and "fashion and beauty" and "search engines" - categories that may not be deemed dangerous by all parents.

BT, Sky and TalkTalk all offer varying degrees of customization while Virgin - the ISP with the lowest amount of sign-ups - only gives users an on/off choice.

Former Apple CEO John Sculley's Obi Mobiles to go global next year

NEW DELHI: Former Apple CEO John Sculley, who recently launched low-cost smartphone brand Obi in India, plans to take his products to other emerging markets next year after gaining a firm foothold in the local market.

"Our aspirations are to build an international brand with India being the beachhead and to go to all of the emerging markets, learning from our experience here with differentiation around branding and marketing," said Sculley, 75, who famously forced co-founder Steve Jobs out of Apple in 1985.

"We want to be a fast follower in the other markets, but India has to set the pace. In 2015, we will be expanding rapidly world over," he said.

Launched earlier this year, Obi Mobiles will not directly compete with Apple that sells premium devices, but will focus on entry-level smartphone market with Android-based handsets priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 15,000.

Analysts expect 80 million smartphones to be sold in the country this calendar, almost double the number sold in 2013. Sub$200, or about Rs 12,000 models account for 80% of smartphone sales in the country.

Sculley , who was Apple CEO from 1983 to 1993, told ET that Obi was geared to compete in this "commodity market" through advertising, marketing and point-of-sale campaigns, where social media will play a key role. He expects Obi Mobiles to account for around 5% share of the Indian smartphone market. "Culturally, India doesn't give permission to fail," he said.

Before joining Apple, Sculley had a 15 year stint at PepsiCo and is credited with creating the `cola wars' through aggressive marketing to challenge Coca-Cola.

At a time when rivals such as Karbonn, Celkon, China's Xiaomi and Finnish Jolla are launching devices online, Obi Mobiles has decided to focus more on traditional distribution and retail channels in the country and in building after-sales services. It already has 95 service centres.

Sculley said Obi Mobiles plans to launch long-term evolution (LTE) 4G devices after service providers build a critical mass of 4G subscribers.

The company is keen to work with wireless operators as well, he said.

Sculley also said he was looking at acquisitions of credit finance companies in Asia through his Singapore-based IT supply chain firm Inflexionpoint, which owns Obi Mobiles.

Pinterest's workforce is dominated by males

WASHINGTON: Diversity data released by Pinterest, relating to its workforce, has showed that its work space is dominated by whites and males, just like other tech companies.

According to CNET, although 40% of Pinterest's employees are women yet when the numbers are broken down, only 19% occupy leadership positions while 21% are engaged in engineering, product management, and design. The statistics are striking because Pinterest is a social media platform that is used by women primarily.

The figures pertaining to racial diversity are even more skewed with 50% of the company's employees being white. Only 42% are Asian, 2% Hispanic and 1% black.

While admitting that Pinterest needs to work towards improving the ethnic diversity of its work space, Tracy Chou, software engineer and tech lead, wrote in a blog post that the social media platform is focused on getting better.

Europe debates how far to push 'right to be forgotten'

PARIS/BRUSSELS: European regulators have not yet decided whether to try to force search engines such as Google and Microsoft's Bing to scrub results globally when people invoke their "right to be forgotten" in the region.

Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin — who heads France's privacy watchdog and the WP29 group of EU national data protection authorities — said in an interview on Friday that no consensus had yet been reached on what she called a "complicated issue".

The European Union's top court ruled in May that search engines must take down certain results shown under a search of a person's name if the information was "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant".

Although the "right to be forgotten" existed as a concept in European law, the ruling marked the first time companies like Google have been asked to field such requests from the public.

This thrust web companies into the uncomfortable position of making judgment calls on individual cases, balancing rights to personal privacy against the freedom of information.

Google's approach to date has been to remove links only from European versions of its website, such as Google.de in Germany or Google.co.uk in Britain, meaning they would still appear on Google.com.

Microsoft and Yahoo have not yet said how they will handle the issue.

Some national regulators and lawyers have said Google's approach waters down the effectiveness of the ruling given how easy it is to switch between the different versions.

"If you de-list only on Google.fr, for example, the right to be forgotten is much weaker," said Pierrotin, adding that regulators had quizzed the search engines on this topic at a meeting on Thursday.

People have the right to appeal to their national data protection regulator if the search engine refuses their request. To ensure that such appeals are handled consistently, EU data protection regulators plan to draft guidelines by this autumn.

About 50 such appeals have been filed so far across Europe.

"Our aim is not only to come up with operational guidelines for regulators to use when judging these requests and appeals, but also to ensure that the approach is legally sound and can be defended in court," said Pierrotin.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on Friday.

Pandora's box
Whether search engines should notify publishers and media outlets when their stories have been delisted from search results has emerged as another flashpoint.

Google's decision to notify press outlets via email sparked a backlash in early July when the BBC and the Guardian wrote stories about the removals, condemning them as a type of censorship aimed at whitewashing the past.

In the Thursday Q&A session with search engines, regulators pressed the companies to explain the legal basis for such notifications.

"Google's position is that it is required to provide such notifications in the interest of transparency," said Pierrotin.

"Our concern is that these notifications generate a lot of confusion, and in some ways undercut the request itself by bringing people's names back into the open."

She said it remained to be seen whether the regulators would seek to curtail Google's notifications.

"The court's decision opened a Pandora's Box," said Pierrotin. "Everyone involved now has to figure out how to handle these requests in a way that is operationally feasible and legally defensible."

Google, which handles over 90 percent of searches in Europe, had received over 90,000 requests across Europe by July 18, and had accepted over half of them.

French residents submitted the most takedown requests, filing 17,500 with Google, said a person close to the company. Germany generated 16,500 requests, Britain 12,000 requests, Spain 8,000, 7,500 from Italy, and 5,500 from the Netherlands.

Baidu's quarterly net profit up 34.1%

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 25 Juli 2014 | 21.43

SAN FRANCISCO: Baidu, China's biggest internet search company, blew past Wall Street's targets with a 34.1% jump in quarterly net profit, helped by a surge in mobile revenue.

It shares climbed 7.3% in after-hours trading to $219.20, from a close of $204.27 on the Nasdaq.

On Thursday, the company often likened to a Chinese Google said it now gets 30% of its revenue from mobile services, up from around 20% in previous quarters, as online advertisers migrate to mobile devices.

Net income attributable to shareholders rose to 3.55 billion yuan ($571.7 million) in the three months ending June from 2.64 billion yuan a year ago, beating analyst estimates of 2.82 billion yuan, according to Thomson Reuters SmartEstimate.

Revenues for the second quarter rose 58.5% to 11.986 billion yuan from 7.56 billion yuan a year earlier, in line with Baidu's own forecasts of between 11.82 billion yuan and 12.11 billion yuan.

Baidu had struggled to keep up with rivals on mobile devices such as smartphones as they invest in an array of apps to keep users engaged. It is also grappling with intensified competition on its own search turf from the likes of Qihoo 360 Technology and Sohu.com's Sogou search engine, which is 36.5% owned by Tencent Holdings.

Tencent, China's biggest social networking company, dominates smartphone screens with its mobile messaging app WeChat, which had 396 million monthly active users globally as of the end of March.

Also challenging Baidu, e-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding said in June it would fully acquire mobile browser firm UCWeb.

In April, UCWeb and Alibaba jointly launched their own mobile search engine: Shenma, a play on words meaning 'what?' in Chinese.

Acer Q2 PC sales outpaced industry average: CEO

TAIPEI: Taiwan's Acer saw quarter-on-quarter shipments growth that exceeded the PC industry average in the April-June period, the company's chief executive said.

The beleaguered computer maker, which eked out a net profit in the first quarter after three straight quarters of losses, has turned a corner and will remain 'on track' in the third quarter, chief executive Jason Chen told reporters.

The comments were reported by Taiwanese media on Friday and confirmed to Reuters by a company representative.

Products such as the Chromebook, which has seen on-year sales more than double so far this year, Chen said, are the main drivers of the company's optimistic outlook.

Acer will report its second-quarter earnings in the coming weeks.

Chip maker Intel recently issued a sunny revenue forecast amid improving fortunes in PCs worldwide.

Acer shares were trading up 3.25% on Friday, versus a fall of 0.61% in the main TAIEX index.

App to help emergency responders communicate in crisis

NEW YORK: A mobile app from a law enforcement technology firm could soon allow emergency responders from different agencies to communicate seamlessly with each other in a crisis for the first time, sharing files and conducting impromptu conference calls.

BlueLine Grid's applications target what has long been one of the most vexing challenges facing US law enforcement and emergency responders. Communications breakdowns hampered responses to the September 11, 2001 attack in New York and disasters including 2012's Superstorm Sandy.

"It tells you who is near you, who can help you and allows you to communicate effectively with them," said David Riker, chief executive officer of privately held BlueLine Grid.

Because the app relies on wireless connectivity it could fail during a disaster, so it is intended to supplement and not replace traditional emergency communications, Riker said.

The app works on devices running on Google's Android and Apple's iOS operating system.

BlueLine Grid is a law enforcement technology firm co-founded by New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton in 2013, who since cut ties to the company to avoid conflicts of interest before returning to the NYPD in January.

The app would be the first to connect individual responders working in the field, using common standards shared in Android and iOS to enable communications between police, fire and other agencies in different jurisdictions, Riker said.

BlueLine Grid uses similar technology to Skype which is known as over-the-top (OTT) voice and messaging, meaning the services run on top of the wireless network, to solve the problem of interoperability.

Experts say that developing better communications systems is one of the key challenges in ongoing efforts to improve security preparedness.

"We have so much law enforcement in the US - more than 700,000 agencies - and each of them has their own method of collecting and sharing information," said Jim Bueermann, president of the non-profit Police Foundation.

"Finding a platform that is web-based works on mobile platforms and is easy to use is, I think, the holy grail of information sharing," said Bueermann, a former chief of the Redlands, California police department, which is testing an inter-agency data sharing social media app called CopBook.

Earlier this month, John D Cohen, the former head of intelligence for the Department of Homeland Security, joined BlueLine Grid's corporate board.

Apple ebook antitrust case: $450m payout concerns judge

NEW YORK: A US judge on Thursday expressed concern over a proposed $450 million settlement of claims Apple conspired with five publishers to fix e-book prices, saying its provisions could drastically reduce money paid to consumers depending on appeals.

US district judge Denise Cote in Manhattan said she found "most troubling" a clause requiring Apple to pay only $70 million if an appeals court reversed her finding that the company is liable for antitrust violations and sent it back to her for further proceedings.

Speaking on a teleconference, Cote questioned if that would be fair and what might happen if the appeals court reversed her ruling on a minor issue. She also took issue with the lack of any requirement for Apple to pay interest while the appeals go forward.

"I'm concerned about the terms of the settlement," she said.

The comments came a week after 33 US states and territories and lawyers for a class of consumers submitted the settlement for Cote's preliminary approval, and to avoid a scheduled August 25 damages trial.

Cote scheduled the trial after ruling last July that Apple was liable for colluding with publishers to impede e-book competitors such as Amazon.com.

The publishers include Lagardere SCA's Hachette Book Group, News, HarperCollins Publishers, Penguin Group, CBS's Simon & Schuster and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH's Macmillan.

Cote's ruling came in an April 2012 lawsuit by the US Department of Justice and the state attorneys general.

These plaintiffs were expected to seek up to $840 million in damages but reached settlements in which the publishers would provide $166 million to e-book purchasers, reducing Apple's exposure to $674 million.

The size of the Apple settlement depends on the outcome of the company's appeal of Cote's liability finding to the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals.

If Apple loses its appeal, it would pay $400 million to consumers and $50 million to the states and plaintiffs' lawyers.

In contrast, if Apple's appeal is successful but the 2nd Circuit returns the case to Cote for further proceedings or a new trial, the company would pay just $70 million, with $50 million for consumers. If the 2nd Circuit reversed Cote outright and ended the case, Apple would pay nothing.

On Thursday's call, Cote expressed concern that the middle scenario might be unfair to consumers by undervaluing their claims.

Steve Berman, a lawyer for the consumers, told her that such an outcome would result in a 'much bleaker universe' for his clients.

"We thought given that unlikely scenario and the legal risk we would face it would be a good outcome for consumers," he said.

After the call ended, Berman said the parties would consider Cote's concerns. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Vodafone India Q1 revenue up 10% at Rs 10,323 crore

NEW DELHI: Telecom operator Vodafone has reported increase of about 10% in its services revenue at Rs 10,323 crore in first quarter ended June 30, 2014-15.

The company had registered revenue of about Rs 9,375 crore in the April-June period of the last fiscal, 2013-14.

Vodafone India revenue in terms of GBP, however, declined by about 6% due to about 17% dip in value of the rupee against British pound.

During the first quarter, the company's mobile customers increased by 3.3 million taking its total customer base to 169.9 million.

Vodafone India saw increase in internet services by 102% during the quarter, primarily driven by mobile internet customer growth and 46 per cent increase in usage per customer.

SAN FRANCISCO: Leading mobile chipmaker Qualcomm posted higher fiscal third-quarter revenue that beat analysts' expectations as demand in the smartphone market shifts to China and other price-sensitive developing countries.

The chipmaker on Wednesday reported third-quarter revenue of $6.81 billion, up 9% from the year-ago period. Analysts on average had expected third-quarter revenue of $6.52 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Qualcomm had third-quarter net income of $2.24 billion, up 42%. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $1.31. Its non-GAAP earnings per share were $1.44, well above the midpoint of its previous forecast of between $1.15 and $1.25.

Not working with Apple on smartwatch: Swatch

ZURICH: Swiss watchmaker Swatch has denied a media report saying it was working with technology company Apple on a smartwatch, a wearable device with interactive functions.

Technology website VentureBeat said in a report on Wednesday Apple was working with "at least one partner, Swatch" on a smartwatch project, citing an unnamed source.

A spokeswoman for Swatch said on Thursday that the report was unfounded. She further said the only business relationship Swatch Group had with mobile phone makers was as a supplier of integrated circuits and other electronic components.

Signs are mounting that Apple, which landed huge successes with its iPhone mobile phones and iPad tablets, is preparing the launch of an iWatch, following the commercialisation of smartwatches by rivals such as Samsung and LG Electronics.

Swatch shares rose 2% to 510 Swiss francs by 1045 GMT (6:45 a.m. EDT), outperforming a 0.2% higher European sector index.

"I have no doubt that Swatch is up on the back of these press reports - against a rather dull market and sector performance today," Exane BNP Paribas analyst Luca Solca said, adding smartwatches seemed to be at the centre of attention in the investment community.

JPMorgan analysts said in a note the VentureBeat article looked questionable because they would find it surprising if Swatch launched products under its own brands to link them to Apple applications, as the report had suggested.

"One of (Swatch chief executive Nick) Hayek's main concerns over smartwatches, repeatedly stated in analysts conference calls in the last six months, is the possible dependence on software and applications from other companies," they said.

Hayek told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday he was not interested in teaming up with a tech group to develop a smartwatch.

OnePlus chalking out India entry plans

NEW DELHI: OnePlus, the Chinese device company that has made waves with its economically priced high-end phone, OnePlus One, has said that it is interested in the Indian market.

OnePlus, a company founded by ex-Oppo executives, had launched what it calls the '2014 flagship killer' phone, OnePlus One in May with a starting price of $299. The phone is available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States. OnePlus sells the phone under an invite-only program with new owners getting the ability to invite other people.

While the company does not ship the phone to India, it says it is seeing tremendous interest from the region. In a forum post, Carl Pei, director of OnePlus Global, said that many customers in India were purchasing the phone and shipping it to the US, and then asking a friend to bring it over or trans-shipping it. He stated that India ranked number 8 in terms of web traffic, outweighing many of the company's launch countries.

"It's safe to say that we're interested in India. Being such a young company, we also know that India is a huge challenge. We're all about creating a great user experience from end to end. We understand that there are lots to learn, consider and set up before we can officially launch in this vast country," he added.

Pei has assured OnePlus fans that the company will be as transparent as possible and keep Indian enthusiasts posted about its progress. While he did not give a definite time frame, it surely suggests that the company is keen to enter the Indian market and is currently working on a launch strategy.

For those unaware, the OnePlus One smartphone is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor. It has 3GB RAM, and comes in 16GB and 64GB internal storage variants. It sports a 5.5-inch full-HD screen, a rear 13MP camera with F2.0 aperture and Sony image sensor, 5MP front camera, 3100mAh battery, 4G LTE (including the Indian band 40), NFC and stereo speakers. The phone weighs 162 grams and is 8.9mm thick. While the shell of the phone is made using plastic, wood, Kevlar and denim backcovers will be available as accessories.

The Indian market is witnessing the entry of a number of Chinese players including the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo and Gionee. Xiaomi recently launched its high-end smartphone, Mi 3, at a price of Rs 13,999, challenging local and global players that sell similar phones at a relatively higher price point.

Apple gains in China as Samsung slips

BEIJING: The mobile industry has long held that Samsung's broad range of mobile devices makes it nimble in changing markets, while Apple loses out by rigidly sticking to its high-end gadgets.

But manufacturers' recent earnings reports challenge those assumptions, at least in China, the world's biggest mobile market — where the roll-out of the next-generation 4G wireless network has been touted as a booster for smartphone makers seeking growth as demand in advanced countries falters.

Apple's latest quarterly results showed sales of its high-end phones in China grew at nearly twice the pace analysts had expected. Meanwhile, budget offerings from Chinese firms won at the cheaper end, effectively squeezing industry leader Samsung Electronics.

Even as Apple posted strong China sales, the South Korean tech giant warned this month that quarterly earnings could drop 25% due to an inventory build-up of cheaper phones and weaker demand for 3G products in China.

That could suggest that Samsung's strategy of offering everything to counter every price point may actually have left it stranded between being a price competitive brand and a premium gadget seller. By contrast, Apple has studiously cultivated its high-end aura, and its iPhones and iPads continue to command a higher price tag on average than its rivals.

Samsung has strong brand loyalty in China, but charges 60-100% more than Chinese made phones with similar features, said Tom Kang, an analyst at Counterpoint Research in Seoul. "Even though they have a brand premium, that's a bit too much."

Samsung declined to comment for this article.

Samsung's high-end smartphones and tablets such as its Galaxy S range, its answer to the iPhone and iPad, accounted for just a quarter of its January-March sales volume in China, while devices priced below 500 yuan ($80.75) made up the vast majority, according to data firm Canalys.

At the same time, Samsung has come under pressure from the rise of Chinese budget handset makers like Xiaomi, which this week released the Mi 4, its new 1,999 yuan handset.

Underscoring the challenges Samsung faces, it had just one model in China's top-5 best sellers in May and June — with its big-screen Galaxy Note 3 tied in fifth place with a Lenovo Group phone, according to Counterpoint.

China surprises
Apple said this week its third quarter revenue was buoyed by unexpectedly strong results in China, where iPhone sales jumped nearly 50% in April-June.

"China, honestly, was surprising to us ... we thought it would be strong, but it went well past what we thought. The unit growth was really off the charts across the board," CEO Tim Cook told analysts on Tuesday.

China Mobile's 4G customer growth has been accelerating after a tepid start in February. The number of 4G subscribers rose to nearly 14 million in June, up from just 1.3 million at the end of February.

"A lot of China Mobile customers have been holding on to old phones, so when the high-speed 4G came out they naturally switched to a 5S or 5C and upgraded. This trend will only become more apparent with the iPhone 6's release," said CK Lu, an analyst at Gartner.

China Mobile, the world's biggest carrier by subscribers, declined to disclose the current breakdown of its 4G subscribers, but its chairman, Xi Guohua, said in March that "most of our 1.34 million 4G users are using an iPhone."

For Samsung, the widely anticipated 4G roll-out has delivered a mixed result.

"The roll-out of 4G helped both Samsung and Apple initially, but the operator and regulatory body's ... policies had recently been unfavorable towards Samsung as the 3G demand and subsidy dropped," said Counterpoint's Kang. "Samsung had been selling quite a lot of volume of 3G phones to Chinese operators but that demand dropped sharply. The recent pro-4G policies that penalized 3G vendors ... was not favourable to Samsung."

Samsung said earlier this month its China sales were hurt by price competition in the low to mid-tier sectors as well as tepid sales of 3G devices, as buyers wait to buy high-end 4G phones.

iPhone 6 due
As China Mobile expands services and smaller rivals China Unicom and China Telecom prepare to launch their preferred competing 4G technology, handset makers are bracing for more surprises — with new product plans including Apple's widely expected bigger-screen iPhone.

"Right now, what we've seen is just a small part of the users who want to upgrade to 4G," said Lu. "The broader set of consumers, the relatively mainstream ones who want a large screen, are still waiting for the iPhone 6. So when that comes, the effect on high-end brands like Samsung will be even bigger."

Kang at Counterpoint also said an iPhone with a large screen would "go directly into Samsung's territory" and Samsung may respond with something unique, such as a curved display.

Apple is confident it can gain further traction in China thanks to its relationship with China Mobile and an army of some 150,000 Chinese developers making apps for the local App Store.

"They continue to do the roll-out," Apple chief financial officer Luca Maestri told Reuters this week, referring to China Mobile's 4G network. "They continue to add points of sale, they're starting to do more marketing activities, so we think we have a really good runway in front of us with China Mobile."

Qualcomm struggles to collect royalties in China, stock falls

SAN FRANCISCO: Qualcomm's outlook for the September quarter was below Wall Street's expectations and its shares fell on Wednesday after the leading mobile chipmaker said it was having trouble collecting royalties in China.

A new high-speed 4G network in China is driving fresh demand for smartphones with leading-edge technology, but Qualcomm has also faced legal and regulatory problems there, including an ongoing investigation by the country's antitrust regulator.

Now Qualcomm is struggling to collect licensing revenue from some device makers in China, including a growing number of local manufacturers the US chipmaker has done little or no business with in the past.

"There was some impact in the quarter that we just reported in Q3 and we expect the impact will be larger in the next quarter and potentially for a number of quarters until we can get these things resolved," Qualcomm President Derek Aberle said in an interview.

While most of Qualcomm's revenue comes from selling chips that enable phones to communicate with carrier networks, most of its profit comes from licensing patents for its widespread CDMA cellphone technology.

Qualcomm has had royalty disputes in the past in China and the recent proliferation of local companies making low-cost gadgets for Chinese consumers is complicating the picture.

"There's a lot of new guys ramping up new 4G phones and tablets over there," said Evercore analyst Mark McKechnie. "They have a lot of licensees there already that are paying them, but this is going to be a pretty big challenge for the company in the coming years."

With smartphone shipments tapering off in wealthy markets like the United States, China has become a key market for Qualcomm.

The ongoing investigation by China's anti-monopoly regulator could lead to fines of more than $1 billion. It concerns Qualcomm's licensing business as well as interactions between its licensing business and its chipset business, Aberle later told analysts on a conference call.

The investigation is making it harder to negotiate new 4G licenses with manufacturers in China, he said.

The chipmaker reported third-quarter revenue of $6.81 billion, up 9% from the year-ago period. It said revenue in the fourth quarter, which ends in September, would be between $6.5 billion and $7.4 billion, with a midpoint of about $6.95 billion.

Analysts on average had expected third-quarter revenue of $6.52 billion and fourth-quarter revenue of $7.15 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Third-quarter net income was $2.24 billion, up 42%. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $1.31. Its non-GAAP earnings per share were $1.44, well above the midpoint of its previous forecast of between $1.15 and $1.25.

Qualcomm shares were down 4.72% in extended trading after closing up 0.09% at $81.60 on Nasdaq.

PayPal enrolls 'tens of thousands' customers in Nigeria

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 23 Juli 2014 | 21.43

LAGOS: PayPal has signed up "tens of thousand" of Nigerians in its first week of operating in Africa's biggest economy, with consumers already purchasing items from Britain, China and the United States via its online platform, a company official said.

E-commerce remains in its infancy in most of Africa but is growing exponentially with the advent of online retailers such as Jumia, partly owned by South African phone operator MTN, and a growing middle class with money to spend.

Citizens of Africa's most populous nation could not buy goods directly from foreign merchants before the launch by PayPal, the payments unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc.

"We have seen great uptake by Nigerians ... in terms of coverage," Malvina Goldfeld, PayPal's head of business development for sub-Saharan Africa, said in Lagos on Tuesday.

PayPal entered Nigeria and 10 other nations last month, providing online payment alternatives for consumers via mobile phones or PCs in markets often blighted by financial fraud. The new markets bring the number of countries PayPal serves to 203.

Goldfeld said that Paypal secured a few deals with electronics suppliers in China and Dubai ahead of its launch and that it had partnered with Nigerian lender First Bank, which has more than 10.5 million customers.

Electronics and fashion

PayPal launched its platform in South Africa four years ago, Kenya last year and now Nigeria, Goldfeld said, giving the company access to shoppers across 40 sub-saharan African countries.

Goldfeld said the biggest interest has been in products from the United States, Britain and China, adding: "People are buying everything ... (but) there's definitely a concentration in electronics and fashion."

Online retailer Jumia told Reuters in April it had 100,000 Nigerian customer accounts and sales were increasing by 15% a month

However, worries over internet security and online fraud have held back e-commerce growth in Nigeria, where 63 million people have active internet data subscriptions but only 1% of them make online transactions, First Bank said, noting that online purchases are expected to reach $1 billion this year.

Though challenges remain - including abysmal infrastructure, port delays, other supply chain woes and the task of persuading shoppers to trust websites with their bank details - Goldfeld says PayPal's reach will help to speed improvements.

"A lot of the merchants that we work with ... already ship to Nigeria. I think that the growth of e-commerce will push the logistics customers to up their game," she said.

Microsoft confirms it axed Surface Mini tablet

In a line buried deep inside its latest earnings report, Microsoft offered an admission that it axed the Surface Mini.

In a line buried deep inside its latest earnings report, Microsoft offered an admission that it axed the Surface Mini.
"Current year cost of revenue included Surface inventory adjustments resulting from our transition to newer generation devices and a decision to not ship a new form factor," read the illuminating item under a section titled "Computer and Gaming Hardware."
The smaller Surface launch was said to have been canceled at the last minute as Microsoft felt quality wasn't up to snuff. It went ahead and unveiled the Surface Pro 3 solo, though it couldn't escape the Mini's specter. The device, thought to measure in the 7-inch range, makes several appearances in the Pro 3's user guide.
Per usual, Microsoft didn't offer on-the-market Surface sales figures in its earnings report, and tablet revenue sat at $409 million. This is down from the previous quarter and, as Microsoft said, partially the result of not launching a new Surface size.
