US can spy on your data on Google, Apple servers

LONDON: A piece of legislation that permits US agencies to snoop on foreign nationals by hacking into cloud servers of Google and Apple, has sent alarm bells ringing among privacy campaigners, a British media report says.

The renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), would grant the US government the right to spy on anyone using the internet storage facilities provided by Google and Apple.

One of the most disquieting provisions of the FISA justifies snooping even without the fig leaf of a threat to national security. Officials could pry into foreign individuals' cloud data for purely political reasons as well.

Simply stated, it means that any non-US citizen who stores data on the cloud services operated by Amazon, Google and Apple, could open themselves up to a probe by US authorities, the Daily Mail reports.

Google, responding to media requests, said: "It is possible for the US government (and European governments) to access certain types of data via their law enforcement agencies. We think this kind of access to data merits serious discussion and more transparency."

Cloud computing allows internet users to store their information and data in an network server as opposed to a physical memory stick or tangible location on their hard drive or on their smartphones.

FISA was actually put into place under President George W Bush in 2008, and it was quietly renewed in December 2012 under President Barack Obama's purview.

The legislation permits organs of the US government, the CIA, the FBI, and Pentagon's National Security Agency to look at any information they would like that is saved on cloud servers.

The blogsite Slate quoted Caspar Bowden, who co-wrote the report which is now being examined by the European Union, as saying that the legislation has been so gravely ignored by European government officials.

"It's like putting a mind control drug in the water supply, which only affects non-Americans," he said.

BB10: Why analysts greeting launch with downgrades

Research In Motion Ltd's glitzy unveiling of the long-delayed line of BlackBerry smartphones on Wednesday and a new corporate name failed to impress Wall Street analysts, with at least three downgrading the company's stock.

RIM, which renamed itself BlackBerry, showcased two devices, Z10 and Q10, running on its new BB10 operating system as the smartphone pioneer looks for a fresh start.

"Despite recent enthusiasm for RIM's new BB10 devices, we see limited scope for traction in the hypercompetitive smartphone market," Credit Suisse analysts wrote in a note.

RIM faces an uphill struggle in terms of gaining smartphone market share, the Credit Suisse analysts said, downgrading the stock to "underperform" from "neutral".

RIM's Nasdaq-listed shares were set to open 3 percent lower on Thursday. They closed 12 percent down on Wednesday at $13.78. Its Toronto-listed shares also fell by the same margin to close at C$13.86.

RIM launched its first BlackBerry in 1999 and quickly cornered the market for secure emails, but its market share plummeted after customers jumped ship to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices using Google Inc's Android technology.

Analysts at Evercore Partners said they did not expect the new BB10 devices to cause a stir among customers, and cut their rating to "equal weight" from "underweight".

"The new hardware and operating system is a dramatic improvement versus RIMM's older products but expect a muted consumer response due to RIMM's damaged brand image," they said.

Barclays Capital analysts wrote in a note that RIM had the best possible device launch it could have hoped for, but there were many challenges ahead.

The analysts said average sales prices might be too high for many emerging market users and raised questions about how quickly businesses would adopt the new devices.

Analysts were also concerned about the delay in the launch of the devices in the United States. RIM said the devices would not be available in the country until March.

National Bank Financial analysts said the delay was very disappointing since the US enterprise, government and consumer is the most important market for the Z10.

The Z10 touchscreen device will be the first of the two models to hit the market, with a rollout that starts in Britain on Thursday.

Google Maps makes Grand Canyon virtual trek

SAN FRANCISCO: Google Maps opened a virtual path to the wonders of the Grand Canyon by adding panoramic images gathered by hikers with Android-powered camera systems strapped to their backs.

"These beautiful, interactive images cover more than 75 miles (120 kilometers) of trails and surrounding roads," Google Maps product manager Ryan Falor said in a blog post.

"Take a walk down the narrow trails and exposed paths of the Grand Canyon: hike down the famous Bright Angel Trail, gaze out at the mighty Colorado River, and explore scenic overlooks in full 360- degrees."

The pictures were gathered by Google Maps team members who hiked the rocky terrain with 40-pound (18-kilogram) backpacks holding a camera system, "enduring temperature swings and a few muscle cramps along the way," Falor said.

People can view the photos when visiting online maps of the Grand Canyon.

Google's Street View team has been increasingly going off-road to gather pictures to show real scenes from places on maps.

Last year, Google Maps added pictures from Cambridge Bay in the Canadian Arctic and images from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

Portable music players’ sales fall in India

KOLKATA: Sales of portable music players, including Apple's iconic iPod, fell for the first time in India last year, with more consumers opting for mobile phones and tablets as single converged devices for all their entertainment needs.
According to sales data by top music player makers such as Sony and Philips, the demand for portable music players plunged by up to 25% in 2012, a year when smartphones and tablets became both cheaper and technologically superior devices than before for listening to music.

As a result, electronics chain Next has reduced focus on this segment while leading technology retailer The Mobile Store has stopped selling iPods and other portable music devices altogether in its outlets due to the plunging demand.

"The convergence of multimedia such as music, videos and photography in mobiles and tablets is becoming a big phenomenon in India as entry-to-mid segment smartphones and tablets are becoming more feature-rich than ever before, which will only further accelerate the decline in sales of music players," said Himanshu Chakrawarti, chief executive of The Mobile Store.

Sony India has reported a decline of almost 50% in sales of its Walkman portable music players, compared with the 2011 numbers. Sales fell for Philips as well, with the Dutch company on Tuesday announcing its global decision to completely exit the audio-visual business, which was largely driven by portable MP3 and MP4 players. Sales of Apple's range of iPods too fell for the first time in India in 2012, retailers said.

The launch of the fifth-generation iPod Touch during the festive season did not help much since it was priced at Rs 23,900 onwards. At the same time, the price of the iPhone 4 dropped to about Rs 26,000. Consumers appeared to prefer the more aspirational iPhone, even though it's a much older device, a store manager of an Apple premium reseller in Mumbai said.

The trend is taking shape in India almost two years after it was first noticed in developed economies such as the US and Europe. According to a study by market intelligence firm IHS, global personal media player shipments are set to fall to 126.8 million units in 2015, declining at a CAGR of 6.8% since 2010, compared with a growth of 38.7% during the previous fiveyear period from 2004 through 2009.

Market leader Apple has been reporting a global fall in sales of iPods for the past two years. For the quarter ended December 2012, Apple announced that it sold 12.7 million iPods during the quarter compared with 15.4 million in the year-ago quarter.

In response to an email on the decline in iPod sales in India, an Apple spokesman from London denied to share countryspecific details. He referred to Apple's CEO Tim Cook's call last week with analysts where he accepted that iPods sales had been cannibalised by iPhones and iPads.

"I see cannibalisation as a huge opportunity for us. One, our base philosophy is to never fear cannibalisation. If we do, somebody else will just cannibalise it and so we never fear it. We know that iPhone has cannibalised some iPod business. It doesn't worry us, but it's done that," Cook had said in the call.

As per industry estimates, Apple has about 50% share in the Indian portable music player, with the balance controlled by Philips, Sony and scores of Chinese and local smaller brands. The size of the total market is about . 80 crore.

Mobile phones: The biggest challenge
The latest smartphones are more than adept at convergence. Used with an external display and keyboard, a powerful smartphone can even replace a laptop. These days, smartphones are also replacing compact cameras, projectors, presentation devices, workout buddies and standalone GPS devices.

Sales of compact camera declined by 5% in India last year after growing by 40% between 2009 and 2011, for instance, because more consumers started using smartphones to take photos. Similarly, Nokia and Samsung are also challenging the notion of single-purpose music players by building up their own music service , which is available on their smartphones.
On several devices, users can legally download unlimited songs for free. Nokia, for instance boasts of the world's largest repository of digital music with over 7.7 million songs while Samsung has created a local collection of English and Bollywood numbers with more than 2.5 lakh songs.

Nokia is offering its music service across models like feature phones and smartphones and recently launched a new enhanced service Nokia Music + which allows unlimited downloads and lyric streaming. Samsung Mobile vice-president Asim Warsi said the company would focus on its music service in India as consumption of music on mobiles and tablets was on the rise. Though the music service is available only on the Galaxy series of smartphones at present, Samsung too plans to offer it across its range of mobile devices.

Innovation: The mantra for survival
Philips India president (consumer lifestyle) ADA Ratnam said the category needs significant innovation to improve sales.
"The lightweight MP3 players are still selling since they offer full sound and great battery life, which usually are hindrances for users who listen to music on their mobile phones," Ratnam said. Philips recently launched a new range of players with calorie tracker, ereader and touchscreen.

Sony India's sales head Sunil Nayyar said the company would continue to focus on portable players and offer newer features. The company has just announced the launch of portable players with features such as Near Field Communication, which allows seamless transfer of data or pairing with other NFC-enabled devices. Some devices are also waterproof and wire-free, so they can be used while swimming, jogging or cycling in the rain.

Standalone music players will have a fighting chance of survival only so long as they continue to do things that a smartphone cannot, analysts said.

Google: Internet's navigation tools drive economies

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 30 Januari 2013 | 21.43

SAN FRANCISCO: Fresh from unveiling detailed online maps of North Korea, Google touted studies showing that internet age navigation tools boost the economic engines of nations.

The global "geospatial industry" brings in $270 billion in annual revenue and companies in the sector pay more than $90 billion in wages each year, according to a report by economic consulting firm Oxera.

Firms working with global satellite positioning, digital maps and navigation systems are a "promising engine for economic activity now" and will grow by 30 percent annually, according to Oxera.

"If policymakers, private companies, researchers and consumers continue to invest in this emerging industry, we can expect this technology to continue driving growth in the broader global economy," Oxera said in its report.

Geospatial technology has ripple effects ranging from making it easier for someone with a smartphone to find a nearby cafe to efficiently routing shipments or figuring out the best place to open a shop or place a billboard.

Oxera estimated that businesses worldwide have saved $17.3 billion due to time saved by using navigation technology and that people had a total of 1.1 billion hours lopped from their travel time.

Charlie Hale, of Google Maps' public policy team, described the geospatial industry as companies dealing in maps and navigation devices.

Major shipping firm UPS uses modern navigation technology to plot efficient delivery routes, taking into account weather, altitude, road pitch and myriad other factors, according to Hale.

Governments tap into mapping technology for a range of needs, from disaster responses to urban planning and improving mass transit systems.

"The key is that we shouldn't take it for granted," Hale said. "Policy makers need to support making map data available and private companies like ours need to keep investing in this."

Companies and countries with modern map skills and data have economic and competitive advantages, he argued, citing the Oxera study and a US-focused study by Boston Consulting Group.

"It is like any technology transition," Hale said. "If you were a small business 50 years ago, your marketing could be the yellow pages and those with TV ads had competitive advantage."

Now, businesses that are easy to find on online maps have an edge.

Evidence is even growing that people with better grasps of digital era mapping and navigation technologies earn higher incomes, according to Hale, who confessed to being the son of a geography teacher in Maine.

"It is about being able to use satellite imagery, GPS, all the tools the average global worker is going to have to rely on," he said.

Smartphones, tablets boost Lenovo's profit

BEIJING: Personal computer maker Lenovo Group said its quarterly profit rose 34 per cent to a record high on strong sales of smartphones and tablet computers.

The company, vying with Hewlett-Packard to become the world's biggest PC maker, said it earned $205 million in the three months ending in December. Revenue rose 12 per cent to $9.4 billion, also a record.

The results reflect a rapid shift in global consumer tastes toward mobile services. That is forcing traditional technology leaders to scramble to roll out new products and diversify into services as well as hardware.

Sales by Lenovo's mobile and digital home unit soared 77 per cent to $998 million, though that was only 11 per cent of total revenue.

The company said its smartphone business in China was profitable for the first time and handsets were launched in India, Indonesia, Russia and other markets. Shipments of media tablets rose 77 per cent to 800,000 units.

"The strong performance of our mobile Internet business is a significant strength that we believe will help us drive sustainable growth even in challenging market conditions,'' said chief financial officer Wong Wai Ming in a conference call with reporters.

Lenovo shipped 9.4 million smartphones during the quarter, all but about 400,000 of them in China, according to chairman Yang Yuanqing. He said the smartphone business outside China is "still in the first stage'' and Lenovo needs to invest to gain market share before focusing on profitability.

Revenues in the bigger but slower-growing PC market rose 7 per cent to $7.9 billion.

Lenovo, which is based in Beijing and in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, warned PC demand ``remains challenging'' due to weakening global economic conditions but said it plans to expand its cloud, services and other businesses.

In its home China market, PC shipments rose 2 percent, down from the previous quarter's 8 per cent. Lenovo said that was still better than an industry-wide decline of 2 per cent in China, raising its market share by 1.4 percentage points to a record 36.7 per cent.

Shipments in the United States and the rest of North America rose 11 per cent over a year earlier.

Lenovo released a new version of its ThinkPad notebook computer, the X1 Carbon, in August that it said was lighter and quicker to mimic the convenience of a tablet. Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad brand with IBM's personal computer unit in 2005.

How mobile phone makers are trying to save music

With CDs in danger of going the way of the tape, receding into 'a relic of the past' territory, music labels are relying on an unlikely ally to pull them through — mobile phone handset manufacturers.

When Samsung launched its first dual SIM mobile phone in India, the reigning market leader — Nokia — was caught on the back foot. But even as the Finnish handset maker struggled to play catch up to technological innovation, it had spent years in the seemingly Quixotic task of tying up with music labels both global and local, viewing this as a potential revenue source. Nokia today speaks with pride about its extensive library: 7.7 million tracks across 22 genres. What it's less enthusiastic to talk about is the revenues from the store, but more on that in a bit. As of today, Nokia stands a better chance to distribute music in India, because of the reach it enjoys in the sub-continent — way higher than Apple's iTunes' music store, which had an official launch in the country only in December last year.

At least prima facie, music is a good bet for a mobile handset maker. According to a report released by KPMG early last year the Indian music industry achieved revenues of Rs 9 billion in 2011, registering a growth of 5% over 2010. The report also pointed to the continual shift of music from physical to digital formats. Jehil Thakkar, head of Media and Entertainment, KPMG India says physical music continues to decline as digital grows. "OEMs are working as a catalyst to help consumers get started on digital music," explains Thakkar. He feels there is still time for the ecosystem to mature as music libraries of OEMs continue to grow. Some of the music labels we spoke too were unanimous about the growth of digital music in India and the role played by OEMs in pushing this. R Madhusudhan, VP - digital music Sa Re Ga Ma says, "The biggest success has been achieved because of efforts taken by operators and device manufacturers. A lot of people are accessing music through mobile phones."

Nokia began this journey in 2005. It launched devices pre-loaded with music and claims to have tried to build this as a USP of sorts. While the popular snake game was the first piece of content it offered, the company decided music would be a better strategy for the future. Viral Oza, marketing director, Nokia India says "Customers are not happy with the quality of pirated music. They want access to genuine music which is of much superior quality." In its current avatar, the songs on the Nokia store are DRM free — making it easier to download and distribute. "You have to understand the 'wow' factor this gives youngsters. It highly improves the person's social currency," says Oza.

Currently customers, who purchase a Nokia device are offered free access to the store either for a period of three or six months. If customers want to continue, they can buy vouchers with prices ranging from Rs 50 for a week to Rs 250 for three months. Nokia is characteristically tightlipped about the extent of repeat purchase.

Sanjit Chatterjee, director marketing & strategy, Reve Systems, a mobile VoIP company is not too sure whether Nokia customers will come back after the initial free period. "Paid VAS is still not very popular. Unlike iTunes store which is more of a shopping portal where customers can shop for a lot of things including entertainment, Nokia Music Store is just music. So the stickiness is likely to be less," says Chatterjee.

However, Nokia's competitors are not ones to sit by idly. They are all forging agreements with labels and making songs part of their offering. Samsung has tied up with Hungama.com to make music available to its customers. A Samsung user can access music either through Samsung's WAP site or a new service under the 'My Music' vertical. Unlike Nokia, all songs downloaded by a Samsung user is paid for and not free, unless offered as such by the content provider. Sarfaraz Nawaz Alam Borah, lead -mobile applications & services, Samsung Electronics says, "Our focus on music started three years ago and today about 30%-40%of our VAS revenues come from music."

Three months ago, indigenous brand Micromax launched 'Mymicromax.com' an entertainment portal which can be accessed through the mobile phone and according to Manoj Gupta, GM - VAS marketing, Micromax Infomatics, the portal already gets 10 lakh page views a day and 30,000 downloads of different kind of VAS including music. Gupta says today 17%-20% of their total revenues come from VAS which includes ringtones, music videos and music tracks. However, Gupta says for the space to mature a lot of support is required from the music providers as well as the mobile phone operators. "Music labels ask for a minimum guarantee, which is difficult to give. We are pushing for a revenue sharing model, but there is still some way to go," he shares. Among mobile operators, Vodafone is the only one to offer good terms for partnership says Gupta.

Sony Mobile is also going the pre-loaded way. While the company refused to share its actual plans, Sony has already outlined a strategy whereby its mobile phones will harness the equity of all its devices including Walkman. Sources close to the company claim that by April this year, Sony will launch a couple of handsets with pre-loaded music.

Not content with being passive suppliers of music, mobile phone companies count among the major backers of festivals. The soon to be held Fly Music Festival featuring everyone from dinosaur rockers like Deep Purple and the surviving members of The Doors to relatively recent artists like KT Tunstall and Mastodon is being sponsored by Micromax. Nokia claims to be going one further creating Nokia Music Theatre complete with an album named Asha out on Universal Music.

According to KPMG's Thakkar, for monetisable digital music to get a major push, there needs to be a widespread rollout of 3G and 4G networks. "Data speeds will increase access to music and impulse purchase will go up," predicts Thakkar.

Similarly he says there has to be revenue sharing between telcos and content owners, because at this point the labels have no choice but to approach handset manufacturers and operators to distribute digital music. Smartphones that enable connectivity to the internet are further likely to push adoption says Madhusudhan. Today for Sa Re Ga Ma, more than 80% of sales come from digital music and only 20% from physical formats. He admits that partnerships such as the one with Nokia also help curb piracy to a great extent. And that's the unfortunate truth of the business: labels may soon have no choice but to partner handset brands. The only other option is a disturbing trend that's rife through small town India at present. Young people armed with enormous memory cards cram them to bursting with several gigabytes of pirated music, obtained from a friendly neighbourhood mobile shop all for a paltry sum; an arrangement in which neither label, operator nor handset maker stand to profit.

IT companies welcome new H-1B visa proposals

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 Januari 2013 | 21.43

LOS ANGELES/SAN FRANCISCO: The first big political push for an overhaul of US immigration laws in more than five years holds out some promise for employers who have long complained that the current system is broken and inhibits hiring.

From farmers who cannot find Americans to pick their crops to technology firm who need more engineers from abroad, the bipartisan plan from eight US senators offered solutions like a "workable" program for seasonal farm labor and a commitment to "attracting and keeping the world's best and brightest."

"We are encouraged by the momentum on these important issues," said Microsoft general counsel and executive vice president Brad Smith.

Companies and business groups of all stripes have come out in favor of immigration reform, hoping to tap the immigrant labor force that has long been a key to growth of the US economy.

But Smith said Microsoft needs to see the details of the legislation, which has not yet been crafted, and that it hopes the reform will expand the so-called H-1B visa system for highly skilled workers.

The government now offers a quota of 65,000 H-1B visas per year, a number unusually met in a few weeks of applications and far fewer than the US technology sector says it needs to innovate and remain competitive.

The eight senators said that any immigrant who receives an advanced degree in the United States in science, technology, engineering or math (collectively known as STEM), should be given a green card, shorthand for legal residence and work permit.

"It makes no sense to educate the world's future innovators and entrepreneurs only to ultimately force them to leave our country at the moment they are most able to contribute to our economy," the senators said.

The proposal from the senators, who include Arizona Republican John McCain and New York Democrat Charles Schumer, goes so far as to offer a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants. Schumer said he hoped a bill would pass Congress as early as mid-year.

But it also offers provisions to make legal immigration more efficient and to bolster an employment verification system to help companies know if they are hiring illegal migrants.

Inspections test companies
While the US government's "E-Verify" program is now only required in some states, a mandatory beefed-up system that takes the burden off companies for detecting fraud in identity documents and places it on the government might be welcomed.

A one-step process in which the employer enters data and awaits a government approval "could be a very effective system," said Eleanor Pelta, head of immigration law at the Washington law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

Several high-profile companies, including burrito chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, have been investigated after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) audits turned up problems with their employment paperwork. ICE started investigations at nearly 4,000 workplaces in fiscal 2012.

Chipotle moved to E-Verify almost two years ago after ICE audits revealed it had hired hundreds of illegal immigrants. Company spokesman Chris Arnold said that mandating a similar system would be "pretty much moot" for the 1,300-restaurant company.

While passage of the proposal into law is far from assured, farm organizations may have most reason to be encouraged, given its emphasis on meeting the needs of the agriculture industry.

"I see this absolutely as our best opportunity that we've had in a generation to get ... a solution to our immigration problems," said Charles Conner, president and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives.

In the nation's largest food-producing and exporting state, California, farmers said they hoped immigration legislation would catch up to the reality of America's food supply.

"Many of the people who tend to the food we eat are not properly documented," said Paul Wenger, president of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Apple: How T-Mobile’s rebellion may add to troubles

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple's shareholders have been hit by one of the bloodiest weeks in the history of the stock, but wider fallout from such weakness might be more important to the long-term value of their investments. While Apple's iPhones, iPads and Macs remain gold standards, signs the company is losing some of its edge in the smartphone market suggest its clout with business partners could wane. Recent comments from executives at phone carriers and component suppliers show they see room for at least some shift in the balance of power.

In particular, a move by No. 4 US mobile service provider T-Mobile USA to stop subsidising smartphones around the time it starts selling the iPhone in three months time may put pressure on Apple, especially if other carriers follow the example. US phone companies mostly subsidise handsets in return for two-year contracts. If customers start paying the full price for an iPhone, they might look for cheaper alternatives.

Asked whether carriers are now in a better position to negotiate lower prices with smartphone makers such as Apple, Fran Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications, said having four strong platforms - Apple, Android, Windows and BlackBerry - is leading to more competitive pricing. "The more operating systems we have to compete in this area the better the competition," he told Reuters. Verizon Communications is the majority owner of Verizon Wireless, the biggest US mobile provider.

Lower gross margins

Apple sold a record 48 million iPhones in the December quarter, but its share of the overall market is expected to peak this year at 22 percent and become dependent on repeat business from loyal customers unless it accepts lower margins by making low-cost iPhones, according to ABI Research. Meanwhile, arch-rival Samsung Electronics, with a range of handsets has overtaken Apple as the world's top smartphone seller. If Apple's customers and suppliers, let alone rivals, smell blood and take a much harder line in negotiations, it could erode Apple's gross margins, which slipped to 38.6 percent in the last quarter from 44.7 percent a year ago.

Apple declined to comment on its business with partners, although when CEO Tim Cook was asked on an earnings conference call last July about subsidies potentially being reduced, he said the total subsidy carriers pay is fairly small compared with revenues over a two-year contract. He also said carriers told him the iPhone has many advantages, including lower churn rates and the ability to sell shared data plans for other Apple products such as the iPad.

Certainly, Apple's astounding run over the past decade and ever rising volume of iPhone sales have given it unrivaled power to negotiate with wireless carriers and component suppliers. Last week's results fell short of Wall Street's estimates, sending Apple's share price down more than 14 percent. That underscored signs Apple is coming back down to earth, transforming from undisputed Wall Street darling to a more normal - if enormous and hugely profitable - company.

A less powerful Apple could be welcomed by telecommunications carriers and component suppliers that have grown accustomed to the tough terms Apple was able to exact thanks to its massive scale and leadership in the market. Wireless carriers that once agreed to unfavourable contracts and hefty subsidies still cannot live without Apple, but experts say they could have more leeway in the future if Samsung and other device makers continue to grab market share.

Has beens

Subsidies have been a major driver of the iPhone's success and in boosting Apple's earnings. Analysts estimate operators pay a roughly $400 subsidy for each iPhone they sell in comparison with subsidies of $250 to $300 for other smartphones. But that may already be changing.

T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, has not disclosed the details of its deal with Apple, but CEO John Legere said it will not be as onerous as Sprint Nextel's commitment to pay $15.5 billion over four years. Instead of subsidising smartphones, T-Mobile USA will let consumers pay the full price in monthly installments. Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, Apple's first partner for the iPhone, applauds T-Mobile USA's idea. "That's something we've looked at on several occasions. I kind of like that idea," Stephenson said. "Its something we're going to be watching."

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam told Reuters T-Mobile USA's strategy is "very intriguing," but wondered if consumers are ready to pay full price. An iPhone 5 with 16 gigabytes of storage that is not tied to a contract costs $649 on Walmart.com. If subsidies are removed and payment plans widely adopted, some experts say consumers might opt for cheaper devices. "The illogical love affair is over. Now it's just a great company," said a former top executive for a rival in the handset business. "The AT&Ts of the world will start to try to get themselves weaned off of paying such great subsidies to Apple."

In content, there are already signs of resistance. The company is meeting media executives in a potential effort to transform the living room with some kind of new Apple TV product, sources have said. Its efforts are hindered, however, by the reluctance of movie and TV programme makers to make content deals favorable to Apple. They saw how Apple's iTunes service helped decimate recording industry's profits some years ago and they are very wary as a result, sources and analysts say.

Samsung led the global smartphone market with 29 percent market share in the fourth quarter, up from 22.5 percent a year ago. Apple was No. 2, but its share fell to 21.8 percent from 23 percent a year ago, according research firm IDC. Apple's ability to extract low prices from the makers of chips and other components is one of the reasons it preserves margins in the 40 percent range on average. But given increasing competition in the United States and its relatively weak position (sixth in smartphone sales) in the rapidly growing China market, that power might be hard to keep. Supplier stock prices surge or plummet as result of being chosen or rejected by Apple.

Chipmaker Audience went public last year on the back of its Apple business, but the stock plummeted when Apple stopped using its chips. Audience's largest customer is now Samsung and its stock is recovering. An executive at one chipmaker welcomed the prospect that one day his company might depend less on Apple. Selling to Apple is "a double-edged sword," said the executive, who was not authorised to discuss his company's relationship with Apple. Having Apple as a customer guarantees huge volumes, but comes at the cost of accepting rock bottom prices that can cripple profit margins, the executive said.

Meanwhile, a few component makers are staking out territory in smartphones and tablets without Apple. InvenSense reported a 58 percent jump in quarterly earnings last Wednesday and its stock leaped 11 percent, partly because its gyroscope chips are used in hot-selling Android devices, including the Google Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy S III and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. To be sure, InvenSense is trying to win Cupertino, California-based Apple's business. But even without Apple, it has become a key supplier in the smartphone and tablet market. But as Samsung's share of the smartphone market grows further, it too is forcing suppliers to accept lower and lower prices, said Evercore Partners analyst Mark McKechnie. "Samsung beats the heck out of people too. Be careful what you wish for," McKechnie said.

Cult status

For now, Apple is still a mega player, even if it ships fewer phones than Samsung. For many consumers, its cult-like status remains unchallenged. Despite recent stock market losses - more than $230 billion has been wiped off Apple's value since its September peak - the iPhone alone pulled in $30.66 billion in revenue last quarter, 43 percent more than Microsoft's entire sales for the period. "Even though they're not gaining share, they're such a large piece of the market and such a driver of customer volume into their stores that people can't walk away yet," said David Yoffie, a professor who specialises in competitive strategy at Harvard Business School. "Over the longer term, clearly there will be more and more pressure on Apple if they don't find new ways to innovate."

Even with slower growth, Apple is still widely seen as a highly successful company with a bright future and plenty of potential to produce another revolutionary product. "What rabbit will Apple pull out of its hat to once again transform the industry?" asked Joseph Doyle, who co-manages wealth management firm Morris Capital Advisors' large cap strategy. "And if they can't do it, does that make it an awful investment? No, that will make it more like everything else."

Samsung announces Galaxy Express smartphone with 4G

NEW DELHI: Samsung has announced a new smartphone, Galaxy Express, with top-of-the-line connectivity features like 4G LTE and NFC. However, most other features of the smartphone appear pale in front of the latest connectivity technologies it boasts of.
The all-new Samsung Galaxy Express has a 4.5-inch SuperAMOLED Plus screen with resolution of 800x480p. It runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM. Buyers can look forward to 8GB onboard storage and microSD card support up to 32GB. Samsung has once again used the design theme it has followed since Galaxy S III was launched.

Coming to the connectivity suite, the new smartphone can connect to the internet via 2G, 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi, while data can be transferred over Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and microUSB 2.0. The rear camera of the new Galaxy Express is a bit of a let-down, since it has a 5MP sensor and packs with LED flash. The secondary camera of the device has a 1.3MP unit. Some exclusive apps included in the phone by Samsung are AllShare Play, ChatOn and S Beam.

Considering the long way 4G connectivity has to go in India, it is unlikely that the device will be launched here anytime soon. The company recently unveiled Galaxy Grand, a smartphone with 5-inch screen at Rs 21,500. It is yet to showcase previously announced phones like Galaxy S III Mini, Galaxy Xcover 2 and Galaxy Premier.

HTC launches India's most expensive Android phone, Butterfly

NEW DELHI: Taiwanese manufacturer HTC has launched its new flagship smartphone, Butterfly, in India. The top-of-the-line device has broken all price barriers for Android smartphones in India and will cost buyers Rs 44,900. This places new HTC phone above Apple iPhone 5's base model and Nokia Lumia 920 in terms of pricing, and much ahead of Samsung Galaxy S III.

The distinction of being the most expensive Android phone was previously held by Samsung Galaxy S III, which was initially launched at Rs 43,180 in May 2012. However, this price was soon cut to sub-Rs 40,000 levels and the device currently sells for approximately Rs 32,000 on the internet.

HTC Butterfly, known as Droid DNA in the US market, features a 5-inch Super LCD3 screen. This display has pixel density of 441ppi, the highest in any phone currently available in the market, and supports full HD videos (shot at 1920x1080p resolution). This smartphone comes with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), layered with HTC Sense UI, out-of-the-box and can be upgraded to Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean).

The upcoming Butterfly is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM. It will have 16GB onboard memory and will support microSD card expansion up to 32GB. Connectivity options in the device include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB. Since the device is not listed on HTC's India website, it is not known whether the device meant for the market will support 4G LTE or not. Butterfly will sport an 8MP autofocus snapper with LED flash on the back and 2.1MP camera in the front.

Sony has also showcased a new smartphone with a full HD screen, Xperia Z. Apart from features similar to HTC Butterfly, this phone is also resistant to water, dust and shocks.

Wipro is looking at investing in new geographies, tech: CFO

Written By Unknown on Senin, 28 Januari 2013 | 21.43

In an exclusive interview with ET Now, Suresh Senapaty, Chief Financial Officer, Wipro, gives his sense of the company's acquisition and growth plans. Excerpts:

ET Now: Please give us a sense on your acquisition plans.
Suresh Senapaty: We have been very active so far as acquisitions are concerned. We continue to be active. There is an independent department working on it and our objective for acquisition is not aggregation, but to clearly fill in the gaps either. It is for addressing some geographies, addressing some practices where we do not have a critical mass. So, supplementation to our organic growth is clearly our motto and from that point of view, clearly we are looking at investing in technology, new geographies and also momentum verticals.

ET Now: Any particular geography that you are looking at?
Suresh Senapaty: No, we have not spelled them out, but there are identified geographies where we do not have critical mass in comparison to the kind of opportunities that are there.

ET Now: Wipro beat street expectations like results, but when it comes to the core IT services, they did not do as well as the peers. So where would you say had Wipro gone wrong?
Suresh Senapaty: We are in a particular direction, we are at a particular stage of our journey and in that context what we have anticipated, what we have guided, what we have spoken, we are staying course and we are happy with what we did.

ET Now: Both Gartner and Nasscom have indicated much better times ahead for the IT industry in 2013. Is that the sense you are getting from your clients?
Suresh Senapaty: I have nothing to disbelief that. I am sure there will be better times. Future years will be better times absolutely.

Google reveals why Indians avoid online shopping

NEW DELHI: Online shopping in India has hit a tipping point and is expected to see exponential growth in 2013, says Google India. The search giant combined consumer interest observed on Google search and online research conducted by TNS to come out on a new report on online shopping in India. The report says online shopping in India saw 128% growth in interest from the consumers in the year 2011 to 2012, compared to only 40% in 2010 to 2011.

The report also highlighted some barriers that deter people from shopping online - the number one factor was inability to touch and try the goods before purchase, fear of faulty products, fear of posting their personal and financial details online and the inability to bargain were cited among the other reasons.

In terms of product categories, consumer interest on Google search for apparels & accessories (30%) emerged as the second biggest product category after consumer electronics (34%). The former is expected to become bigger than consumer electronics in 2013 in terms of absolute query volumes. Other categories that Indians searched for online were books (15%), beauty & personal care (10%), home & furnishing (6%), baby products (2%) and healthcare (3%). Baby products, home & furnishing and healthcare saw over twofold growth and were also the fastest growing product category in terms of query volume on Google search.

Mobile devices are also becoming a contributor in the surge for online shopping, with Google witnessing twofold growth in number of queries from mobile phones in 2012 over the preceding year. Currently, 30% of all shopping queries in India come from mobile phones.

Google India's report says 90% of online shoppers are planning to buy more products online. In terms of top product categories ever purchased online, apparels & accessories was among the top category (84%), followed by electronics (71%), beauty & personal care (64%), books (62%) and household products (61%). The research also highlighted that baby products (39%), health & nutrition (43%) product category were also becoming popular with online buyers. The frequency of purchase was also higher for categories like apparels & accessories (34%), beauty & personal care (33%) products in comparison to electronics (28%).

In terms of converting more users to shop online, online ticketing emerged as the gateway, as it was easier to convert online ticket buyers to shop online. Online ticket consumers were also likely to spend higher average, as people spent Rs 2347 on their first product purchase in comparison to Rs 1626 for others. Online ticket buyers were also seen to be more comfortable with the use of debit cards (24%), credit card (19%) and cash on delivery (55%). For regular internet users - cash on delivery was the most preferred mode of payment (74%), followed by debit card (18%) & credit card (5%).

Rajan Anandan, vice president and managing director of Google India, said "By looking at the trends in 2012, we expect 2013 to be a strong growth year for players who're focussed on fast growing categories like apparels & accessories and niche product categories like baby products, home furnishings & health-nutrition. We expect the growth to come from outside of top 8 metros as was evident in our recently concluded Great Online Shopping Festival, which saw over 51% of traffic from non-metros."

Anonymous hacks, defaces US government website

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 | 21.43

BANGALORE: In a sharp escalation of its stand off with federal authorities, internet activist group Anonymous hacked into a US government website in retaliation for the death of Aaron Schwartz, and has threatened leak sensitive government information.

Hacking and defacing of the website of United States Sentencing Commission, which comes under the US Department of Justice, was in revenge of what it called the unnecessary death of fellow internet activist Aaron Schwartz, for which Anonymous blamed US federal prosecutors and that country's justice system.

"Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed. Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play," said the message posted by Anonymous on USSC website.

Anonymous also had files posted on the USSC website, under the names of US Supreme Court Judges, which it said contained sensitive government information. Keys for decrypting the data in the files will be provided to selected media at a future date, the message posted on the website said.

Earlier this week, Anonymous had called for a "civil war," to overthrow the US government, which according to the group has insisted on calling them "terrorists."

In what was reminiscent of recent Delhi government's reaction to widespread protests in India's capital city against the gang rape and murder of a 23-year old woman in Delhi, Anonymous asked in a statement posted online, whether the "United States government is truly afraid of we, the people?" In response to peaceful street protests, Delhi police had used tear gas and water cannons to disburse protestors.

Aaron Schwartz, 26, was a political organiser and founder of social news website Reddit, who fought against US law Stop Online Piracy Act. When Schwartz was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment on 11 January, US federal authorities were pursuing charges against him for unauthorised mass download of material from JSTOR, an online repository of academic journals.

The group said it does not expect or desire to be negotiated with but has called for upholding rights guaranteed by the constitution, especially by federal prosecutors.

Peaceful protests, including Occupy WallStreet where Anonymous played a central role, has not brought about any lasting legislative changes and hence it is time to "openly declare war against United States government," the group said in its statement.

The acktivist group said that the USSC website was chosen due to "the symbolic nature of its purpose -- the federal sentencing guidelines which enable prosecutors to cheat citizens of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to a fair trial, by a jury of their peers -- the federal sentencing guidelines which are in clear violation of the 8th amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishments."

In India, in the recent past, Anonymous has hacked into various government websites to protest policies that the group called were meant to censor free speech.

How Google is preparing Manipur for polls

By using everything from face-recognition software to satellite mapping, Manipur shows the way in using technology to battle electoral fraud.

The 21,000-odd people who got themselves enrolled in multiple electoral rolls in Manipur had definitely not taken into account the power of Google Picasa. This is the open source software that sarkari staff, in a rare display of tech-savviness , have been using to detect fake voters over the last few months. In fact, the use of Picasa's face-recognition feature may help Manipur become the only state in the country to have a 100% correct electoral roll before the Lok Sabha polls next year.

Manipur's lead is being followed by neighbouring Nagaland and distant Jammu & Kashmir. The Election Commission of India (ECI), too, has decided to develop its own face-recognition software to detect and delete anomalies in electoral rolls across the country.

The use of technology started with state Assembly elections exactly a year ago. The state's joint chief electoral officer Naorem Praveen Singh said it was decided to take individual photographs of all voters when they came to cast their votes so that later these could be matched with the electoral rolls. The third polling officer in each booth was given a Lemon D226 mobile phone. "With our limited resources, we could not afford digital cameras. This particular model was chosen because it comes cheap at about Rs 1,200 a set, and the batteries last for 72 hours in switch-on mode. This was a crucial factor since many polling stations were located in areas without electricity," said Singh. On polling day, of the nearly 13.9 lakh voters who cast their votes, photos of more than 12.03 lakh (over 85%) were taken. Once the polling personnel returned to their respective district headquarters, the images from their mobile phones were downloaded, polling station-wise , in separate folders.

"We then started the process of matching the photos of the voters who cast their votes with the photos that appeared on the electoral rolls. But this was too cumbersome a process and was taking ages. After a few months, our staff in the technical wing came up with the idea of using Google Picasa as a face-recognition software. So we downloaded this free software and even customised it before starting the process of matching the photos of the voters with those appearing on the rolls from September last year. Over the past four months, 21,000 people whose names appeared in more than one electoral roll of a polling station were detected and their names struck off the rolls," said an officer of the state election department's technical wing.

Singh is sure that the state's electoral rolls will be 100% error free by the time the Lok Sabha polls come around. "There won't be a single duplicate or bogus voter by next year," he said. As for the 3.56 lakh-odd voters who did not exercise their franchise in last year's Assembly polls, they're all being tracked down and their photos are being taken once again. As per census figures, the female to male ratio in Manipur is 987:1000 but according to the last year's rolls, it stood at 1043:1000, thus indicating the presence of a large number of bogus women voters in the rolls. The ongoing correction of the rolls has brought down this ratio to 1029:1000 at present and the election department is determined to bring it down to the actual census ratio.

Similarly, the elector to population ratio which was abnormally high in last year's rolls at 82:100 has been brought down to 62:100.

But this isn't the only innovation undertaken by Manipur's election officers. Before the polls, all polling stations, polling areas and assembly constituencies were mapped extensively using Google Earth and with help from the Manipur Remote Sensing & Applications Center (MRSAC ). "Each polling station's coordinates , road connectivity, proximity to police stations and security forces' posts and surrounding terrain were mapped and on that basis, we deployed security forces to the polling stations. This precluded militant attacks on polling stations that used to be a regular feature in the past," said Singh. Also, the CEO's office has commissioned the MRSAC to extensively map the entire state so as to enumerate the exact number of households on the ground. Every household will be assigned individual numbers and enumerators on the ground will survey them to get the number of voters in each for comparison with the draft electoral rolls. "We'll be able to detect and delete bogus households from the rolls in this manner," said Singh.

Samsung's new fridge runs on Google's Android

TORONTO: Refrigerators are getting smart. A new model released earlier this month runs apps to help users browse recipes, create shopping lists and manage the expiration dates of items like yogurt and milk.

The T9000 refrigerator by electronics company Samsung has a 10-inch Wi-Fi-enabled touchscreen and includes apps such as Epicurious for recipes and Evernote for note-taking.

"The fridge, because it's the hub of the family and the kitchen, is now another access point without having to drag around your tablet or have your phone with you in the vicinity of where you're cooking or entertaining," said Warner Doell, a vice president in the home appliance division at Samsung Canada.

The display enables users to keep up with the news, weather and even Twitter from the fridge door. It can also replace hand-written calendars with Google Calendar integration, and run slideshows of photos, according to Doell.

Shopping lists can be created on the fridge with the Evernote app, which will sync to smartphones and recipes can be found at Epicurious.

"You can say, 'I have these ingredients in the fridge -- what can I make?' and it will show you recipes that you can prepare," said Doell.

For people who have trouble keeping track of expiration dates of food items, there's an app for that, too.

But with smartphones and tablets are already ubiquitous in homes, does the smart refrigerator offer more than novelty?

Doell said it does.

"I get asked a lot why do you need a screen on a refrigerator? And it's a good question because we're inundated with technology today," said Doell.

The main reasons, he explained, are ease-of-use in managing settings, such as the refrigerators' temperature, and for convenience because consumers are demanding pervasive connectivity.

"This isn't only about today -- it's about what will the next five to ten years look like," he added.

The T9000 is geared towards the young-minded consumer who turns to technology for convenience, according to Doell.

Whether it's to control heating, air conditioning, lighting or window coverings, Doell said that apps for home automation will be increasingly penetrating the home.

"The technology is converging across all product categories. With appliances being the traditional staid industry, it has not been fast to adopt it," said Doell, adding that Samsung plans to take a leadership role in the area.

The refrigerator runs the Android operating system, but it is not possible to install other Android apps. It will be available worldwide in the spring for a suggested retail price of $3,999.

Top US cities for IT jobs revealed

FLORIDA: Modis, an information technology staffing company, has identified some of the top cities for IT jobs for this year. The company compiled this list of 10 cities based on job availability and trends seen through the Modis branch network across the United States.

The company said that opportunities in IT sector were available in traditional tech hubs like San Francisco and New York offering growth, but a surprising trend emerged as a number of Midwestern cities, including Minneapolis, St Louis and Omaha, also showed an increase in jobs. This shift is likely due to organisations moving operations to cities with lower-than-average cost of living and an educated workforce, it said.

Modis' report said some of the most in-demand positions include project managers, software developers and business analysts. Additionally, professionals with three to seven years of experience are also highly sought after for middle and upper management positions. Job seekers looking for IT positions in the financial services industry will see increased demand in St Louis, Minneapolis, Boston and New York. On the other hand, Omaha and Raleigh feature opportunities within the biotech, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.

Following are the top US cities for IT jobs in 2013:

*San Francisco, California (and surrounding Bay Area)

Technology a job killer?

NEW YORK: To workers being pushed out of jobs by today's technology, history has a message: You're not the first.

From textile machines to the horseless carriage to email, technology has upended industries and wiped out jobs for centuries. It also has created millions of jobs, though usually not for the people who lost them.

"People suffer - their livelihoods, their skills and training are worth less,'' says Joel Mokyr, a historian of technological change at Northwestern University. "But that is the price we pay for progress.''

A look at breakthroughs that made the goods we buy more affordable, our lives more comfortable - and our jobs more precarious:

The first industrial revolution
For most of history, people made many goods themselves. That changed with the First Industrial Revolution, which began in England in the mid-18th century and lasted about 100 years.

New mechanical devices that allowed one man to do the work of several flooded the market with products, most notably textiles. Using cords, wheels and rollers, inventors sped up the twisting of threads to make yarn and the weaving of yarn to make cloth.

Next, steam was used to free the new machines from the limits of man's muscle and make them run faster. The new machines produced so much, so fast and so cheaply, more people could afford to buy textiles. Demand soared and so did jobs manning the machines and doing other work.

In America in 1793, Eli Whitney freed slaves from the laborious work of picking sticky seeds from cotton bolls by inventing a cotton gin that did that automatically. It led to widespread planting of cotton - but even more work for slaves.

Whitney also is credited with another invention: interchangeable parts. At a workshop he ran for making firearms, he had his staff make the same part many times so that his guns could be assembled quickly. It worked, and industries such as watch makers copied his method.

In 1831, Cyrus McCormick invented a reaper that cut wheat stalks as it was pulled by horses and piled them on a platform. Farmers could harvest faster.

In 1837, John Deere stuck the blade of a steel saw onto a plow and invented the steel-edged plow to replace cast-iron ones. Farmers could cut a furrow in the earth more easily and sow faster.

And so began a series of inventions that made farming efficient, and began to drain farms of people. In 1800, two-thirds of Americans worked on farms; today, 2 percent do.

The second industrial revolution
Life sped up more in this second period of innovation, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, an age of steel and electric power, expanding railroads and the automobile.

In 1856, an Englishman discovered a way of making steel fast and cheap, and other inventors soon improved the process. Railroad companies started using steel for their rails instead of wrought iron, which bent easily and needed to be replaced often. Trains could carry heavier loads, which meant businesses could send more products to distant markets. Sales increased, and so did jobs.

In 1861, a telegraph line was strung from coast to coast in the US, vastly improving communication. It also wiped out the Pony Express delivery service; it went out of business the same year.

In 1879, Thomas Edison made a light bulb that wouldn't burn out in a few hours. Factories replaced gas lights, reducing the number of fires.

In quick succession came a string of breakthroughs - the automobile, an automatic typesetting machine for printing, a tractor propelled by an internal combustion engine instead of pulled by horses and the Wright brothers' airplane.

Henry Ford started his eponymous car company in 1903. He put men and their tools in stationary positions and had a car being assembled roll from one man to the next. The moving assembly line was born, and cars could be made faster and cheaper. As with textiles earlier, car prices plummeted and demand soared, creating new kinds of jobs in a new industry - and helping to wipe out 100,000 jobs for carriage and harness makers.

The information age
The inventor's focus shifted from building things to manipulating information. The tools of this new period help people gather and analyze data and communicate faster, cheaper, better.

No invention is commonly accepted as first of the age, but one contender is the first digital computer in 1937, created by George Stibitz of Bell Labs, the former research arm of AT&T. Stibitz seized the idea of using the open and closed positions of metallic devices when electricity runs through them to do simple math.

In 1947, a team at Bell Labs led by William Shockley discovered how to amplify and switch electronic signals using semiconductor material. It was the first transistor. A decade later, many of them were crammed onto a small chip, dubbed an integrated circuit.

Before the transistor, electronic products worked with bulky vacuum tubes. Now computing power could be miniaturized, a breakthrough that led to small radios, personal computers, cellphones and an array of other devices today.

In 1971, the first email was sent by a Defense Department computer engineer.

The same year, John Blankenbaker built the Kenbak-1, the first computer small and cheap enough for the masses to buy. They didn't. Fewer than 50 Kenbak-1s were sold, mostly to a community college, according to oral history by Blankenbaker at the Computer Museum in Boston. His company went out of business within two years

In 1981, the National Science Foundation set up a network linking university computers, a milestone in the development of the Internet. Its impact could scarcely be imagined then.

The past three decades, new products and innovations have allowed people to entertain and inform themselves anywhere, anytime.

In 1983, Motorola introduced the first portable cellphone, a 2-pound clunker called the DynaTac 8000x. In 1984, the first PDA, or personal digital assistant, was sold - the long-forgotten Psion. In 1994, BellSouth sold its first Simon, the start of a stream of ever-smarter smartphones from which you can access virtually any information while on the run, including that staple of the telephone operator - a phone number.

Which helps explain why there were just 36,000 US operators in 2010, down nearly two-thirds in 10 years.

A job that rose in the same period? Software engineer. They numbered 1.03 million in 2010, up nearly 40 per cent.

Facebook bars Twitter's Vine from contacting users

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 26 Januari 2013 | 21.43

LONDON: A day after Twitter unveiled a new app Vine, rival firm Facebook has cut off the video-sharing application's "find people" button, which allowed members to connect to their friends on the social networking giant.

Twitter users trying to use the feature are greeted with an error message saying that Vine is not authorised to make the Facebook request.

The move is the latest in a series of apparent hostilities between the microblogging site and the social networking giant, the Telegraph reports.

At the end of last year Instagram, the Facebook-owned photo sharing app, disabled the feature that allowed Twitter to properly display its photos, in a sign of growing tensions between the two platforms.

This meant that Twitter users were forced to click through to the Instagram site if they wanted to see photos in their entirety.

It then emerged that Twitter had earlier made a failed 525 million dollars bid to buy Instagram.

Suggestions that Twitter had "verbally agreed" a deal to buy the app only intensified hostilities with Facebook, the paper said.

Use 181 code as women helpline number: Sibal to state CMs

NEW DELHI: Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal has asked state chief ministers to consider starting a emergency helpline service exclusively for women on code '181'.

"Keeping in view the increased frequency of unfortunate instances of offences and violence against women, the Government of National Capital Territory is using the help-line service exclusively for women in distress and I urge you to consider starting a similar help-line service on code '181' in your state," Sibal said in the letter.

The communication has been sent to all Chief Ministers, a government official told PTI.

Earlier, Sibal had said the government would give single emergency number 181 to women across the country.

Amid nationwide uproar over brutal gang-rape of a 23-year old paramedic student, the Telecom Ministry released a three-digit number, 167, for women helpline in Delhi 181 but the number, however, was changed to 181 as the Ministry felt that it would be easier to recollect.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had requested to allot a three-digit phone number for helping women in distress.

A central government agency is also running trials to instantly track the location of the caller on emergency numbers to help narrow down the time taken by security personnel to reach the spot even if the call is incomplete.

The Telecom Minister has also asked Chief Ministers to consider using 181 as emergency helpline number besides the existing police help-line, which works on a different code.

The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY), under Sibal, is also working on women safety devices below price of Rs 1,000. The proposed electronic device will have high-tech features like sending alerts to emergency numbers with help of a voice command only.

DEITY has set a target of six months to come up with prototype of this safety device in six months.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg steps into politics

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook confirmed that co-founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg will make a foray into politics next month by hosting a fundraiser for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
The mid-February event at Zuckerberg's home in the California city of Palo Alto is to support the re-election bid of high-profile Republican Christie, who is seen as a possible future contender for US president.

"Mark and Priscilla are happy to host him at their home to support his re-election," Facebook spokeswoman Sarah Feinberg told AFP.

"They admire his leadership on education reform and other issues."

Zuckerberg's relationship with Christie dates back to 2010, when the 28-year-old native of New York State made a $100 million grant to the troubled New Jersey public school system.

The New York Daily News quoted a Christie strategist as saying that the governor is "gratified to have Mark and Priscilla's support," regarding the fundraiser.

Those attending the Zuckerberg event will be asked for donations of $3,800 each to keep within the New Jersey cap for contributions, the report said.

Christie's popularity soared after his handling of the emergency response to the devastation inflicted on New Jersey by superstorm Sandy last year.

He has served as the governor of New Jersey, a traditionally Democratic state, since January 2010.

Anonymous hacks, defaces US government website

Microsoft: New, cheaper Surface tablets coming

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 25 Januari 2013 | 21.43

NEW DELHI: Software giant Microsoft seems to be betting big on hardware. During Microsoft's earnings call on Friday, the company's chief financial officer Peter Klein revealed that the company is working on new Surface tablets to address a wider price range. He also said that the world's biggest software maker will focus on increasing the retail channels for the existing models.

Talking about Surface series of tablets Klein said, "We're going to expand geographically, we're going to expand the product lineup, we're going to expand retail distribution and capacity."

A Microsoft spokesperson later clarified that the company is collaborating with OEMs to meet any need for cheaper versions of Surface, media reports said. Klein did not give any price range or time period for the launch of these new Microsoft tablets.

Neither Microsoft nor Klein mentioned sales figures of Surface, which launched in November 2012. However, analysts' estimates peg it at around 1 million units or lower, or a small fraction of the sales of its chief rival Apple iPad.

Microsoft sells Surface tablet through company's official stores and pop-up stores only, not third-party sellers. The device has not enjoyed much traction among consumers, but software maker SAP recently placed an order for the tablet. The CFO of the company even said that Apple iPad cannot replace the laptop, while Microsoft Surface can.

Microsoft's has made two versions of its tablet - Surface and Surface Pro. The former runs on Windows RT (a downgraded version of the company's latest operating system) and is available for $499 to $599. The latter is powered by Windows 8 Pro, will hit the shelves on February 9 this year and cost $899 to $999.

SAP sees profitability rise from new web products

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 24 Januari 2013 | 21.43

FRANKFURT: German business software group SAP said its profit would grow faster than revenues from traditional software and related services, helped by new web software products like cloud-computing and data analysis.

SAP, based in Walldorf, southern Germany, is betting on faster growing, web-based software products that are less vulnerable to the economic downturn as there are no upfront costs for programme licences, hardware or installation.

SAP said on Wednesday it expected operating profit this year to be 5.85-5.95 billion euros at constant currencies, up 12-14 percent from 5.21 billion in 2012, and beating an average analyst forecast for a 6 percent rise in a Reuters poll.

However, revenue growth in software and software-related services as a whole would slow to 11-13 percent this year after a 17 percent jump to 13.2 billion euros ($17.5 billion) last year, SAP said.

Software sales generate high-margin, long-term maintenance contracts and are an important gauge of future profit.

Goldman Sachs analyst Mohammed Moawalla said SAP's outlook implied an improvement of 60-70 basis points in this year's operating margin to 32.3 percent at constant currencies.

"We believe that 2012-13 are peak years of investments and we expect better operating leverage going forward," he said in a client note, rating the shares 'buy'.

SAP shares were up 2.5 percent by 1100 GMT, partly erasing last week's drop when it announced worse-than-expected quarterly revenue and operating profit and investors feared it was failing to keep up with arch-rival Oracle.

Traders said SAP shares as well as those of software groups Cap Gemini and Software AG, were also helped by strong IBM results, published late on Tuesday.

Shares in UK peer Sage Group bucked the trend after it said conditions in mainland Europe were still challenging.

SAP last year splashed out $7.7 billion to buy internet-based computing companies Ariba and SuccessFactors. These so-called cloud services, which deliver services via the internet from remote data centres, will approach revenues of 1 billion euros this year.

Profitability will also be boosted by a new product called Hana, which helps firms analyse large amounts of data quickly.

The product will have revenues of 650-700 million euros this year, up from 392 million euros in 2012, and will steal business away from its main competitor Oracle, the company's co-chief executive Bill McDermott told reporters.
SAP said it still saw 2015 revenue above 20 billion euros.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 image ‘leaked’ online

NEW DELHI: Excited about Samsung's upcoming rival to Apple iPad mini? Now you can also get a glance at the rumoured device. An image of the yet-to-be-unveiled tablet has been leaked online.

The photo has been tweeted by a user with Twitter handle @ClasificateArg. The image shows the front and rear views of Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, along with a few hardware specifications. The design language of the tablet is similar to the introduced with Galaxy S III. The front camera is placed on the right side and the rear panel only has the camera, while the loudspeaker grille is missing.

Previously, tech new website SamMobile said that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch Super Clear LCD display and S-Pen stylus compatibility. The big draw will be Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) out-of-the-box, considering that Google's latest mobile OS is available only on Google Nexus 10, though a few other models can be upgraded later.

Galaxy Note 8.0 will be available in 16 and 32GB variants with microSD card support up to 32GB. The image shows that the device has a 1.6GHz processor and the report in SamMobile says it has 2GB RAM. Coming to the imaging capabilities of Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, it is likely to have a 5MP camera on the rear and a 1.3MP snapper in the front.

Samsung will launch two versions of the tablet, depending on the connectivity suite, says the report. While model number GT-N5100 will have cellular data as well as Wi-Fi, the version named GT-N5110 will be a Wi-Fi-only unit. Other connectivity options in the device will be Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB 2.0. The tablet is said to weigh 330gm and run on a 4,600mAh battery.

Galaxy Note 8.0 is expected to be officially announced at Mobile World Congress in February this year. Tech news website DigiTimes has said that the price of Samsung's upcoming tablet with 8-inch screen will be between $249 and $299. This translates to a price tag of Rs 13,000 to Rs 16,000. It remains to be seen whether Samsung launches this device in India in a comparable price band. Many were let down by Google Nexus 7, which starts at $199 (approximately Rs 11,000), but is officially priced at Rs 19,999 in the Indian market.

This device will be closer to Apple iPad mini in terms of dimensions as Samsung's 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 as well as Google's Nexus 7 fall short when it comes to screen size. This will be the second Samsung tablet that measures between 7- and 10-inch, after Galaxy Tab 7.7. It will be only the fourth device in the South Korean manufacturer's Note line-up, which was launched in 2011.

LG Display posts $299 million profit

SEOUL: LG Display reported a $299 million profit for the fourth quarter thanks to mobile product launches by key customers including Apple but warned that earnings will decrease in the current quarter as demand for iPhones wanes.

The South Korean panel maker said its October-December net profit totaled 319.7 billion won ($299 million) compared with a loss of 6.3 billion won a year earlier when the European Union fined the company 215 million euros for price fixing. Sales rose 32 per cent to 8.74 trillion won.

LG forecast a profit drop for the current quarter because it expects to ship fewer panels to TV makers and mobile device makers. In particular, shipments of panels for mobile phones and tablet computers will likely decline to 25 percent of total sales from 31 percent in the fourth quarter.

LG's financial performance has become closely linked with Apple, which is the world's second-largest smartphone supplier after Samsung Electronics Co. LG Display also makes TV panels but sluggish demand for TVs has made smartphones and tablets more crucial for its growth.

Apple accounted for two thirds of LG Display's total profit during the second and third quarters of 2012, Samsung Securities analyst MS Hwang said in a report.

Apple's earnings report Wednesday showed that its sales of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers were each 1 million units short of market expectations. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company also gave sales guidance that fell short of expectations.

Many brokerages have lowered LG Display's sales outlook and share price target recently, citing concerns about demand for Apple's iPhone. Analysts said an increase in iPad mini sales in lieu of other iPad models that use bigger screens will also reduce LG's profit.

James Jeong, LG Display's chief financial officer, said the panel industry, which has been suffering from oversupply and weak global demand for years, is not expected to make a big improvement for another year.

Jeong said LG Display will have almost no increase in its production capacity this year, underlining how the tech sector is still reluctant to increase investment in factories at a time of global economic uncertainty.

LG's fourth quarter profit fell short of the 352 billion won median forecast by analysts polled by FactSet.

Operating profit totaled 587.3 billion won, compared with a 154.7 billion won loss a year earlier.

Nokia Q4: Lumia leads comeback

HELSINKI: Struggling Nokia turned a net profit of (euro) 202 million ($270 million) in the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of $1 billion a year earlier, but revenue fell 20 per cent as it failed to make gains in the fiercely competitive smartphone market.

The Finnish company said that revenue dropped to (euro) 8 billion ($10.6 billion) from (euro) 10 billion as smartphone sales plunged 55 per cent from a year earlier.

Nokia gave a grim outlook saying it expects operating margins in the first quarter of this year to be "approximately negative 2 percent, plus or minus four percentage points.'' It cited increased competition and lower-than-expected demand for its flagship Lumia phones and cheaper Asha models.

Nokia sold 15.9 million smartphones in the quarter, down from 19.6 million a year earlier, including 4.4 million Lumia phones. In all, it sold 45 million mobile phones in the period, 15 percent less than in 2011.

CEO Stephen Elop said he was encouraged that the company's strategy had reached "underlying profitability'' and strengthened its financial position but cautioned that more cutbacks could be expected.

"We remain focused on moving through our transition, which includes continuing to improve our product competitiveness, accelerate the way we operate and manage our costs effectively,'' Elop said.

Elop said Nokia Siemens Networks "drove record profitability'' during the quarter. The networks unit - a joint-venture with Germany's Siemens AG - saw its operating profit surge to (euro) 251 million from (euro) 67 million the previous year, while revenue was up 5 per cent at (euro) 4 billion.

The unit has been loss-making for years but restructuring measures including substantial job cuts have improved its performance.

The company's stock dropped more 3 per cent to (euro) 3.30 in early afternoon trading in Helsinki.

Yahoo scientist: Online multimedia content points to human behaviour

BANGALORE: One look at the news feed of Facebook will give you an indication of the huge amount of data that is flowing into the cyberworld. Earlier, it was mostly text, in the form of status messages. Now it's mostly images in the form of photographs and videos. It's not surprising, considering the availability of technology.

Thanks to good cameras on even basic phones and inexpensive data plans, it's now easy not only to shoot images and upload them to websites, but also to share them on various platforms like social networking sites or email them to friends.

The profusion of photos, videos in combination with texts has led scientists to study this new online phenomenon. Correlations and analyses have brought out some interesting insights into human behaviour.

Dr Alejandro Jaimes is a senior research scientist, who manages the Social Media Engagement group at Yahoo! Research in Barcelona, Spain. He was in Bangalore recently. During a chat, he threw light on some of the research studies that are being undertaken in this area and their findings. A lot of it is in the academic realm. It's too early to draw extrapolations and come to definitive conclusions. But, the insights are nevertheless interesting.

One of the topics of study is online networking, wherein people form or join groups. A theory in sociology that explains formation of groups is the "Common identity and common bond". Groups are either "social" or "topical", depending on what prompts people to join a particular group: it's either because people want to make personal connections with other members of the group, or they are interested in the topics discussed in the group.

Jaimes' team analysed the explicit social links and discussion patterns on Flickr groups, and was able to detect the bias of a group towards 'sociality' or 'topicality'. The research team found that it could predict the nature of the group and what was more important for the people in the group.

Jaimes says the study shows why people join a particular group. "This kind of information is very useful for automatically recommending groups to users based on topics or friends' connections, and to understand how information propagates depending on the type of group."

Research into activity of groups and the group sizes in Flickr showed that the Dunbar Number applies online too -- that is the maximum number of stable friends we can have, which is around 150.

Another interesting area of study is finding correlation among people (celebrities and politicians, for example) appearing in photographs and texts. Using mathematical models, scientists have been enable to predict with some amount accuracy who will participate in a particular event, like the premier of a movie or fashion show or sports event.

For this, the researchers built a social network based on photographs and analysed the people appearing in photos. Says Jaimes, "If you tell the system that a famous actor is at a movie premiere, our algorithm will produce a list of other celebrities or public figures that are likely to be at that event with the actor. This can be very useful for celebrity gossip and for discovering interesting relationships between public figures, among others."
