Google Glass can help improve your public speaking skills

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 31 Maret 2015 | 21.43

NEW YORK: Want to hone your public speaking skills? Google Glass may help!

Researchers have developed a new system that uses Google Glass to provide real-time feedback to the speaker on volume modulation and speaking rate.

Smart glasses installed with the intelligent user interface called Rhema can record a speech, transmit the audio to a server to automatically analyse the volume and speaking rate, and then present the data to the speaker in real time.

This feedback allows a speaker to adjust the volume and speaking rate or continue as before. Researchers at University of Rochester explained that providing feedback in real-time during a speech presents some challenges.

"One challenge is to keep the speakers informed about their speaking performance without distracting them from their speech," researchers said.

"A significant enough distraction can introduce unnatural behaviours, such as stuttering or awkward pausing. Secondly, the head mounted display is positioned near the eye, which might cause inadvertent attention shifts," they said.

Iftekhar Tanveer, the lead author of the research paper, explained that overcoming these challenges was their focus.

To do this, they tested the system with a group of 30 native English speakers using Google Glasses. They evaluated different options of delivering the feedback.

They experimented with using different colours (like a traffic light system), words and graphs, and no feedback at all (control).

They also tried having a continuous slowly changing display and a sparse feedback system, by which the speaker sees nothing on the glasses for most of the time and then just sees feedback for a few seconds.

After user-testing, delivering feedback in every 20 seconds in the form of words ("louder," "slower," nothing if speaker is doing a good job, etc) was deemed the most successful by most of the test users.

The researchers also highlight that the users, overall, felt it helped them improve their delivery compared to the users who received continuous feedback and no feedback at all.

"We wanted to check if the speaker looking at the feedback appearing on the glasses would be distracting to the audience," said Ehsan Hoque, assistant professor of computer science and senior author of the paper.

"We also wanted the audience to rate if the person appeared spontaneous, paused too much, used too many filler words and maintained good eye contact under the three conditions: word feedback, continuous feedback, and no feedback," said Hoque.

However, there was no statistically significant difference among the three groups on eye contact, use of filler words, being distracted, and appearing stiff.

China again accused of cyberattacks on US sites

BEIJING: A group that helps internet users in China see blocked websites says Chinese authorities are behind cyberattacks against the group's site and a US-based web resource for programmers that hosts some of the group's data.

The anti-censorship group Greatfire.org said in a statement that their analysis shows Chinese authorities carried out denial-of-service attacks that have intermittently shut down San Francisco-based Github over the past week. Greatfire.org said it has mirrored some of its content on Github repositories, and that the data was the target of the attacks.

Greatfire.org said the attacks are the first China has launched against foreign sites.

The Cyberspace Administration of China didn't respond to requests for comment.

Amazon will help you find plumbers, painters and more

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Maret 2015 | 21.43

CHICAGO: Amazon.com Inc is launching a home services marketplace that will connect customers with electricians, plumbers and painters in a move to have its services tied to every product sold on its website.

Amazon Home Services will allow customers to buy 700 services such as car maintenance, TV wall-mounting and house cleaning at upfront prices. The quality of the service will be backed with an Amazon guarantee, which the retailer uses to vouch for products sold by third-party sellers on its website.

A home services marketplace will extend Amazon's role as a middleman for third-party vendors, which account for about 40% of its sales. It would also help Amazon gain an edge in the fast-growing services industry in the US which the retailer estimates to be around $630 billion.

"Third party estimates show that customers spend four times more on services each year than they do on physical products," Peter Faricy, vice-president, Amazon Marketplace told Reuters.

"So for us the opportunity is very big," he said.

Around 85 million Amazon shoppers buy products that require servicing or installation, the company said. Amazon will roll out the service nationwide with "high coverage" in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.

Services marks a new frontier for Amazon, which has focused on selling products as it expanded from books into consumer goods, groceries and media. Local services have been tough for marketplace companies to turn a profit, since offerings must be tailored to each city or region.

Amazon will be in direct competition with Angie's List Inc , Craigslist Inc, and Yelp Inc as well as US home improvement chains like Home Depot Inc and Lowe's Companies Inc, which have invested in ways to link customers with local plumbers, painters and other service providers.

Amazon will hand pick service professionals after running background checks and offer to match prices if customers get a lower price for the same service and professional on another site, store or directly from the professional within 30 days of a purchase, Faricy said.

Amazon Home Services will have a revenue share model with the service providers. The retailer will charge a 5% transaction fee, along with platform fees ranging from 10% for custom services and 15% for standardized services.

Top brands more active on Instagram than Facebook: Study

NEW YORK:Instagram over Facebook: Study An increasing number of popular brands are posting more on Instagram than on Facebook, a study conducted by New York-based research firm L2 suggests.

Both brand and social media users are slowly preferring easier-to-use and "less boring" Instagram.

L2 said that around three million US teenagers stopped using Facebook between 2011 and 2014, while "the same cohort now cites Instagram as their most important social network", according to a Benzinga.com report.

Ranging from sportswear to beauty and consumer electronics, brands of all sorts are instantly captivated by Instagram's organic reach.

L2 pointed out that, when it comes to beauty brands, some cult colour brands like MAC, Nyx and Urban Decay rely on their ardent fan bases for Instagram love, while others, like Proactiv and Estee Lauder, push celebrity influencers to boost growth and engagement.

Top brands' Instagram posts generate a per-follower engagement rate 58 times higher than their Facebook posts -- and 120 times higher than their Twitter posts, according to a research and advisory firm Forrester.

Facebook had decided to change its advertising policies last year and announced in a blog post that beginning in January 2015, "people will see less of promotional page posts" and stated that brands that marketed promotional content on the site "will see a significant decrease in distribution".

Facebook bought Instagram in April, 2012 for a billion dollars, and Instagram is now valued at a whopping $35 billion.

Spotify comes to PlayStation, replaces Sony's Music Unlimited

NEW YORK: Spotify is coming to the PlayStation, replacing Sony's own Music Unlimited service, as the company continues to expand the game console into an entertainment hub beyond video games.

Spotify hits the PlayStation 3 and 4 on Monday, with a new app adapted for large television screens. Sony says partnering with Spotify expands its music service to 41 countries, rather than the 19 available with Music Unlimited, and offers better tools for playlists and music discovery.

PlayStation users have long been able to watch DVDs and stream Netflix, Amazon and YouTube shows with the console. Just two weeks ago, Sony launched an online television service, PlayStation Vue, offering more than 50 over-the-air and cable channels starting at $50 a month.

Spotify has 60 million active users worldwide, including 15 million paid subscribers. Its music app is available on some internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes, but Spotify says it worked closely with Sony to optimize its service for the PlayStation.

Notable features include: the ability to listen to music while playing a game and still listening to sound effects, or automatically pausing the game while changing volume or playlists.

The service is free with ads, or costs $10 a month for a premium ad-free version that offers offline playback. Although free users aren't allowed to choose specific songs on mobile devices, they will be able to on the PlayStation, just as they now do on traditional computers.

Customers who do not already have a Spotify account can sign up on the PlayStation. Existing Spotify customers will get access to the PlayStation app with their usual sign-in.

Music Unlimited subscribers won't be automatically switched over; those that subscribe on other devices such as Sony phones, will need to get the Spotify app.

More Indians now shopping on their mobile: Report

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 29 Maret 2015 | 21.43

MUMBAI: Mobile commerce is likely to overtake e-commerce in the next few years, spurred by the continued uptrend in online shopping and increasing use of mobile apps, says an industry report.

"It is estimated that the mobile app download would grow six-fold by the end of this year to 9 billion apps," said a KPMG report, adding the country has been the fastest growing mobile app market in both 2014 and 2013.

India contributed to 7% of the global app downloads, ranking fourth behind Indonesia, China and the US, the report said.

The optimism comes from the fact that people accessing the Internet through their mobiles had jumped 33% in 2014 to 173 million and is expected to grow 21% year-on-year till 2019 to touch 457 million.

The report also said that among the entire app usage, shopping tops, with mobile commerce likely to overtake e-commerce.

"With online shopping platforms seeing an impressive growth in the number of transactions executed through mobile apps, it is not surprising that major e-commerce portals are contemplating discontinuing their full-version websites altogether, to focus solely on the mobile platform," it said.

Mobile apps are particularly seen as a significant new avenue to target consumers.

The report said that with several such avenues opening up, marketers, content creators and advertisers are expected to continue working towards new and more innovative ways to reach out to their target audience.

The report indicated that in keeping with the trend of increasing mobile app usage, there has also been a considerable cut in the usage of on-deck services that can be directly accessed through the handset screen offered by the telecom operator portals.

However, despite growth in the number of apps developed and downloaded, companies are finding it difficult to encourage users to switch to paid versions.

This has been a critical challenge, said the report. "As much as 90% of the apps downloaded in the country are free," noted the report, adding nearly 98% of Google Play's global revenue from apps and games is coming from the 'freemium' apps.

These apps allow free access for limited services or a 'lite' version of the app.

Users are expected to pay for additional services or a premium version.

10 mistakes that will kill your startup

The road to a creating a successful business is never easy. However, if you have a list of all the things you shouldn't do, you can turn that into a recipe for success.

Here are 10 startup mistakes that needs to be avoided to survive past the initial roadblocks.

1. Bad location

March 28, 2015

You can change everything about a house but its location. Likewise, if your startup is in a bad location, you can't change the nature of that location. It's easier to move the startup.

2. Marginal niche

March 28, 2015

By choosing an obscure niche a startup may paint themselves in a corner. If you are afraid of competition, this is not the way to avoid it.

3. Derivative idea

March 28, 2015

There are only so many Twitters for pet owners one can come up with. The bottom line is that the Google of tomorrow will not be like Google.

4. Obstinacy

March 28, 2015

Obstinacy -– or inability to adapt kills startups who would have survived had they not been too stubborn to see what their users were telling them.

5. Hiring Bad Programmers

March 28, 2015

Knowing a good programmer from a bad one often takes being a good one yourself, or having a trusted one on your team. Exceptional programmers are always in short supply. So the odds are stacked up against hiring good ones.

6. Choosing the wrong platform

March 28, 2015

How fast you can scale will determine whether your startup lives or dies once you get traction. On the wrong platform scalability will be the bottleneck. And users often don't wait for you to figure it out.

7. Having No Specific User in Mind

March 28, 2015

Somewhere someone will for sure be interested in your product, you just don't know who yet? Sounds like those people may not exist. Be sure to check.

8. Raising too little money or spending too much

March 28, 2015

You get what you spend on. With too little money you may not be able to flesh out your product in to its full potential. At the same time, spending too much before you grow big enough to have the numbers to raise the next round too can be disastrous. As this may mean that are out of cash, which often spells the end.

9. Raising too much money

March 28, 2015

Raising too much will likely make you feel like a huge success even before you made anything useful. At the end of the day it's users, not investors, you want to impress the most.

10. Poor investor management

March 28, 2015

If the choice is between making investors happy or making your users happy, always choose users. If the user is happy, your investors will make money eventually. Never sacrificing user interests to (supposed) profit.

As you can always make money later. This, however, cannot be said about making users happy. You need to make something they want now.

Smartphone usage alerts can leave you distressed: Report

TORONTO: Bill alerts from mobile phone companies in your email or via SMS are meant to inform you when you are about to exceed their plan limit and make the things better. But just the opposite may be happening, find researchers.

The study from University of Toronto Mississauga has found that such bill warnings can be more costly because cell phone companies adjust their plans and fees accordingly to maintain profits.

While some consumers do benefit, others either decrease or stop usage, end up with more expensive plans or continue to underestimate their usage and choose the wrong plan.

"Fixed prices go up, free minutes go down and then some of the overage rates drop. But the overall effect is that the average person pays more," said Matthew Osborne, assistant professor of marketing at University of Toronto Mississauga.

He co-wrote the paper with Michael Grubb, an assistant professor of economics of Boston College in the journal American Economic Review.

How much more? In the data and modelling the researchers used, bill shock alerts cost people an average of $33 extra.

Those who chose to stay on the most expensive plans fared best.

The researchers used monthly billing data for a group of student cellphone customers.

That formed the basis of a model for what their usage and plan choices would look like under billing alerts.

"Although much has changed in the mobile phone world in the last decade and students' choices may not reflect the broader market, verification tests run by the researchers suggested bill shock alerts still take a toll," the authors wrote.

That should lead policymakers to reconsider what measures will actually benefit consumers.

"Perhaps a better avenue is policy that helps consumers do a better job of forecasting their usage," Osborne added, such as encouraging more detailed summaries of past usage or average use over a year.

The research could have application to other services where consumers need to monitor their activity to avoid extra costs, such as banking overdrafts, utility services and even health insurance.

Periscope, Meerkat could boost citizen journalism

WASHINGTON: When three buildings collapsed and ignited a blaze in New York on Thursday, a smartphone app brought the live video feed to anyone online wanting to watch.

The disaster took place, coincidentally, the same day as the launch of Twitter's new livestream app Periscope, which became a window for the breaking news event.

The event showed how Periscope and rival app Meerkat, which can deliver live video through Twitter to anyone online, could become an important tool for citizen journalism.

By feeding live video through Twitter to anyone online, these apps eliminate the need to upload to YouTube or transfer to broadcasters like CNN to get a wide audience.

While social media has empowered citizen journalism for years, the use of live video could become a powerful tool for these reporters and change the way people get news.

"It's not just that you can upload your video, but you can upload it to the social network, which is vastly more powerful than the Web because of that network of relationships and the virality," said Jeff Howe, a Northeastern University professor who specializes in media innovation.

"This offer a great advantage to citizen journalists."

Howe said some earlier streaming video applications like Bambuser helped spread information during the Arab Spring and Occupy protests, but that he sees "a more real-time, immediacy aspect" to the new apps like Meerkat and Periscope.

Unexpected events

Dan Gillmor, an Arizona State University journalism professor and author of a book on citizen journalism, agreed that these easily used tools can raise the profile for citizen journalism.

"When something newsworthy is happening where it is unexpected, the odds that a professional journalist holding a camera or video camera are small. But the odds that a regular person will be there are close to 100 percent."

The New York fire highlighted the potential for these tools, Gillmor said, but some situations could be even more dramatic.

"Suppose we had real-time video from someone who was in the front of that (Germanwings) plane (which crashed) over the Alps, showing us a video of the captain trying to get into the cockpit," Gillmor told AFP.

"We would have a much more graphic and quite terrifying understanding of what happened."

Although technology for live streaming has been available for years, the widespread use of smartphones, improved networks and the integration with Twitter could make these tools more potent, analysts say.

"There's nothing quite like live video to put people in the moment when it comes to breaking news," said Josh Stearns, who follows citizen journalism at the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

And Stearns said the apps offer a "more intimate connection" because "they allow people to interact, to ask questions, to get a different view. They aren't just passively watching."

Meerkat, which debuted in February, and newly launched Periscope both offer live streaming, while only the latter allows the footage to be archived for later use.

After Meerkat's spectacular launch, Twitter limited access to its network to make it harder to spread through the microblogging service. But Meerkat appeared unfazed and unveiled a fresh $14 million in funds to fuel expansion.

Human rights tool?

The Periscope team hinted at possibilities for journalistic use of the platform, with a blog saying, "What if you could see through the eyes of a protester in Ukraine?"

A key question is whether the growth in live smartphone video will shed fresh light on key events, such as shootings involving police in the United States or human rights abuses in totalitarian countries.

"It would have been helpful to have footage of the Ferguson shooting," Howe said of the Missouri killing of unarmed black youth Michael Brown which sparked national protests.

An open question is whether these new technologies will help the flow of information in countries with repressive regimes such as North Korea and Cuba.

Gillmor said he believes that activists who stream live video from one of these countries would be "dumb, given that mobile networks are either part of the government or intertwined with it."

But Howe said the technology will eventually bring more abuses to light, "because it's going to become harder to shut down the information flow."

Microsoft buys Office collaborator app LiveLoop

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Maret 2015 | 21.43

NEW YORK: Microsoft has said it has purchased the office mobile app LiveLoop, which allows multiple users to collaborate on PowerPoint presentations simultaneously.

The purchase is the latest by tech giant Microsoft, after recent acquisitions of other mobile apps for professional use.

"We are excited to welcome the talented team from LiveLoop to help build great collaboration across Office applications, part of our strategy and vision to reinvent productivity," Microsoft said in a statement.

The tech giant did not say how much San Francisco startup was purchased for.

LiveLoop allows users to share PowerPoint presentations -- a Microsoft Office program -- and PDFs online among collaborators who can access and synchronize the material from any mobile device.

"You can view and present from any device, including a smartphone, so whether you're an attendee or a presenter, you can take your next meeting from the beach," the LiveLoop website said.

The California startup said it is no longer accepting new users and will close shop on April 24, advising users to back up data before then.

In February, Microsoft bought the popular calendar app Sunrise, after purchasing the email app Acompli in December.

Microsoft releases report on government spying

WASHINGTON: Microsoft said the number of global law enforcement requests for user data fell in 2014 as the tech giant renewed its call for surveillance reforms.

In its twice-yearly "transparency report," Microsoft said the total number of law enforcement requests received in the second half of the year was 31,002, bringing to the total for the year to 65,496 -- down from 72,279 a year earlier.

Some 70% of the requests came from five countries -- the United States, France, Britain, Germany and Turkey, the report said.

Microsoft deputy counsel John Frank said in a statement that while law enforcement authorities sometimes need to access data to protect the public, "access should be governed by the rule of law, and not by mandating back doors or weakening the security of our products and services."

He said revelations about vast government surveillance programmes underscore a need for reforms in the United States and more clarity in international agreements on cross-border data sharing.

"We need commitments that governments will not hack technology companies to access data outside the legal process," he said.

"Efforts to hack technology companies have undermined confidence in the security and privacy of online communications."

Microsoft also released data on US national security data requests, in accordance with requirements that it provide only ranges of numbers with a lag of at least six months.

The report showed that the company received between zero and 999 orders from a secret US intelligence court from January through June 2014 -- the same range it has reported since 2011.

Facebook to roll out suicide prevention tools in Australia

SYDNEY: Popular social media site Facebook will introduce suicide prevention and support tools for vulnerable Australian users in the coming months, a company official has said.

The initiative, which was welcomed by mental health groups when it was unveiled in the US earlier this year, allows users to report concerning online posts, The Brisbane Times reported.

The posts are then reviewed by Facebook, which can then send the original poster a message of support or advice on where to seek professional help.

Mia Garlick, Facebook's Australia and New Zealand policy head, said that the company was working with the Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre on a localised version of the suicide prevention initiative.

"All the feedback has been strong and powerful from a lot of the clinical experts and we're looking forward to rolling that out in Australia in the coming months," she told Fairfax Media.

The Mark Zuckerberg-led Facebook has also ramped up its campaign to tackle bullying, taking its approach off screen for the first time in Queensland during a workshop with students and teachers last week.

Garlick said that initial reports of abuse or bullying online were handled by teams working round-the-clock in the US, Ireland and India. There was also Australian staff that could work with police if required.

However, Garlick said that the social network did not keep statistics on the bullying complaints it received, or data on who the culprits and victims were.

"We don't have those statistics and sometimes I'm not sure that statistics help us tell the story. For every person who does get bullied, it's such a strong and bad situation that almost looking at the numbers doesn't help," she said.

"What we want to do is solve (problems) every single time it happens and make sure those people feel supported."

Garlick welcomed the announcement of Australia's first children's e-safety commissioner, who has the power to fine Facebook Aus$17,000 (nearly $13,300) a day if it does not comply with takedown orders for offensive material.

It still remains unclear what will happen if the social media site does not agree with an order made by the commissioner.

"We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it. We've been engaged with the Australian government for many years when it comes to what constitutes harassing and bullying content," Garlick said.

"For bullying and harassing content, we try and act on it within a 24-hour timeframe..." she added.

Google should be terrified right now

Is Larry Page asleep at the wheel? Because it sure feels like it.

Facebook is conducting an all-out assault on Google. It just launched embeddable videos and a new ad network. Those businesses will compete with YouTube and Google's DoubleClick display ad business.

Facebook has become a juggernaut in video lately, and this will only bolster its position. With its incredible data on users, it will be an attractive destination for video ads and display ads, weakening Google's display business.

Google looks like it is basically helpless to stop Facebook. It doesn't have an answer for Facebook. It tried and failed with Google+. Google doesn't own a "stream" like Facebook's NewsFeed, where it can stick high-quality brand advertising right into what people are reading and doing.

From the outside looking in, as Facebook gets stronger, it looks like Google is running in the wrong direction. It looks like CEO Larry Page has handed off responsibility for the company at a critical time.

While Mark Zuckerberg zeros in on real opportunity like mobile ads in the Facebook app, video plays in the app, monetizing Instagram, and building platforms with WhatsApp and Facebook messenger, Larry Page is looking at more pie-in-the-sky stuff like robotics and self driving cars.

Robots and self-driving cars are cool, and we should all be thankful that Google is willing to experiment with them. However, it's not clear they'll ever be huge businesses.

It feels like Page is bored with the nuts and bolts of running an advertising-based internet company. He seems to think things like Instagram or Snapchat are too prosaic. He isn't going to dive into the display ad business, pushing Google's business to the next level. He'd rather work on changing the world.

Zuckerberg, meanwhile, is still interested in pushing his company forward, even if it means working on smaller projects like video ads.

To be clear, Google is not suddenly going to go kaput. It's not at risk of going out of business. It will continue to mint money. But, it's hard to see where big growth is going to come from.

Mobile is neutralizing the power of the search business. People are using apps more and more for their searches.

YouTube is not the business people thought it would be. It did just $4 billion in revenue last year, and it's only breaking even.

Android is a fantastically successful mobile operating system, but Apple's iPhone has the most valuable users, and it's taking share from Android. Android has never developed into a real business and it's unclear if it ever will.

What is the future of Google's business? Larry Page has been a strong advocate for Google inventing the future through fantastic ideas like balloons that deliver internet, and contacts that measure glucose, and a startup that can prolong our lives. But are those ever going to become businesses?

In Google's defense, the tech industry tends to move in quick cycles. Just two years ago, the world was in love with Google and thought it was going to be a trillion dollar company. Facebook three years ago was seen as a risky company. Apple was tanking three years ago. Today, that's all turned around. Facebook and Apple are the kings, and people are worried about Google.

So, it's entirely possible we're being overly harsh reactionaries.

But, it feels different this time. Right now it feels like Google is directionless and Facebook has all the momentum. It feels like Google could turn into the next Microsoft — a company with brilliant people and brilliant ideas that fails to deliver, sending the stock sideways for a decade.

Internet infrastructure in the US: 4 must-knows

Internet outages can disrupt emergency services, business transactions and basic communication. Here are few things to know about the US's internet infrastructure and its vulnerabilities.

How it works
In many cases, information is transmitted at high speeds through light waves carried in slender glass fibers that are bundled together and strung along rights of way such as highways, railroads and pipelines. When covering long distances, these fiber-optic cables often are shared, meaning they might carry internet, telephone, television and data services for a variety of companies.

Rural-urban divide
In major cities, the demand for high-speed internet means there are typically multiple fiber-optic cables delivering service. If a main line is damaged, Internet traffic can be routed to another path. But in rural areas and smaller cities, these network redundancies sometimes don't exist because they are viewed as too costly. When a fiber-optic cable gets cut in those places, it can take much longer to restore service.

Increasing outages
The number of outages affecting high-capacity lines has been steadily rising, from 221 in 2010 to 418 in 2012 and 487 in 2014, according to figures from the Federal Communications Commission. That comes as the nation's fiber-optic network also has been expanding by about 10 million miles of fiber annually, according to an industry group. More fiber-optic cables means there are more chances for them to get accidently cut, vandalized or develop problems.

Government oversight
Internet infrastructure in the US has been largely unregulated by the federal government and the states. Federal agencies, for example, are distributing billions of dollars to help expand broadband into unserved areas but have not required the grant recipients to build backup systems that could guard against outages. The Federal Communications Commission has been more focused on ensuring open access on the internet. It recently raised the target speeds for what it considers to be appropriate broadband service.

Samsung to unveil tablet with iris recognition

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 27 Maret 2015 | 21.43

NEW DELHI: It looks like Samsung is working on a new version of its Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 tablet that supports iris recognition.

California (US)-based Stanford Research Institute (SRI), has issued a press informing that it has exclusively licensed its Iris on the Move (IOM) technologies to Samsung for use in Samsung mobile products. Additionally SRI has inked a supply agreement to start production and sales of the IOM technology-embedded Samsung mobile products for enterprise and business to business (b2b) applications.

It said the first product under the agreement will be a customized Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 tablet with a built-in IOM iris module. The tablet will debut at SIA New Product Showcase at ISC West 2015 (a security industry trade show in the US) and will be offered worldwide through SRI partners and resellers.

SRI claims that the purely iris-based solution is more than 1,000 times more accurate than published fingerprint data, as per some tests.

While there have always been rumours about Samsung's flagship smartphones sporting iris scanners, so far the company has hesitated from including the feature. It would be interesting to see if Samsung would include it in the Galaxy Note 5 now that it has finalised an agreement with SRI.

‘Google, Microsoft, Yahoo not blocking sex determination ads’

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has been informed that despite its order, search engines like Google India, Yahoo India and Microsoft Corporation (I) Pvt Ltd are violating Indian laws by not blocking advertisements on sex determination of a fetus.

Taking note of the submission, a bench of justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant asked advocate Sanjay Parekh to supply the compilation, listing out alleged violations, to the counsel representing the search engine firms.

"It is submitted by Sanjay Parekh, counsel appearing for the petitioner that, the order passed on January 28 is not followed by the respondent nos. 3, 4 and 5, namely, Yahoo, Google and Microsoft inasmuch such advertisements which were prohibited by virtue of that order are still being depicted."

Parekh has filed a compilation indicating that till February 19, advertisements were shown by the search engines.

"Let the same be served on counsel for said respondents within three days from today. Response thereto be filed within a week therefrom... Be that as it may, the said aspect shall be adverted to after the copy of the compilation is served on the counsel for the respondents and response thereto is filed after a week therefrom as fixed herein above," it said and fixed the PIL for hearing in last week of April.

Earlier, the court had directed Google India, Yahoo India and Microsoft Corporation (I) Pvt Ltd to strictly comply with Indian laws and block advertisements on sex determination of a fetus.

"As an interim measure, it is directed, the respondents, namely, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft shall not advertise or sponsor any advertisement which would violate Section 22 of the PC-PNDT Act," it had said.

The order was passed after Google and Microsoft argued that they were not advertising anything which violated the PC-PNDT Act or any Indian law.

The court is hearing a PIL filed by Sabu Mathew George seeking court's intervention in view of decreasing number of girl child in the country.

Earlier, the court had come down heavily on various states for their failure to stop female foeticide, leading to alarming drop in the sex ratio in the country.

Scrolling on Google Chrome set to become a lot smoother

WASHINGTON: Google has announced its decision to adopt a standard that would allow both mouse and touch navigation for its Chrome browser.

The move is aimed at addressing poor scrolling performance and general touch support in Chrome on a Windows tablet. However, the change will apply to all versions of Google Chrome, reported The Verge.

The company has said that in order to improve Chrome, it will support Pointer Events, a standard that was first brought in by Microsoft in Internet Explorer.

So far, Google had focused its efforts on supporting Touch Events, a method used by Apple in its Safari browser. However, the company said that feedback given by the web community led to "the change in heart."

Google's Rick Byers said that the change would address the longstanding source of scroll-start jank that is seen on Android.

However, Google would take some time to build and test it with nightly and weekly versions of Chrome, indicating that the users would not witness the improvements immediately Follow TOI Tech on Twitter >>> @toi_tech

Xiaomi to finally sell phones offline

NEW DELHI: China's largest smartphone maker Xiaomi will begin selling its flagship phones in The Mobile Store's brick and mortar shops, a first for the company which has so far stuck to its online-only sales model.

A top executive at Xiaomi told ET a relatively lower number of Mi 4 and Redmi Note 4G will be available for purchase at The Mobile Store, which will begin selling them in 55 stores in Delhi NCR, from Saturday, at Rs 19,999 and Rs 9,999, respectively, the same prices as that offered on online partner Flipkart.

"This will be the first time that we're getting into offline trade in India," said Manu Jain, head of India operations at Xiaomi. "In China, about 20-30% of total sales through come from telecom operators stores while the rest comes from our online store - Mi.com," he added.

Xiaomi had recently tied up with Bharti Airtel to sell Red Mi Note 4G through the carrier's 133 stores in areas where Airtel offers 4G services. Like Bharti Airtel's stores, The Mobile Store shops will act as service centers where users will be able to get their phones repaired, the company's chief executive Himanshu Chakrawarti said.

Its association with Flipkart will continue where it will sell all models through weekly flash sales. Xiaomi recently launched the Red Mi Note 2 for Rs 6,999, which will go on sale from March 31 on the popular e-commerce site.

India's largest larger mobile phone retailer which has over 800 stores, will launch the phones in other cities, covering the top 300 stores across the country. The stores will have a live Mi Zone where customers will be able to look and feel the devices, and buy them on the spot, without waiting for the weekly flash sale.

Xiaomi's Jain added that the company expected the offline route to be successful and they may even look at scaling up the brick and mortar stores, even as it continues to create its own retail store online.

Xiaomi is looking to set up Mi.com, a full-fledged e-commerce site, which will sell all of the company's products including TVs, routers and Xiaomi goodies, for the Indian market. To take this forward, Xiaomi is exploring options including a model where Mi.com can be franchised out, Jain had told ET previously.

Having garnered a market share of 3-4% as of December after selling over 1 million smartphones since July 22 last year, Xiaomi is now focusing on setting up its own research and development centre in Bengaluru where, within a year, smartphones' software will be designed and be meant for the Indian market.

The company is also ramping up production in China, which will allow it to increase the number of units from about 100,000 units it sells a week through flash sales on Flipkart, to about five times that number. Jain added that high production may also permit Xiaomi to offer its devices through ordinary sales online in the future.

The smartphone maker competes with rival Chinese brands Gionee, Oppo and One Plus, besides a swathe of Indian brands including Micromax, Lava, Karbonn and Intex. It is also in talks with electronic manufacturing service providers to begin making smartphones in India within 18-24 months.

Women more likely to use phones while diving: Study

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Maret 2015 | 21.43

NEW YORK: Female drivers are 1.63 times more likely to use a cell phone while driving than male motorists, finds a new study.

It also found that drivers under 25 years old are four times more likely to use a cell phone while driving compared to older drivers.

Unaccompanied drivers were also far more likely to use their cell phones than those who had other people in the car, according to the study published in Preventive Medicine Reports.

"The data show us that females and younger drivers are most likely to use the phone while driving, which means that public safety campaigns could benefit from targeting those two groups," said R. Sue Day from the University of Texas, Houston.

Cell phone use overall seemed to decrease over the years in Texas, starting at 20.5% in 2011 and dropping to 16.4% in 2013, according to the study.

The 2010 national prevalence estimate for using a cell phone while driving was nearly 9%, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Drivers talking on the phone while driving decreased by 5.5%, but texting while driving increased by two percent from 2011 and 2013, according to the study results.

"Drivers distracted by cell phones pose a safety threat to pedestrians and motorists in these areas," Day said.

Liquid-cooling for seriously overkill smartphones

NEW DELHI: Are you worried about the classic hot smartphone problem? Into overclocking your pocket PC? If you are, you'll be thrilled about Fujitsu's new technology for a liquid-cooled smartphone. It's a bit like putting your car's radiator into your phone — a cool idea even if you probably wouldn't need it.

Fujitsu's new 'loop heat pipe' transfer system would attach to a smartphone or tablet's CPU. The rig is less than one millimeter thick but would still be able to pump a liquid coolant through your phone's guts to dissipate heat. The company explains:

A working fluid is encapsulated inside this closed loop as a coolant. The heat from the heat source evaporates the coolant, and the energy that goes into evaporating the coolant is taken away from the heat source, lowering its temperature. It is based off of the same principle used when sprinkling water on pavement to reduce heat.

Sounds pretty cool! In theory this is supposed to improve your phone's performance without any additional drain on the battery power. The thing is, smartphones pretty much already perform preeeeeety well without overheating too bad, unless you're trying to do VR or something. And the chips that run them are only getting more efficient as time goes on.

The hypothetical idea that we're gonna need hulking, hot processors to keep texting our friends isn't too convincing. But if we do someday need to cool off phones the same way we cool off high-end gaming PCs, it's good to know there are options out there.

India's top three telcos spend Rs 85k crore in auction

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: India's top three mobile operators scooped up almost 80% of the country's airwaves in fierce competition, spending $13.6 billion in the latest round of spectrum auctions that raised a record $17.6 billion.

The heavy bidding by the large operators underscores their big bets on the potential for mobile data in the world's fastest growing smartphone market.

The three operators bought airwaves worth a total 855.75 billion rupees ($13.6 billion), or about 78% of the total airwaves sold in the auction, telecoms minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.

India raised $17.6 billion from the auction after 19 days of fierce bidding, of which the government expects to receive about 288.72 billion rupees in initial payments, Prasad said.

"I would very earnestly appeal to the companies that national revenue is equally important for growth and India's image," the minister said, appealing to winning bidders to submit initial payments before the current fiscal year ends on March 31.

Spectrum revenue is crucial for the government to meet its ambitious fiscal target. The winners have until April 4 to make the upfront payment.

Idea Cellular, India's third-biggest mobile operator by market share, spent 303.06 billion rupees in the auction, the single biggest amount spent.

Market leader Bharti Airtel paid 293.10 billion rupees, while Vodafone Group India unit spent 259.59 billion rupees, according to figures provided by the minister.

Cash-rich Reliance Industries' telecoms unit spent 100.77 billion rupees before a widely anticipated commercial launch later this year.

Twitter launches video streaming app Periscope

Twitter has launched Periscope today, the live streaming app it acquired back in February.
Live streaming has become a hot topic in recent weeks: Meerkat, a similar app, has seen a slew of media attention, explosive growth, and recently raised $12 million at an estimated $40 million valuation. Twitter acquired then-unlaunched Periscope back in February for a rumoured $75 to $100 million.

Periscope lets users easily stream footage from their devices to their followers. Viewers can comment and send "hearts" to the streamer. The footage can be then replayed later - a key difference to Meerkat, where the footage is gone for good once the stream is over.

A large part of Twitter's appeal is its popularity with celebrities, and it looks like the company's hoping this star power can provide a similar draw to Periscope. "Breaking Bad" actor Aaron Paul, astronaut Chris Hadfield, magician David Blaine, high-profile businessman Mark Cuban and skateboarder Tony Hawk are among those already using the platform.

Twitter has also been limiting Meerkat's access to the network, seemingly in anticipation of the Periscope launch.

Periscope videos aren't integrated directly into Twitter - you have to install the separate app. Greater integration may come later, however. Twitter also owns Vine, a 6-second video app, and the clips can be embedded directly into users' Twitter timelines and viewed without leaving the main app.

Government planning open software policy: Telecom minister

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 25 Maret 2015 | 21.43

NEW DELHI: The government is shortly coming out with an 'open software policy' to further the process of transparency and credibility in administration, communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

"The Department of Posts and Common Service Centres with presence in nearly four lakh centres are being deployed to further empower less privileged people by digitalization," he said speaking at the IIIrd Web Ratna Awards ceremony.

Prasad called for collective approach of related government departments to create a friendly outlook.

He mentioned that the 'Digital India' initiative of the government is fundamentally aimed at making government more people-friendly and to bridge the gap between haves and have-not classes through digital empowerment.

He said that with an internet penetration of 300 million, India is only next to China in terms of reach and this number is all set to touch 500 million in a couple of years.

Huawei aims to sell 2 million Honor handsets this year: President

NEW DELHI: Chinese handset maker Huawei aims to sell two million units of its Honor range of handsets in India this year as it aims to target the "digital natives" in the country with the online-only brand.

The company has unveiled two new devices under the Honor range -- 4X (priced at Rs 10,499) and 6 Plus (Rs 26,499), which will be retailed through e-commerce major Flipkart.

It now has four devices under the Honor range.

"The dual brand strategy has been working well for us globally and in India. Last year, we sold 3,00,000 units of Honor devices and this year, we are looking at 7X growth in that number, at about 2 million. We are focused on bringing in devices that will appeal to Indian users," Honor president George Zhao told PTI.

He added that the company will bring one or two more devices under the range to India.

"We will bring in affordable and premium devices with the best possible technology for the digital natives," he said.

Increasingly, a number of companies are focusing on the tech-savvy youngsters, using e-commerce as the distribution channel.

While Motorola was one of the first handset vendors to sell its devices solely through online retail, China's Xiaomi and Micromax subsidiary Yu have also followed the same route.

Globally, Honor sold about 20 million units in 2014, raking in $2.4 billion in revenues. Overall, Huawei saw its handsets business revenues at about $12 billion last year.

According to research firm IDC, Huawei was the world's fourth largest smartphone vendor with 6.25% share.

It follows Korean electronics giant Samsung (20.01%), Apple (19.85%) and Lenovo (6.59%) in the tally in the October-December 2014 quarter.

Honor 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch display, 3GB RAM, Quad-core Cortex-A15 and quad-core Cortex-A7 processors, 32 GB internal memory, 4G support and 3,600 mAh battery. It also comes with a dual 8MP rear camera.

The Honor 4X is powered by a 1.2 GHz quadcore CPU and features a 5.5-inch display, Android KitKat OS, 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and 3,000 mAh battery.

Besides, the company has set up a Huawei Honor Fund, under which the company will contribute $0.1 from the sale of each device (4X and 6 Plus). This will be awarded to start ups and individuals working on ICT technology.

One in every three popular website 'dangerous': Study

WASHINGTON: A new study has revealed that one in three top websites that are most visited by people on the internet are 'risky.'

Menlo reviewed the top 1 million domains on the web for potential vulnerabilities and found that one in three could be categorized as 'risky,' meaning they had either been compromised already by hackers or were running vulnerable software that left them vulnerable to attack, reported CBS News.

Menlo although did not disclose which websites were vulnerable but most of the 'risky' sites were not porn sites or questionable domains. The report showed that a website related to transportation, health and medicine, technology or business was just as likely to put visitors at risk of exposure to damaging malware.

It also revealed that one in four of the most trusted sites including, education and government domains, were found to be vulnerable.

According to Menlo, 99% of malware infections came from basic Internet browsing.

Analysts cross-referenced 1.75 million URLs against a list of known malicious sites, checked the reputation of the IP address associated with each, and fingerprinted the software running each website to assess whether it had been updated with the latest security patches. About 21% of the websites had not been patched.

Apple Watch initial targets halved due to production issues: Report

NEW DELHI: It may not be very easy to get your hands on the Apple Watch when it goes up for sale according to a new rumour.

According to Chinese website UDN, Apple is facing several problems with the manufacturing of the Apple Watch. As noted by 9to5mac, problems while manufacturing the Apple Watch's flexible OLED display have reduced supplies and Apple's assembly partner Quanta is also experiencing problems due to the watch's small size.

The report mentions that only 30 to 40% of the Apple Watch OLED panels made by display partner LG are usable due to which Apple has cut its initial production targets from up to 3 million per month to around 1.5 million per month.

As noted by the blog, the report says that manufacturing the plastic-backed flexible OLED panels is different from the one used for glass-backed panels and "requires new methods of pulling a vacuum between the panel and the substrate."

Quanta, which is mainly a computer assembler, is reportedly facing problems adapting its manufacturing processes for the much smaller Watch, leading to supply issues.

Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge to be made in India

NEW DELHI: Samsung has launched its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones in India, within three weeks of the global launch, as the Korean electronics giant looks to compete with rival Apple's iPhone6.

The company said it will also manufacture the sixth edition of the flagship devices at its Noida facility in the first half of the year.

"India is among the select 20 countries for the first phase of launch of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The Indian R&D team has made a valuable contribution in making these smartphones... We also plan to begin manufacturing these devices in India in the first half of this year," Samsung India vice president marketing (mobile and IT) Asim Warsi told PTI.

He added that India-manufactured devices will be primarily targeted at the domestic consumption.

Warsi said the pre-booking for the devices is open from today and would be up for sale from April 10.

Samsung, which is the world's as well as India's largest smartphone player, had unveiled the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this month.

The company's facility at Noida has a capacity of producing over four million mobile phones a month and manufactures both affordable and high-end devices.

The Galaxy S6 will be offered in three storage options -- 32 GB (Rs 49,900), 64 GB (Rs 55,900) and 128 GB (Rs 61,900).

The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge is priced at Rs 58,900 (32 GB), Rs 64,900 (64GB), and Rs 70,900 (128 GB).

In the past years, Samsung's global competitor Apple has made inroads in the Indian smartphone market. Its latest offering -- the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus -- were launched in India in October 2014 with prices starting at Rs 53,500.

The high-end model was available for Rs 80,500 at the time of launch. Both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available in 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB versions.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will compete in the premium category, which accounts for less than a percent of sales in volume terms but about 20% in value terms.

According to IDC, about 22.5 million smartphones were shipped in India in the October-December 2014 quarter with Samsung accounting for 22 per cent share.

The Indian market, which is driven primarily by affordable devices, saw domestic firms like Micromax and Intex following in the tally with 18% and 8% share, respectively in the reported quarter.

The S6 and S6 Edge feature 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screens, have the world's first 14 nano meter mobile processor with 64-bit platform, 16 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras and 2,550 mAh battery (2,600 mAh in S6 Edge).
