Reliance Jio finalises key pacts for LTE roll-out

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries' telecom arm has finalised key agreements with technology partners and device manufacturers as it gets ready to launch the ambitious 4G services.

RIL chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL), a subsidiary of RIL, will provide "reliable fast internet connectivity on pan India basis".

Without giving timeframe for the launch, Ambani in the company's Annual Report for 2012-13 said that RJIL, formerly Infotel Broadband Services Ltd, has finished the planning for the infrastructure requirement for the pan-Indian project.

"RJIL has finalised key agreements with its technology partners, service providers, infrastructure providers, application partners, device manufacturers and other strategic partners for the project," he said.

Ambani also added that the firm has finalised the planning for venture's infra requirements.

"RJIL has also completed the detailed planning for Pan India implementation of the infrastructure needed for the project," he added.

On growth opportunities for broadband services in India, Ambani said that India has the potential to surpass the world and become a leader in delivery of digital content.

"From less than 5 million mobile users in 2001, India has grown to more than 860 million mobile users achieving more than 70 per cent teledensity. The enormous growth of the telecommunications in the country has not been accompanied by a corresponding growth of the broadband connections.

"Today, broadband in India has only around 1 per cent market penetration (15 million broadband connections - excluding Internet access by wireless phone subscribers) compared to other European and Asian countries," Ambani said.

RJIL, which is the only private player with Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum in all the 22 telecom circles of India, plans to provide reliable fast Internet connectivity through the 20 MHz, contiguous, pan-India BWA spectrum, he added.

"In addition to connectivity, RJIL also plans to enable end-to-end solutions that address the entire value chain across various digital services in key domains of national interest such as, education, healthcare, security, financial services," Ambani said.

RJIL plans to use TDD LTE technology for its country wide next generation network deployment to provide connectivity and related digital services to its customers, he added.

"In addition to LTE and its future versions, it will continue to evaluate and deploy other technologies, both wireless and wireline, to offer comprehensive broadband solutions to consumers, small businesses, enterprises, government and other entities," he said.

RJIL will focus on making available all the components of the entire digital value chain.

Indians watch over 3.7bn videos a month: comScore

NEW DELHI: Helped by rising number of people viewing videos on internet, India's online video consumption has doubled to 3.71 billion videos per month in the past two years, a report by global digital research firm comScore said.

Online video consumption in India stood at 1.86 billion per month as on March 2011. As per the firm's Video Metrix report, total online video audience in India grew by 69% to 54.02 million viewers in March 2013 compared to 31.94 million viewers in March 2011.

India currently has over 137 million Internet users. "Total online video consumption has doubled in the past two years to 3.7 billion videos per month. This dramatic growth has been driven by a sizable increase in the number of online video viewers, in addition to increasing consumption per viewer," comScore said.

Google websites, driven primarily by viewing at YouTube, ranked as the top online video property in March this year with 31.5 million unique viewers, followed by Facebook (18.6 million) and Yahoo sites (8.2 million), it added.

Video ad platforms VDOPIA (6.4 million viewers) and TubeMogul (5.5 million viewers) rounded out the top five, highlighting that these platforms can deliver reach similar to that of the top video content networks, comScore said.

"The rapid online video growth we're witnessing in India represents a significant opportunity for both marketers and media companies in India," comScore India senior director Kedar Gavane said.

Even in the mature markets of the US, online video has become one of the hottest sectors of because of the value marketers place on video ad inventory, he added.

"As the Indian online video market begins to realise the value of its existing inventory while continuing its growth in viewers and consumption time, there will be substantial upside for the key players in this market," Gavane added.

World's largest IT training centre opens in India

NEW DELHI: Offshore IT Training firm Koenig Solutions today unveiled its training campus in Delhi, which the firm claims is the world's largest offshore IT Training facility, providing end-to-end solutions to corporates.

The campus, spread over an area of 18,000 sq ft, includes 70 classrooms and 30 testing stations and provides end-to-end solutions including accommodation, examination facilities, meals, daily transport etc, which are part of the course fee.

"We have a total of five centres in India -- Goa, Shimla, Dehradhun, Delhi and Bangalore -- as well as a training facility in Dubai. There are plans in place to expand it further in more such tourist centres," Koenig Solutions CEO and founder Rohit Aggarwal told PTI.

The company is looking at setting up training facilities in cities like Chennai and Pune in India and globally in West, South and East Africa, he added.

"IT training and certification today is a $20 billion industry worldwide and the education tourism market in India alone could become $1 billion by 2020. Koenig's education tourism business model is unique and aims to tap this growing market," Aggrawal said.

Offshore IT training is catching up among corporates, IT employees and students in countries of Europe, Africa, Middle East, South East Asia as well as in Australia and New Zealand, given the lack of cost optimised quality training resources and infrastructure, he added.

Koenig claims to have trained more than 20,000 students from over 50 countries since its inception in 1993, and has seen its trainer pool swell to 250.

The firm offers over 100 IT courses and is the authorised training partner of Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, VMware, Novell, Adobe, EMC, Citrix, Linux Professional Institute, among others.

Nokia working on biggest-ever Lumia phone: Report

NEW DELHI: Seems mobile giant Nokia too is all set to join the big screen phones fray. Speculations are rife that the company is readying its biggest Lumia smartphone yet. According to a report in technology website GSMInsider, the Finnish manufacturer is working on a smartphone called Lumia 625 that has a 4.7-inch display. This screen size makes the display of the speculated device bigger than that of flagship Lumia 920 and the upcoming Lumia 928.

While details about the upcoming Lumia 625 are sparse, the report claims that this phone will have display resolution of 800x480p. This translates into pixel density of 199ppi, as compared to 332ppi of Lumia 920. These two phones will share the dual-core Snapdragon processor, with maximum clock speed of 1.5GHz.
The report says that Lumia 625 will be unveiled at an event in London on May 14. However, in case Nokia does not unveil it at the event, then it will be launched in June or July.

Nokia has also unveiled a low-end device called Asha 501, which is priced at $99 (before taxes). This new touchscreen phone is targeted at the segment dominated by low-cost Android smartphones. It runs on the revamped Asha platform and features Fastlane, which shows the 50 apps used last. Featuring just one hardware key under the touchscreen, its display wakes up when double tapped.

The manufacturer has said it will be available in 90 countries from June and will offer free Facebook access on Airtel and MTNL networks.

Infibeam to hire over 3,500 by 2015

AHMEDABAD: Ahmedabad-based e-tailer Infibeam is hiring aggressively. With the Rs 3,600 crore industry slated to double by 2015, Infibeam is in a rush to grow its human resource four times to attend to the increasing volumes.

"I want to have 5,000 people in our rolls by 2015," says Vishal Mehta, Infibeam founder, who has a team of 1,300 people servicing customers pan-India. He picked up seven students from Indian Institute of Management early this year for category management, finance, marketing and strategic business management roles, offering e-sops in addition to the regular packages in 2013. "With e-commerce looking promising, talent is keen to participate in the growth story with e-sops," he says.

A recent report by Franchise India has indicated that the Rs 3,600 cr industry would swell double its size by 2015. The current hiring would create additional 1 lakh jobs by 2015. Around 1-1.2 lakh workforce currently serves this space.

Tradus' rolls would swell to 1,000 from current 150 by 2015, Naaptol would intake additional 50 people for analystics, category management and marketing, Babyoye would double its strength to 300 by 2015, while Jabong.com would hire 350 more to have a team of 1,000 in place by 2015. Lifestyle e-tailer Myntra is hiring for technical, management and fashion-oriented roles, ET has learnt.

"In 2012 alone, hiring was 45-50% up over previous year. With promising growth prospects, this sector will need to fortify its people infrastructure to deal with the challenges in the e-commerce space," notes Chaitanya Aggarwal, founder and CEO, Juvalia & You. Juvalia expects its current workforce of 150 to grow four times by 2015.

With a big chunk of 137 million Indian internet users getting used to virtual shopping for apparel, accessories, books, music, jewelry, footwear, beauty and wellness, homes, et al, the industry is becoming a money-spinner. Indians are spending typically Rs 500-2000 per online transaction, thereby contributing to the industry's upswing, notes the E-Retail Report.

With all the shopping happening not just from homes or offices, but even by the consumer with his hand-held smart-gadgets on the move, there has been a spurt in demand for application developers.

Networking platform ApnaCircle has observed that programming and application development have been the top IT skills in demand in the last one year. "Looking at our own site's stats, along with the industry trends, over 60% of the HR executives plan to hire application developers this year," notes founder and CEO Yogesh Bansal.

Toshiba sees 34% jump in profit in FY14

TOKYO: Japan's Toshiba forecast a 34% jump in operating profit for this fiscal year, boosted by strong sales of its flash memory chips, but the outlook fell short of market expectations as it struggles to turn around its TV division.

Toshiba, a leading chipmaker in Japan and supplier to Apple, said on Wednesday it expects its operating profit to reach 260 billion yen ($2.6 billion) for the year ending March 31, 2014, missing the average forecast of 345.7 billion yen profit among 21 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Toshiba corporate executive vice president Makoto Kubo told reporters that the company had set a conservative estimate for this business year based on uncertainty in TV and computer markets, as well as risks related to its memory chip sales in the second half of the year.

Last month, SanDisk raised its revenue forecast for this year and said it expects NAND memory chips to fetch higher prices.

For the year that ended in March, Toshiba logged an operating profit of 194.3 billion yen, down 4.1% from the previous year and undershooting its January guidance of 260 billion yen and an average 251.80 billion yen profit expected by 21 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The No. 2 maker of NAND flash memory chips after Samsung Electronics, which also competes against Hitachi in nuclear reactors, blamed the weak performance on a 24.4 billion yen operating loss in its digital products division, which makes televisions and personal computers.

The TV division alone accounted for 50 billion yen in losses in 2012/13.

Shares in Toshiba, a $22 billion firm that employs more than 2,00,000 people worldwide and is one of Japan's biggest exporters, have rallied 52% since the beginning of the year, compared with a 37% rise on Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average.

Apple seeks Android source code from Google: Report

NEW DELHI: In its patent war with Samsung, US technology titan Apple seems to have finally taken the fight to Google. The company founded by late visionary Steve Jobs has asked a US court to direct the world's biggest internet search company to handover the source code of its Android operating system.

According to a news report in Bloomberg Businessweek, Apple told the US court that Google is "improperly withholding" data that it requested in the pre-trial information sharing stage. Apple has sought this information in the second-patent infringement case it has filed at the San Jose court. As per the court filing, the iPhone maker has argued that Android is used in all of Samsung's allegedly infringing products and "provides much of the accused functionality."

The latest development in the war between Apple and Samsung comes in the lawsuit that includes patent violation charges on phones like iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III.

However, a lawyer for Google (but who also represents Samsung in the case) told the court that the Tim Cook-led company made this "strategic decision to keep Google off the complaint." He said that the internet search giant does not have the same legal rights as the Apple and Samsung in this case "with respect to reciprocal discovery," the report states.

Apple and Samsung are embroiled in a patent battles across various parts of the world. One of the biggest judgements in the matter came last year, when a US jury concluded that Samsung has violated Apple patents and awarded the latter $1.05 billion. However, this sum was slashed later to $450.5 million by the court and a new date to determine final damages in the case was set.

How BSNL, MTNL defy industry trend

NEW DELHI: Defying the trend wherein telecom industry lost subscribers in the October-December quarter, state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL about three lakh users during the three months.

BSNL added 2.9 lakh new users, highest during the quarter, while MTNL added 10,000 subscribers, sectoral regulator Trai said in its performance indicator report.

Led by the net additions, BSNL has also increased its market share to 11.56 per cent in December 2012 from 10.99 per cent in September 2012.

Barring Quadrant ( HFCL), which added 90,000 users, all the other private operators together lost around 42 million subscribers during the three months.

"In terms of net additions during the quarter, BSNL (0.29 million) has added the highest number of subscribers, followed by Quadrant (0.09 million) and MTNL (0.01 million). All other service providers recorded negative growth during the quarter," Trai said.

Reliance Communications lost the maximum of 16.32 million users followed by Tata Teleservices (8.80 million), Vodafone (5.19), market leader Bharti Airtel (4.02 million), Aircel (3.26 million), Sistema Shyam Teleservices (1.71 million) and Idea Cellular (1.52 million) during the reported period, Trai said.

BSNL attributed the net additions as a result of better quality of service and good coverage.

"We are providing better quality of service by improving the operations and maintenance of network. Also we have deployed more equipment in improving the coverage and capacity under phase 7 of GSM project," BSNL CMD R K Upadhyay told PTI.

Besides, the public sector company has strengthened the sales and marketing force while increasing the number of franchisees, he said.

BSNL franchisees have been increased to 2,135 as on March 31, 2013 from 1,599 in 2009. In the same way, retailers have been increased to 5.02 lakh. The company now has 66,828 direct selling agents.

Idea negotiating outsourcing costs with IBM

MUMBAI: Idea Cellular is negotiating with its outsourcing partners to lower costs of operations and improve profitability. Its key vendors include IT partner IBM and tower leasing vendor GTL Infrastructure, said two people involved in the negotiations.

With IBM, Idea is trying to drive down the revenue share component as it has more than met the subscriber numbers promised in the original deal, while it is asking GTL Infra to lower tower rentals that are now higher than the current market rate due to the gradual escalation in the past five years, the two said.

Idea is trying to cut costs as profitability is under pressure with high airwave and licence fees, imposition of charges by the Department of Telecommunications, and cut-throat competition that has kept call rates on the decline for over half a decade.

Idea Cellular signed an outsourcing deal with IBM in 2007, with the clause that the contract could be extended and renegotiated at the end of the first five years.

The person explained that the original $700 million (approximately Rs 3,700 crore) value in 2007 was based on a per subscriber revenue share, which the company is now trying to lower as it has added more subscribers than it has estimated in the year of signing the contract.

Since then, Idea Cellular has expanded its network from just 11 service areas to an all-India network of 22 service areas. The company's subscriber base touched 121.6 million this March from 14.6 million in April 2007. "Negotiations are still preliminary, but we should be able to lower the share that goes to IBM to some degree," said one of the two persons.

Windows 8: What is Microsoft's dilemma

SEATTLE: With Windows 8, Microsoft made bold changes to the look of the software that powers most personal computers. But those moves may have been too aggressive for some customers, the company now concedes.

Microsoft revealed that it had sold 100 million licenses for its flagship software since it was released six months ago. That was roughly the same number of licenses it sold for the well-received, previous version of the system, Windows 7, in about the same time period.

Yet Windows 8 has struck a sour note with parts of the computer-buying public. With Windows 8, Microsoft replaced the operating system's traditional appearance with an interface that looks like a screen of tiles. The change left some customers cold, and though they could switch between the old and the new look, it apparently was not clear enough to some of them how to do it.

In an interview, Tami Reller, chief marketing officer and chief financial officer of Microsoft's Windows division, said an update to the software, code-named Windows Blue, was coming later this year. It will include modifications that make the software easier to figure out, especially on computers without touchscreens.

"The learning curve is real and needs to be addressed," Reller said.

There was another problem. The tile look was meant for people using touch-screen computers, and there are not many of those devices running Windows yet available. Researchers at market analyst IDC estimate that Microsoft sold only about 900,000 of its Surface tablets during the first quarter of the year, about 1.8 per cent of the overall market. Other Windows tablet makers like Acer accounted for additional sales.

By comparison, Apple, with iPad sales of 19.5 million, accounted for 39.6 per cent.

Much to the disappointment of PC makers like Dell and Hewlett-Packard, Windows 8 has not helped fend off competition from devices like the iPad. Global shipments of PCs fell 13.9 per cent to 76.3 million units during the first quarter of the year when compared with the same period a year ago - the worst showing in two decades, according to IDC. Tablet shipments grew 142.4 per cent to 49.2 million units in that same period, IDC estimates.

Windows 8 was supposed to bridge tablets and traditional personal computers with software made for touch screens that had the option to switch to the desktop interface whenever someone wanted to create a PowerPoint slide or work on an Excel spreadsheet using a keyboard and mouse.

Microsoft envisioned a bounty of new Windows 8 touchscreen devices, including laptops with displays that also respond to finger gestures.

But that has not panned out. The majority of personal computers on store shelves have been more old-fashioned keyboard-based systems.

"If you're not going to provide the proper environment for people to understand how to use the system, you risk losing a lot of people who used the system for a decade," said David Daoud, an analyst at IDC.

Reller said Microsoft would reveal more about the Windows 8 changes in the coming weeks, but she declined to confirm they would include an option to bypass the new tile interface at startup, as recent reports on technology news sites have said.

Reller added that Microsoft had already trained its retail partners to remind customers that the old desktop interface still exists in Windows 8.

"We started talking about the desktop as an app," she said. "But in reality, for PC buyers, the desktop is important."

Microsoft's own research on Windows 8 usage patterns showed customer satisfaction with the system was on par with that of Windows 7, if the users being analyzed have tablets or other systems with touch screens, Reller said. People with conventional PCs are not as happy.

"We need to help them learn faster," she said.

Joshua Blood, an audio engineer in Hudson, Mass., put Windows 8 on one of his existing computers, but took it off after a few days, deciding that the software only made sense if he had a touch-screen machine. "I can do absolutely everything I need to do in Windows 7, and it's a nice-looking OS," Blood said. While the 100 million licenses for Windows 8 sounds impressive, that figure does not indicate how many people are actually using the new operating system. That is because a significant portion of Microsoft's Windows sales occur through multiyear contracts with business customers, who are allowed to pick which version of the operating system they run on their computers.

So while business customers who signed such deals since Windows 8 came out are counted among the licenses sold, many may have downgraded to Windows 7. Al Gillen, an IDC analyst, estimates that about 40 per cent of Microsoft's Windows sales are to customers with such downgrade rights.

Gillen said such a pattern among business customers, who tend to adopt new software cautiously, was common when new versions of Windows are released.

Google files patent for Policy Violation Checker tool

WASHINGTON: Google has reportedly filed a patent for a tool that will detect potentially problematic phrases or words from electronic correspondence, which in turn, will help companies or individuals avoid lawsuits.

Like a spell checker that detects misspelled words and offers alternate spellings from its existing database, the tool, called 'Policy Violation Checker', will also offer alternative words or phrases that are 'less risky' from a database created by the user in accordance with the company's policy, the Huffington Post reports.

According to the report, Google's new tool will not only detect potentially problematic phrases but also inform the third party about the breach of policies in the particular document.

This technology will be applicable to electronic correspondence including e-mails, word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc and can be customised to be run on any type of processing device like a computer, set-top box, mobile phone or other type of processing device.

According to the report, a 'problematic word or phrase' may denote some phrases or words from Google's database, which may potentially violate the protocols of the company.

However, Google indicates that this technology is of importance to business companies and domestic monitoring is not the intended motive of this tool.

Samsung India eyes 10% revenue from enterprise biz

NEW DELHI: Samsung India today said it is targeting to garner up to 10% of revenues from enterprise business this year.

"In terms of enterprise business, we are targeting to achieve approximately 5-10% by the end of this year of overall Samsung India revenues," Samsung director (enterprise business) Akash Saxenaa told PTI.

The company will be focussing on education and insurance sectors in order to meet the target.

Sensing huge demand in education for its solutions, Samsung in partnership with Modern School today launched a pilot initiative wherein the company has provided 42 Galaxy Note 10.1 devices and a 65-inch interactive white-board to the school.

The Samsung School solution being implemented in Modern School, has already been deployed in many Korean schools as a pilot and is currently being implemented in over 20 schools around the world, Saxenaa said.

The solution enables instant sharing of screen content of a teacher's device to students' personal devices.

"This gives the teachers the ability to lead interactive lessons and real-time group activities through screen and content sharing features," he added.

Asked if all the students will be provided Galaxy devices, Saxenaa said the company is in talks with the school regarding the issue.

Govt can now snoop on your SMSs, online chats

BANGALORE/DELHI: The government last month quietly began rolling out a project that gives it access to everything that happens over India's telecommunications network—online activities, phone calls, text messages and even social media conversations. Called the Central Monitoring System, it will be the single window from where government arms such as the National Investigation Agency or the tax authorities will be able to monitor every byte of communication.

But privacy and internet freedom advocates are worried that in the name of security, the government could end up snooping on people, possibly abusing a system that does not have enough safeguards to protect ordinary citizens.

"In the absence of a strong privacy law that promotes transparency about surveillance and thus allows us to judge the utility of the surveillance, this kind of development is very worrisome," warned Pranesh Prakash, director of policy at the Centre for Internet and Society. "Further, this has been done with neither public nor parliamentary dialogue, making the government unaccountable to its citizens."

After the Mumbai blasts in November 2008, the government has been arming itself with powers and technology to help it eavesdrop on digital communications. The information technology law, enacted in 2000 and amended twice in 2008 and 2011, gives designated government officials the authority to listen in on phone calls, read SMSes, emails, and monitor websites.

Such access is allowed for purposes of "reasonable security practices and procedures."

However, Pavan Duggal, a Supreme Court advocate specialising in cyberlaw, said the government has given itself unprecedented powers to monitor private internet records of citizens. "This system is capable of tremendous abuse," he said. The Central Monitoring System, being set up by the Centre for Development of Telematics, plugs into telecom gear and gives central and state investigative agencies a single point of access to call records, text messages and emails as well as the geographical location of individuals.

Duggal, who closely follows New Delhi's battle with internet firms, said there hasn't been much details from the government on what exactly the system intends to monitor and under what conditions.

In December 2012, the then information technology minister Milind Deora told Parliament that the monitoring system, on which the government is spending Rs 400 crore, will "lawfully intercept internet and telephone services".

Work on the system has been kept under wraps for nearly two years. Several government agencies have issued tenders seeking specialised equipment and systems for such monitoring.

As part of modernisation, the home ministry is updating all its offices in state capitals with such gear. C-Dot group head Shikha Srivastava declined comment. Information technology ministry spokeswoman Mamta Verma redirected the queries to Gulshan Rai, director of India's Cyber Emergency Response Team, but Rai declined comment.

With over 100 million users, India is one of the fastest-growing internet markets in the world. The government has come under criticism from activists for increased censorship and tracking of user records. Internet activist group Anonymous has started raising the pitch against the monitoring system, claiming that security is just a pretext for spying on citizens.

Disclosures by Google show that the number of requests from the government seeking personal information has been on the rise. In the second half of 2012, the government made nearly 2,500 requests, Google said.

"Even legitimate conversations could end up being tracked," cautioned Duggal, the Supreme Court lawyer.

SEBI approves angel fund for Startup Village

KOCHI: In a major boost to the country's first telecom incubator 'Startup Village', market regulator SEBI has approved the Startup Village angel fund of $10 million that could go up to $20 million with a 'Green Shoe' (over-allotment) option.

The approval for the angel fund, which would address the problem of resource crunch for startup companies across the country, came from SEBI through a notification issued on April 23, a press release here said.

The focus area of the fund will be telecom/internet, and it would start investing once the initial close of $2 million is achieved.

KPMG is Advisor and ILFS is Trustee of the fund. Welcoming the SEBI's approval, Kris Gopalakrishnan Infosys co-founder and Startup Village chief mentor said, "It will act like a shot in the arm for Startup Village, which would become the first incubator in India to have its own in-house fund. It will help the Internet-Telecom incubator to get the most conducive ecosystem for product startups."

The need to create the fund was felt as the angel investment ecosystem in India is still maturing, and for the vision of Startup Village to have a 1000 product startups by 2020, it has to influence policy, infrastructure for incubators/accelerators, angel network and angel funds, he said.

The angel fund will be investing not only in the most promising startups located in Startup Village but also in similar enterprises across the country. "We are looking to broad-base the investor profile with a large set of angel investors, many of whom might be first time angel investors in India," Startup Village Chairman Sanjay Vijayakumar said.

Google Glass: Not yet launched but already banned

SAN FRANCISCO: Google's wearable computer, the most anticipated piece of electronic wizardry since the iPad and iPhone, will not go on sale for many months.

But the critics are already in a lather.

The glasses-like device, which allows users to access the internet, take photos and film short snippets, has been pre-emptively banned by a Seattle bar. Large parts of Las Vegas will not welcome wearers. West Virginia legislators tried to make it illegal to use the gadget, known as Google Glass, while driving.

"This is just the beginning," said Timothy Toohey, a Los Angeles lawyer specialising in privacy issues. "Google Glass is going to cause quite a brawl."

As personal technology becomes increasingly nimble and invisible, Glass is prompting questions of whether it will distract drivers, upend relationships and, above all, strip people of what little privacy they still have in public.

A pair of lens-less frames with a tiny computer attached to the right earpiece, Glass is promoted by Google as "seamless and empowering." It will have the ability to capture any chance encounter, from a celebrity sighting to a grumpy sales clerk, and broadcast it to millions in seconds.

"We are all now going to be both the paparazzi and the paparazzi's target," said Karen L Stevenson, a lawyer with Buchalter Nemer in Los Angeles.

Google stresses that Glass is a work in progress, with test versions now being released to 2,000 developers. Another 8,000 "explorers," people handpicked by Google, will soon get a pair.

Among the safeguards to make it less intrusive: You have to speak or touch it to activate it, and you have to look directly at someone to take a photograph or video of them.

"We are thinking very carefully about how we design Glass because new technology always raises new issues," said Courtney Hohne, a Google spokeswoman.

Developers, however, are already cracking the limits of Glass. One created a small sensation in tech circles last week with a programme that eliminated the need for gestures or voice commands. To snap a picture, all the user needs to do is wink.

The 5 Point Cafe, a Seattle dive bar, was apparently the first to explicitly ban Glass. In part it was a publicity stunt - extremely successful, too, as it garnered worldwide attention - but the bar's owner, Dave Meinert, said there was a serious side. The bar, he said, was "kind of a private place."

The legislators in West Virginia were not joking at all. The state banned texting while driving last year but hands-free devices are permitted. That left a loophole for Google Glass. The legislation was introduced too late to gain traction before the most recent session ended, but its sponsor says he is likely to try again.

In Las Vegas, a Caesars Entertainment spokesman noted that computers and recording devices were prohibited in casinos. "We will not allow people to wear Glass while gambling or attending our shows," he said.

Glass is arriving just as the courts, politicians, privacy advocates, regulators, law enforcement and tech companies are once again arguing over the boundaries of technology in every walk of life.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted last month to require law enforcement to have a warrant to access email, not just a subpoena. The FBI's use of devices that mimic cellphone towers to track down criminals is being challenged in an Arizona case. A California district court recently ruled that private messages on social media were protected without a warrant.

"Google Glass will test the right to privacy versus the First Amendment," said Bradley Shear, a social media expert at George Washington University.

Google has often been at the forefront of privacy issues. In 2004, it began a free email service, making money by generating ads against the content. Two dozen privacy groups protested. Regulators were urged to investigate whether eavesdropping laws were being violated.

For better or worse, people got used to the idea, and the protests quickly dissipated. Gmail now has over 425 million users.

In a more recent episode, the company's unauthorised data collection during its Street View mapping project prompted government investigations in a dozen countries.

Like many Silicon Valley companies, Google takes the attitude that people should have nothing to hide from intrusive technology.

"If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place," said Eric Schmidt, then Google's chief executive, in 2009.

Glass is a major step in Google's efforts to diversify beyond search, and potentially an extremely lucrative move. Piper Jaffray, an analyst firm, estimates that wearable technology and another major initiative, self-driving cars, could ultimately be a $500 billion opportunity for the company.

In the shorter term, IHS, a forecasting firm, estimates that shipments of smart glasses, led by Google Glass, could be as high as 6.6 million in three years.

Thad Starner, a pioneer of wearable computing who is a technical adviser to the Glass team, says he thinks concerns about disruption are overblown.

"Asocial people will be able to find a way to do asocial things with this technology, but on average people like to maintain the social contract," Starner said. He added that he and colleagues had experimented with Glass-type devices for years, "and I can't think of a single instance where something bad has happened."

An incident at a Silicon Valley event shows, however, the way the increasing ease in capturing a moment can lead to problems - even if unintentionally.

Adria Richards, who worked for the Colorado email company SendGrid, was offended by the jokes two men were cracking behind her at the PyCon developers conference. She posted a picture of them on Twitter with the mildly reproving comment, "Not cool."

One of the men, who has not been identified, was immediately fired by his employer, PlayHaven. "There is another side to this story," he wrote on a hacking site, saying it was barely one lame sexual joke.

"She gave me no warning, she smiled while she snapped the pic and sealed my fate," he complained.

Critics lashed out at Richards, using language much more offensive than the two men used. SendGrid was hacked. The company dismissed Richards, saying there was such an uproar over her conduct, it "put our business in danger."

"I don't think anyone who was part of what happened at PyCon that day could possibly have imagined how this issue would have exploded into the public consciousness," Richards reflected later. She has not posted on Twitter since.

Facebook India user base up 50% in Q1

NEW DELHI: An expanding user count in India and Brazil helped the world's largest social networking site Facebook to increase its monthly active users (MAUs) to a whopping 1.11 billion in the first quarter of 2013.

The ubiquitous social networking platform's MAUs rose by 23% in January-March quarter of 2013 compared to the year-ago period.

MAUs are a measure of the size of its global active user community.

MAU's in India doubled to 78 million in Q1 2013 compared to Q1 2012, while the users in Brazil rose by 62% to 73 million during the same period.

"As of March 31, 2013, we had 1.11 billion MAUs, an increase of 23 per cent from March 31, 2012. Users in Brazil and India represented key sources of growth in the first quarter of 2013 relative to the prior year," Facebook said in a filing to the US Securities Exchange Commission (SEC).

The US-based firm defines MAUs as a registered Facebook user who logged in and visited Facebook through the website or a mobile device or took an action to share content or activity with his/her Facebook friends or connections via a third-party website that is integrated with Facebook, in the last 30 days as of the date of measurement.

"We had 73 million MAUs in Brazil as of March 31, 2013, an increase of 62% compared to the same period in 2012 ; and we had 78 million MAUs in India as of March 31, 2013, an increase of 50% compared to the same period in 2012," the filing added.

The company said that users accessing the site on their mobiles or handheld devices are increasing internationally.

Globally, mobile MAUs rose by 54% to 751 million as of March 2013 from 488 million year-ago period, especially in India, Brazil and the US, it said.

"In all regions, an increasing number of our MAUs are accessing Facebook through mobile devices with users in India, Brazil, and the US representing key sources of mobile growth over the first quarter of 2013 as compared to fourth quarter of 2012," the social networking site noted in the filing.

Mobile MAUs is a user who accessed Facebook via a mobile app or via mobile-optimised versions of the website such as m.facebook.com, whether on a mobile phone or tablet such as the iPad, during the period of measurement.

About 189 million mobile MAUs accessed Facebook solely through mobile apps or the mobile website during the month ended March 31, 2013, a jump of 20% from 157 million during the month ended December 31, 2012.

The remaining 562 million mobile MAUs accessed Facebook from both personal computers and mobile devices during that month.

Worldwide daily active users (DAUs) rose by 26 per cent to 665 million on average during March 2013 from 526 million during March, 2012.

"We experienced growth in DAUs across major markets, including Brazil, India and the US," it said.

Facebook, LinkedIn lead in lobbying for immigration

WASHINGTON: The television advertisement that hit the airwaves in Florida last month featured the Republican Party's rising star, Sen. Marco Rubio, boasting about his get-tough plan for border security.

But most viewers who watched the commercial, sponsored by a new group that calls itself Americans for a Conservative Direction, may be surprised to learn who bankrolled it: senior executives from Silicon Valley, like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn, who run companies where the top employees donate mostly to Democrats.

The advertising blitz reflects the sophisticated lobbying campaign being waged by these technology companies and their executives.

They have managed to secure much of what they want in the landmark immigration bill now pending in Congress, provisions that would allow them to fill thousands of job vacancies with foreign-born engineers. At the same time, they have openly encouraged lawmakers to make it harder for consulting companies in India and elsewhere to provide foreign workers temporarily to this country.

Those deals were worked out through what Senate negotiators acknowledged was extraordinary access by American technology companies to staff members who drafted the bill. The companies often learned about detailed provisions even before all the members of the so-called Gang of Eight senators who worked out the package were informed.

"We are very pleased with the progress and happy with what's in the bill," said Peter J Muller, a former House aide who now works as the director of government relations at Intel. "It addresses many of the issues we've been advocating for for years."

Now, along with other industry heavyweights, including the US Chamber of Commerce, the technology companies are trying to make sure the law gets passed - which explains the political-style television advertising campaign, sponsored by a group that has revealed no details about how much money it gets from its individual supporters.

The industry also hopes to get more from the deal by working to remove some regulatory restrictions in the proposal, including on hiring foreign workers and firing Americans.

Silicon Valley was once politically aloof before realizing in recent years that its future profits depended in part on battles here in Washington. Its effort to influence immigration legislation is one of its most sophisticated.

The technology industry "understands there's probably not a tremendous amount of resistance to their part of the bill," Rubio said in an interview last week, saying he welcomed the industry support. "But their future and getting the reform passed is tied to the overall bill."

The bill has a good chance of winning passage in the Senate. The hardest sell will come in the House, where many conservative Republicans see the deal as too generous to immigrants who came to this nation illegally.

Rob Jesmer, a former top Republican Senate strategist who helps run the new Zuckerberg-backed nonprofit group that sponsored the Rubio ad, insisted that his organization's push is based on the personal convictions of the executives who donated to the cause and who believe immigration laws need to be changed. Those convictions just happen to line up with what their corporations are lobbying for as well, he said.

"It will give a lot of people who are educated in this country who are already here a chance to remain in the United States," Jesmer said, "and encourage entrepreneurs from all over the world to come to the United States and create jobs."

The profound transition underway inside Silicon Valley companies is illustrated by their lobbying disclosure reports filed in Congress. Facebook's lobbying budget swelled from $351,000 in 2010 to $2.45 million in the first three months of this year, while Google spent a record $18 million last year.

That boom in spending translates into hiring of top talent in the art of Washington deal-making. These companies have hired people like Joel D Kaplan, a onetime deputy chief of staff in the Bush administration who now works for Facebook; Susan Molinari, a former House Republican from New York who is now a Google lobbyist; and outside lobbyists like Steven Elmendorf, a former chief of staff to Richard A. Gephardt, a former House majority leader who works for Facebook.

The immigration fight, which has unified technology companies perhaps more than any other issue, has brought the lobbying effort to new heights. The industry sees it as a fix to a stubborn problem: job vacancies, particularly for engineers.

"We are not able to fill all the jobs that we are creating," Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, told the Senate Judiciary Committee late last month.

Chief executives met with President Barack Obama to discuss immigration. Venture capitalists testified in Congress. Their lobbyists roamed the Senate corridors to make sure their appeals were considered in the closed-door negotiations among the Gang of Eight, which included Rubio and Senator Charles E Schumer, D-NY, who have been particularly receptive.

In the many phone calls and hallway asides on Capitol Hill this year, those lobbyists realized that they had to give a little to get a lot of what they wanted. At the top of their wish list was an expansion of a temporary visa program called the H -1B, which allows companies to hire foreigners for jobs in the United States. There are a limited number of H-1Bs available each year, and fierce competition for them.

Companies like Facebook and Intel use them largely to bring workers to their own offices. Consulting companies like Tata, based in India, use them to supply computer workers at American banks, oil companies and sometimes software firms.

Critics of H-1B visas point out that they mostly bring workers at the lowest pay scales. The technology industry's main rivals in these negotiations were lawmakers who have long been critical of guest worker visa programs, chiefly Senator Richard J Durbin and groups that represent American engineers.

Silicon Valley lobbyists told Senate negotiators they agreed that the H1-B visa system had been subject to abuse. Go after the companies that take advantage of guest worker visas and give us the benefit of the doubt, they told the Senate staff members, according to interviews with several lobbyists.

"You know and we know there are some bad people in this system," is how Scott Corley, the president of Compete America, a technology industry coalition, recalled the conversation. "We are simply trying to make sure that as they are pursuing the rats they are not sinking the ship."

That acknowledgment, several lobbyists said privately, helped unlock an impasse in negotiations.

What emerged was a Senate measure that allows American technology companies to procure many more skilled guest worker visas, raising the limit to 110,000 a year from 65,000 under current law, along with a provision to expand it further based on market demand. The bill would also allow these companies to move workers on guest visas more easily to permanent resident visas, freeing up more temporary visas for these companies.

But it requires them to pay higher wages for guest workers and to post job openings on a website, so Americans can have a chance at them. And it draws a line in the sand between these technology firms and the mostly Indian companies that supply computer workers on H-1B visas for short-term jobs at companies in the United States.

"This provision accomplishes the goal of discouraging abuse of the program while providing an important incentive for companies to bring top talent to work in the United States for the long term, where they will contribute to our economy," said Kaplan, the former Republican White House aide who is now the vice president for US public policy at Facebook.

The bill is written in such a way that it penalizes companies that have a large share of foreign guest workers among their US workforces, eventually making it impossible for them to bring in any more. It allows large American companies that have many more American workers to continue to import workers. And it includes a provision that exempts from the guest worker count those employees that companies sponsor for green cards, essentially a bonus to American businesses like Facebook whose workforces are growing fast.

Companies that provide temporary foreign workers say the move is intended to push them out of the American market.

These companies, mostly based in India, have far less good will on Capitol Hill. Their hope now rests with persuading lawmakers that it would be counterproductive to punish them.

"Why are we in the United States? We are there because American corporations want us," said Som Mittal, the president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies, which represents Indian companies. "We help them become competitive and serve their customers better."

In interviews, Rubio and an aide to Schumer said the draft bill takes a balanced approach to penalize those who do not hire American workers for jobs here. They say the proposal is good for the country, even as it may benefit American technology firms.

In March, some of the biggest figures in the technology industry, including Zuckerberg, the Microsoft founder Bill Gates and the venture capitalist John Doerr, unveiled a new nonprofit advocacy group, called Fwd.Us, with its first mission being to push Congress to overhaul immigration law. The group has hired lobbyists and a staff of veteran political operatives.

One of its first campaigns was to bankroll the television ad for Rubio. Two other ads backed Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, who is considered a critical swing vote, in a state where there are many critics of the legislation. Jesmer said the group spent "in the seven figures" on the ads.

Rubio has been a vocal ally. He says he understands the industry's need for talent and wants to prevent companies from having to ship work overseas.

To negotiate the details on the immigration bill, Rubio hired Enrique Gonzalez, who took a leave from a law firm that handles H-1B visa applications for many technology companies. Gonzalez said the assignment presented no conflict of interest because he works with universities handling visas, not technology companies.

The fact that technology lobbyists were given an unusual degree of access to the negotiators on the bill is entirely justified, he said.

"Because of the unique needs of the technology industry, the newness of it, the novelty of a lot of the issues they are confronting, I think that was why there were more engaged than some of the other industries were," he said.

BSNL may report lower losses for FY13

NEW DELHI: State-owned telecom operator BSNL is expected to announce lower losses, at Rs 8,198 crore, for 2012-13 fiscal.

In 2011-12, it had reported losses of Rs 8,851 crore. "As per unaudited figures, BSNL loss stands at Rs 8,198 crore. It will be audited and then the final numbers will be released," said an official.

The figure does not include around Rs 2,700 crore which the company has to get from the government for supporting rural landline operations.

The company registered losses of Rs 8,850.70 crore during 2011-12 due to regulatory expenses and non-receipt of funds for its rural landlines operations. It stated the impact to be about Rs 3,100 crore.

BSNL has been logging losses since 2009-10. The company's profits had started declining after 2004-05, when it had made net gains of Rs 10,183 crore.

During 2010-11, BSNL losses had risen to Rs 6,384 crore mainly due to hefty outgo on salaries and expenses borne by the PSU for procuring 3G and BWA spectrum.

WASHINGTON: A Michigan woman has been accused of creating a Facebook account to stalk herself.

Cheryl Nelson, a 52-year-old, complained to sheriff's deputies that she was the victim of stalking, harassment and other crimes.

According to Fox News, but authorities learned that she set up a Facebook account with her ex-boyfriend's information and made it appear that his new girlfriend was using it to harass her.

Detective Jason Russo of the sheriff's department said Nelson could not let go of her relationship with her former boyfriend.

MLive.com reported that Nelson is charged with falsely reporting a felony. She could not be reached for comment Saturday, the report added.

In his weekly address to the nation, Obama said the "commonsense immigration reform bill" introduced in the Senate is a compromise, which means that nobody got everything they wanted - including him.

"But it's largely consistent with the principles I've laid out from the beginning," he said.

"It would continue to strengthen security at our borders and hold employers more accountable if they knowingly hire undocumented workers. It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally," Obama said.

"It would modernise our legal immigration system so that we're able to reunite families and attract the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will help create good paying jobs and grow our economy. These are all commonsense steps that the majority of Americans support. So there's no reason that immigration reform can't become a reality this year," he said in his weekly web and radio address to the nation.

Addressing the nation, in the midst of his ongoing trip to Mexico and Costa Rica, Obama said he is there because Latin America represents an incredible opportunity for the United States, especially when it comes to his top priority as President: creating good, middle-class jobs.

"On Friday, we learned that our businesses created another 176,000 jobs last month. That's 2.2 million new jobs over the past year, and 6.8 million new jobs over the past 38 months. But as I've said before, I won't be satisfied until everyone who wants a job can find one. If this sounds like a little too much DIY medical care, well, the idea isn't to self-diagnose with Dr iPhone. But companies are rapidly developing miniature medical devices that tap the power of the ubiquitous smartphone in hopes of changing how people monitor their own health.

"We wanted to make sure they have all the right tools available in their pocket" is how Joseph Flaherty of AgaMatrix describes his company's tiny glucose monitor. Diabetics can plug the iBGStar into the bottom of an iPhone and check blood sugar on the go without carrying an extra device.

This mobile medicine also might help doctors care for patients in new ways. In March, prominent San Diego cardiologist Eric Topol tweeted "no emergency landing req'd" when he used his smartphone EKG to diagnose a distressing but not immediately dangerous irregular heartbeat in a fellow airplane passenger at 30,000 feet.

And the University of California, San Francisco, hopes to enroll a staggering 1 million people in its Health eHeart Study to see whether using mobile technology, including smartphone tracking of people's heart rate and blood pressure, could help treat and prevent cardiovascular disease.

The question: Do smartphone devices really work well enough for the average patient and primary care doctor to dive in, or are early adopters just going for the cool factor? Many of the tools cost $100 to $200, there's little public sales information yet, and it's not clear how insurers will handle the fledgling trend.

"Technology sometimes evolves faster than we're ready for it," cautioned Dr Glen Stream of the American Academy of Family Physicians. "We're recognising more and more that not all care needs to be delivered face to face," but only if people measure the right things and have a relationship with a doctor to help make good use of the findings, he stressed.

Addressing a recent TEDMED conference in Washington, Dr Susan Desmond-Hellmann, UCSF's chancellor, put the challenge this way: "How does mobile monitoring become something more than a toy, or something interesting? How does it connect to how I'm cared for by my caregiver?"

About 300 doctors, health policy wonks and others attending that high-tech meeting received what was dubbed a "smartphone physical" from medical students using 10 of the latest devices. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a number of the gadgets for sale; others are experimental prototypes gathered for the demonstration by Nurture by Steelcase and the doctor website Medgadget.

"It's going to be our generation that adopts most of these," noted Shiv Gaglani, a Johns Hopkins medical student who helped organise the project.

The FDA cites industry estimates that 500 million smartphone users worldwide will use some type of health app by 2015. Today's apps mostly are educational tools, digital health diaries or reminders and fitness sensors. The new trend is toward more sophisticated medical apps, some that work with plug-in devices, that provide information a doctor might find useful.

Some of the devices sell by prescription or on drugstore shelves, while others like the diabetes monitor and blood pressure cuff have entered a new venue for medicine - the Apple store.

Simplicity is part of the idea. Take the AliveCor Heart Monitor. Snap it on like a smartphone case, place fingers on the sensors - no sticky wires on the chest - and you've got an EKG recording in 30 seconds. The FDA approved sale of the $199 device in December for doctors to use in exams or to prescribe for patients to use on themselves.

It doesn't measure as much as a full-scale EKG, and patients must email the recording to a doctor for analysis. But heart patients frequently experience palpitations that have ended by the time they reach a cardiologist -- and emailing an on-the-spot EKG reading might help the doctor figure out what happened, said AliveCor co-founder Dr Dave Albert.

"This is a brand-new technology. We're trying to understand how people will use it," said Albert, whose company also is seeking FDA permission to sell the device over the counter.

Welch Allyn's iExaminer taps the smartphone's camera to photograph deep inside the eye -- the orange view of the retina filling the phone's screen.

Similarly, CellScope is developing an otoscope - that magnifier doctors use to peer into the ear - that can snap a photo of the eardrum. It's not for sale yet, but might parents one day email that kind of picture to the pediatrician before deciding whether Johnny needs an office visit?

And University of Washington researchers are testing a way to measure lung function in people with asthma or emphysema as they blow onto the phone and it captures the sound. Today, those measurements require blowing into special machines.

Insurers are studying what smartphone technology to pay for. For example, health care giant Kaiser Permanente is about to begin a project in Georgia to sell the iBGStar alongside other diabetes monitors in its on-site pharmacies. The project will determine whether patients like the smartphone monitor, if it improves care - and if so, whether the readings should beam into patients' electronic health records, in Georgia and in other Kaiser regions.

But ultimately these devices may have a bigger role in developing countries, where full-size medical equipment is in short supply but smartphones are becoming common. Even in rural parts of the US it can take hours to drive to a specialist, while a primary care physician might quickly email that specialist a photo of, say, a diseased retina first to see whether the trip's really necessary.

"These tools make diagnosis at a distance much easier," said Dr Nicholas Genes, an emergency medicine professor at New York's Mount Sinai School of Medicine, who helped with TEDMED's smartphone physical.

Over 1 billion devices will be connected to the internet this year. Each one of them will start churning out heaps of data. While the most common analytics are based on structured data, the real goldmine is in unstructured data that is 5 times larger and growing 3 times faster. Art Coviello, executive chairman of RSA, the security division of EMC, talks about how Big Data is addressing security challenges. Excerpts.

Hackers are getting increasingly sophisticated. How are security companies like yours gearing up to tackle newer challenges?
Historically, our security infrastructure has been able to act and react against known threats. In the last five years, IT infrastructure has changed dramatically with cloud, mobility, web applications and social media. We are preparing ourselves to respond to newer challenges in the threat landscape including the unknown. I don't mean to imply that we are headed to some security utopia .

How does intelligence-based security system detect attacks in an evolving threat landscape?
With cloud and mobility, there's no discernible perimeter . In an intelligence-driven security system, there's a thorough understanding of risk based on predictive analytics . The ability to analyse vast streams of data from numerous sources will result in intelligent information. For instance, if you look at our risk-based authentication at HDFC in India, it will not only identify you based on the device you log in from, but also by geography and IP address.

How is the CIO's office gearing up for an all-new security landscape?
One question I often ask is how chief information officers are spending their security budgets. And most of them don't know the split in terms of prevention, detection and response. In a perimeter system, about 70% of the pie is spent on prevention, 20% on detection and 10% on responding to attacks. The pie has to be better balanced in an intelligent-based security system.

How can India prevent repeated instances of financial frauds?
The Indian government should come up with prescriptive regulations around digital certificates and signatures. Such initiatives will secure Unique ID (UID) data. But the bigger challenge is to protect those biometric credentials without getting compromised .

Increase in cyberespionage recorded in 2012: Symantec

PUNE: Symantec's 'Internet Security Threat Report, Volume 18 (ISTR)' has said that there has been an increase in cyberespionage, with a global average number of targeted attacks per day in 2012 being 116, compared with 82 in 2011 and 77 in 2010, recording a 42% increase in targeted attacks.

The report said that targeted attacks such as Disttrack in 2012 are commonly used for the purposes of industrial espionage to gain access to the confidential information or intellectual property on a compromised computer system or network. Worldwide, the targets for attack in 2012 were knowledge workers who create the intellectual property that attackers want (27% of all targets in 2012) and those in sales (24% in 2012).

The presence of a large number of knowledge workers makes India, a potential target for attackers, with IT services featuring in the top list of industries targeted for spam, phishing and viruses. In fact, India was home to 16% of viruses and globally, it ranked second for virus prevalence, just behind the United States. India also ranked third for overall malicious code.

Meanwhile, Symantec's recent mobility surveys revealed that 68% Indians are addicted to their mobile devices and 72% of Indian businesses faced mobility incidents due to malware infections, spam incidents, exposures of information, breach of information due to lost/stolen devices and phishing/social engineering instances. "The focus on exploiting mobile devices will only grow with the increasing dependence on mobile devices for everything from simple email to critical apps and even mobile payments. In fact, Symantec predicts that 2013 will be a watershed year for mobile malware," the survey said.

In his weekly address to the nation, Obama said the "commonsense immigration reform bill" introduced in the Senate is a compromise, which means that nobody got everything they wanted - including him.

"But it's largely consistent with the principles I've laid out from the beginning," he said.

"It would continue to strengthen security at our borders and hold employers more accountable if they knowingly hire undocumented workers. It would provide a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million individuals who are already in this country illegally," Obama said.

"It would modernise our legal immigration system so that we're able to reunite families and attract the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers who will help create good paying jobs and grow our economy. These are all commonsense steps that the majority of Americans support. So there's no reason that immigration reform can't become a reality this year," he said in his weekly web and radio address to the nation.

Addressing the nation, in the midst of his ongoing trip to Mexico and Costa Rica, Obama said he is there because Latin America represents an incredible opportunity for the United States, especially when it comes to his top priority as President: creating good, middle-class jobs.

Microsoft promoting Windows Phone on Google Play

WASHINGTON: Microsoft has created an application named 'Switch to Windows Phone' on the Google Play Store available on all Android phones.

While the application is a convenient way for Android phone users to know about what the Windows operating system has to provide, Microsoft Windows phone does not provide for some of the Android and iPhone apps such as Instagram and Google Maps, the ABC News reports.

When installed, the application will report as to which all features of the Windows phone are equivalent to the Android market, while prompting the user to sign in with a Windows account to know more about the Windows phone.

The report further said that Microsoft has simultaneously launched an advertisement ridiculing the competitions between Apple and Samsung.

While Android users have rated the app down to 1.5 stars, the concept has been appealing to users looking forward to make a shift in their mobile operating systems.

Instagram unveils photo tagging feature

NEW YORK: Instagram has launched a new feature that allows users to add names to their photographs, just like Facebook.

Instagram announced the change on its blog on Thursday, writing, "photos are memories of the people, places and moments that mean the most to us." The company posted that they have always sought to give users simple and expressive ways to bring their stories behind their images to life.

The tech firm said that users captions and hashtags capture the "what?" and their Photo Map answers the "where?" but until now they were never quite able to answer the "who?"

The new feature also includes a new "Photos of You" section, the New York Daily News reported. The feature is available for Instagrammers to check out, but won't be visible to everyone else until May 16.

As with Facebook, Instagram users can also change settings so that they have to approve an image before it's tagged. Facebook bought Instagram for 1 billion dollars last year.

Samsung launches iPad mini rival @ Rs 30,900

NEW DELHI: Aiming to increase its presence in the Indian tablet market, South Korean consumer electronics major Samsung today launched a tablet with 8-inch TFT screen, Galaxy Note 510, in India.

The 3G-enabled tablet is powered by Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS and runs on 1.6GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM, Samsung Electronics said in a release. Galaxy Note 510, priced at Rs 30,900, has 16GB internal memory that can be expanded up to 64 GB through a microSD card, it added.

Connectovoty features in the new tablet are 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and infrared; it can be used to make phone calls and send text messages over GSM network. A 5MP autofocus camera is placed on the back of this tablet, whereas a 1.3MP unit is used on the front panel. According to the company, the 4,600mAh battery of this tablet offers talk time of nine hours.

This tablet takes on the likes of Apple iPad mini and Google Nexus 7 in the Indian market.

"Galaxy Note 510 breathes fresh life into the category as it delivers the perfect fusion of portability and everyday productivity resulting in a pioneering, pocket-sized solution that enhances and enriches our everyday lives," Samsung Electronics president and CEO (South West Asia) BD Park said.

This new tablet offers innovative solutions like the 'multi-window', which splits the portable screen and allows optimal access to a number of live applications, the release said.

Samsung has also launched an offer with the tablet, in which it assures the owner who sends an SMS to the firm gets 12,000 coins in the virtual wallet. These coins get activated as soon as one downloads the myServices application and can be redeemed by streaming premium movie, downloading bollywood songs, playing game and come with a validity period of 3 months from the date of purchase.

Sony Xperia L now available in India at Rs 18,990

NEW DELHI: Sony Xperia L, which was unveiled in India last month alongside Xperia SP, is now up for pre-orders in the country. Online retailer Snapdeal is offering the smartphone at Rs 18,990 in black and white colours, but says that deliveries will start in the next seven business days. On the other hand, e-commerce website Infibeam is taking pre-orders for the device and claims that the phone will be released on May 08, 2012. Sony has not listed the new Xperia L on its website till now.

The all-new Sony Xperia L touts a 4.3-inch TFT touchscreen with 854x480p resolution and 228ppi pixel density. The smartphone runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system and packs a 1GHz dual-core Krait CPU under the hood. LG to stop LCD production, focus on LEDs

KOLKATA: LG Electronics India said it would phase out production of LCDs in the next few months and would instead focus on LEDs and other flat panel products.

"The company will focus on LEDs and ultra HD LED TVs. The production of LCDs will be stopped in India as the demand has declined sharply," LG Electronics India marketing head (home entertainment) Rishi Tandan said here today.

He was in the city to launch a new line of LED-based flat panel products tailored for India.

"We have also lined up new audio products to revive this line of business with a target to double the sales this year," Tandan said.

Television forms major business of home entertainment division and this division contributes about 38 per cent of the Rs 16,000 crore turnover in 2012," Tandan said.

In 2012, the company had nine LCD models and all new products in flat products that are launched are LED based, he said.

"The company plans to roll out 45 new models in flat panels of which 15 models are from India-specific products," Tandan said.

The launch of the company's new LED product range in the country aligned to its India-specific strategy is aimed at a sale of Rs 5,000 crore, a growth of 70 per cent over last year's LED sales, he added.

LG is also planning to introduce OLED TVs, widely considered to be the next step in the evolution of TVs, which are thinner, lighter and brighter.

Asked about the CRT television business, LG regional manager (east) Ranjit Kumar said the company did not want to lose out in this market and would continue as the long market demand persists.

"Though demand for flat products is growing in this part of the country (east), it has considerable demand for CRT television too and so we continue to sell CRTs," he said.

BlackBerry India appoints Sunil Lalvani as MD

BANGALORE: Struggling smartphone-maker BlackBerry has appointed Sunil Lalvani as the new managing director for India.

Lalvani, who used to head BlackBerry's enterprise business in the country, will replace Sunil Dutt, who left the company in March.

The top-management overhaul comes just months after Canada based BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion, unveiled it's latest touch-based smartphone - BlackBerry Z10.

Once the most popular device among corporates, BlackBerry has been losing market share to rival mobile phone vendors such as Samsung and Nokia over the past two years. Its market share in India fell from about 15% in 2011 to less than 8% in 2012, according to analyst estimates.

Lalvani's appointment is latest in a series of top-management changes at the beleaguered phone maker. In 2011, Dutt took over after BlackBerry's managing director Frenny Bawa stepped down from her position. Over the past two months, Rick Costanzo, the company's executive vice-president for global sales, was leading the team in India.

In an email statement, Lalvani said the company's focus will be on driving the latest mobile solutions to consumers and enterprises in India. He has about 20 years of industry experience and has worked at companies such as Nokia and Cisco.

'Google Glasses pose privacy threat to users'

LONDON: Google Glass poses security threats as the wearable computer developed by the search giant does not have any PIN or authentication system, hackers have revealed.

Hackers may be able to exploit Google Glass' 'root capability', which is enabled by attaching it to a desktop computer and running some commands, allowing them to access the user's information, the Guardian reports.

The report said that hackers will also be able to monitor Google Glass' users' activities on their smartphones as a Santa Barbara-based programmer, specializing in cracking smartphone security for both iPhone and Android devices, Jay Freeman has discovered.

Freeman said that once hackers are able to access the root on the Glass, then they are likely to have access to the user's phone and computer as well as a camera or microphone and can see or hear everything the use is looking at or listening to.

According to the report, Google Glass' hackers are also capable of knowing computer and Smartphone passwords, door codes and even writings on a piece of paper.

Freeman also recommended that Glass should have a protection system that functions when it is taken off by the owner, such as a biometric which either uses patterns in the iris or voice or a PIN, adding that a plastic shield that could slide over the camera would mean that the user is not recording anything, thereby serving the privacy concerns.

While Freeman warned that a hacker would only need 10 minutes to install a "rooted" version of the software that Glass uses as Google Glass, unlike Android phones does not have any kind of PIN mechanism, which renders it usable once the users switch it on, Google spokesperson insists that the company gives priority to device-specific protections and solution experimenting that make the Glass widely available, the report added.

Facebook, banks seek dismissal of IPO lawsuit

Facebook, its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and dozens of banks asked a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit accusing the social media company of misleading investors about its financial condition before its $16 billion initial public offering a year ago.

The defendants said in court papers that before the IPO last May 18, Facebook had no obligation to publicly disclose internal projections on how increased mobile usage and product decisions might affect future revenue, even if it had provided the projections to its underwriters' analysts.

They said the US Securities and Exchange Commission has "consistently" refused to require issuers to publicly disclose all "material non-public information" that they share with analysts before an IPO, because of its potential negative impact on a company's ability to raise money.

"Plaintiffs would have this court impose - retroactively - a rule which the SEC has for decades thoughtfully rejected," the defendants said in papers filed in US District Court in Manhattan. "This court should decline the invitation."

Among the defendants is Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter of the IPO.

"There is no reasonable basis for dismissal," Max Berger, a partner at Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann representing pension fund and other investors that are collectively the lead plaintiffs, said in an email. "We will oppose the motion in due course."

The case before US District Judge Robert Sweet consolidates 31 lawsuits over Facebook's IPO.

Sweet also oversees separate investor litigation against Nasdaq OMX Group over allegations that orders to buy and sell Facebook shares were executed improperly on the first day of trading.

Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, went public at $38 per share. Its share price rose as high as $45 on the first day, but quickly fell and remain below their offering price.

In Wednesday morning trading, Facebook shares were down 31 cents, or 1.1 percent, at $27.45 on the Nasdaq. Facebook is scheduled to report quarterly results after US markets close on Wednesday.

Intel names insider Brian Krzanich as CEO

NEW YORK: Intel said that its board had elected its chief operating officer Brian Krzanich as the chipmaker's next chief executive, replacing Paul Otellini.

Intel shares fell slightly in early trade after the news.

Krzanich, who has worked at Intel since 1982, will take on the top job at the company's annual shareholder meeting on May 16. Krzanich, 52, has been COO since January 2012. The board also elected Renee James, 48, to be president of Intel and is expected to expand to 10 members to add Krzanich.

Intel set Krzanich's 2013 compensation package at $10 million including base pay of $1 million, an annual incentive cash target of $2.5 million and equity awards for 2013 with a grant date fair value of $6.5 million.

Intel announced in November that it was looking for a new CEO as Otellini announced plans to retire.

Intel shares fell to $23.68 in early trade after closing at $23.99 on Nasdaq.

Breakability test: Galaxy S4 gets ‘worst’ rating

NEW DELHI: South Korean giant Samsung's latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S4 scores high on new features front. The device boasts of several new features vis-a-vis its rival smartphones.

However, according to SquareTrade, an American firm that tests gadgets specifically on breakability, Samsung Galaxy S4 doesn't score very high on durability front. It is, in fact, highly prone to breaking as compared to rivals, if SquareTrade is to be believed. San Francisco and London-based SquareTrade offers highly-rated protection plans to millions of American gadgets and consumer electronics buyers against accidental damage and malfunctioning etc. It is credited with transforming of the warranty industry.

In this test, Samsung Galaxy S4's breakability was tested against that of Apple iPhone 5 and Galaxy SIII. The all-new Galaxy S4 delivered the worst results among the three due to slippery back panel, and a wider screen that reduces grip-ability, as well as in the drop tests. On the other hand, it did a little better in terms of water resistance than Galaxy SIII and scored a total of 7 points on the index.

The company assesses elements like front and back panel design, edge construction and materials, size, weight, friction quotient, water resistance and grip-ability of a device while assigning a Breakability Score between one and 10. The higher a gadget scores on the scale, the higher the risk of it breaking due to an accident.

Apple iPhone 5 secured the highest points out of the three phones due to features like excellent grip-ability and low friction coefficient. Samsung Galaxy SIII proved to be more durable than its successor due to its plastic back and lower grip-ability owing to its wide width. While iPhone 5 notched a score of 5 on the index, Galaxy SIII secured 6.5.

Google gives Glass to developers, apps coming soon

NEW DELHI: Google has given Glass, its highly-anticipated gadget, to developers to work on creating more applications for the platform, a top company official said today. The California-headquartered firm, however, did not give any particular date for the Indian or global launch of Google Glass -- a wearable computer with a head-mounted display.

"We are giving away a few for the developers... the idea is for them to develop using the Google Glass platform so we can find out what interesting applications can be added in addition to what we already have," Google SVP and chief business officer Nikesh Arora told reporters here when asked about the time of launch of the gadget.

"It is already being rolled out. There are people who had signed up to buy it. We had asked people to give us a description of why it makes sense for them to have Google Glass. We have lots of people respond to that and we have chosen a subset of those people and the plan is to let them have it, let them generate applications for it," he added.

In February this year, Google launched a contest where it asked participants to submit an application, 'IfIHadGlass', explaining what they would do with Google Glass technology.

On being prodded about the launch of the device in India, he added, "It has not been launched to consumers anywhere in the world. It has been given to select developers." About the initial responses from developers about the product, he said it was too "early to talk on the feedback." On target consumers, he said: First idea is to have applications that people find interesting."

While addressing a roundtable on advertising market and it future prospects, Arora said digital advertising will take time to catch up in India. As per a joint report by Internet and Mobile Association of India and IMRB International, online advertising market has grown by 29% year-on-year to Rs 2,260 crore by March, 2013 and is expected to reach Rs 2,938 crore by March 2014. It includes search, display, mobile, social media, email and video advertising.

The report said online advertising market on an average is expected to grow by 40% annually in four years. According to industry estimates, digital advertising forms 7-10% of the total advertising market in India.
